Standifer back on the market

Submitted by 7NK7 on
Saw it on twitter via Alan Trieu. Anyone know what's up with him being called a "former" commit??

I feel bad for a kid if it is in fact grades that keeps him from going to a school he wants to go to. I wish him well and obviously hope that he succeeds elsewhere(as long as it's not against Michigan!)

I thought we were over doing it with bringing in 6 total DBs if Wright were to commit. If we still get him we are still set numbers wise at DB, and could potentially save a scholly for next year or add another bigtime prospect this year.

<br>Plus, a knock on standifer was that he didn't have great speed. After seeing what happened to Cullen Christian, I don't like the idea of recruiting corners that don't have elite speed. And that's my 2 cents.

Good luck kid. It's better for both he looks elsewhere. That way he is going to a school where  he is going to qualify. Nothing worse than finding out a recruit didn't make it before summer camp starts.

ANY athlete who passes NCAA clearinghouse that a coach really wants will get into Michigan.

It may simply be that he's close enough to not passing clearinghouse and not being eligible for any DI school, and that the coaches aren't willing to risk holding the spot.

Another possibility is that Hoke has a different approach and wants kids who are academically succeeding well about NCAA clearinghouse levels, but the admissions office will not prevent a student from attending who has no crime record and who has passed clearinghouse without a bunch of fishy online classes.

The difference between UM and Alabama when it comes to admissions is that UM might take 5-10 football players who are near clearinghouse minimums (or at least, nowhere near standard, non-athlete admits), while Alabama would be willing to take 28 (though they do attract some kids who do decently in the classroom as well).

This is an unfortunate turn of events.  I wish him the best of luck wherever he ends up.  The good thing is that we have great options to fill his spot.

Sucks for the kid if it was b/c of grades, but good for the class. This means we can take Wright/Reeves, an OL, another WR, a TE, and still have room for Dunn if he wants in. All needs: satisfied.

It says he doesn't have an offer from us anymore.  I really hope it is grades and us not doing anything.  I don't want to play Ohio's games just because they have a new master in town.

Best of luck to him.  Hopes he gets his grades up and finds another school where he can thrive on and off the field.  I'm glad that Hoke & Co are being careful with everything so we don't have Demar Dorsey part II

Standifer has been a real roller coaster.  He committed right about the time we were just learning that this coaching staff was going to be recruiting at a high level, and he brought an offer list that was not particularly impressive.  I wasn't sure why a mostly under-the-radar middling three star when everyone seemed to want to go blue.  But then he started making plays in his senior year, got offered by Notre Dame, and made me start thinking we got in early on a 6'1" sleeper corner.

So I have grown a bit excited to see what he can bring to the team (even if his speed limits him as a corner, he is a 6'1 ballhawk who gets praised for his run support).  In addition to that Michigan's top DB targets seem like icing-on-the-cake types who either seem to good to be true or are committed to another team already, and Standifer is my "oh well" fall back if those two don't work out.

And now he's "back on the market".

Let's call it what it is. More than likely it's a mutually beneficial parting of ways. Michigan gets Wright or Reeves; Anthony goes to a program where he'll be higher in the pecking order.

Look, I am sick and tired of hearing how hypocritical U of M coaches are in regards to commits and those recruits who are commited and taking visits. Hoke and his staff have clearly stated that if you commit and decide to take visits you are NOT considered a commit. This same principle applies to Michigan recruits as well as those that commit to other schools(my interpretation). Thus, if an individual commits to another school and wishes to visit Michigan, then they are not truly commited. I agree with this. You need to deal with it and knock off the theory that we are hipocrites. ENOUGH ALREADY. They have stated their position and it is consistent !!!!

Chill dude. The criticism isn't about Reeves visting and Hoke poaching recruits, but that Standifer would suddenly have "grade issues" when there hasn't been any mention of them before, we have few spots remaining, and two of our higher rated prospects are visting. It hasn't been said anywhere that Standifer took visits but has grade issues, so it kind of raises questions (that probably won't get answered). The hope is that Hoke isn't demanding committment but not returning it.

Something tells me word of that would get around pretty quickly if the coaches were pulling something like that. You'd also think Standifer would be pretty quick to defend himself. If there's smoke there's usually fire. It's too bad too as I was really excited about him being in the class. Best of luck to him.

Ya, exactly. That type of thing isn't viewed to highly by other high school coaches. There is significant evidence indicating that there was no foul play here: Treadwell doesn't seem to be harboring any ill-will (one could reasonably foresee that his coach wouldn't be so high on Michigan if it just dropped another one of his kids), as someone mentioned above there probably was going to be another spot for Wright anyways, and Hoke has shown hesitancy to recruit talented guys that are academically questionable (Pittman and Burbridge). I'm probably reading too much into it, but it is just kind of a bummer to see a kid go after you get excited about seeing him suit up for the Maize and Blue. Hopefully he can sort his grades out and land somewhere that can set him up to succeed.

Here is an idea that hasn't been thrown out too much.. If we don't have enough elite guys why don't we just not fill all 28 slots and possible let a deserving guy like T. Robinson keep his scholly or slap one onto N. Brink?  He very well may be the starting SDE next year.

Has he committed somewhere else? He was one that was about a commit but for whatever the reason, he didnt. Rumors were that the coaches told him no or something like that.

I think Standifer's going to be a good college football player.  Unfortunately, it won't be for Michigan.  It's slightly disappointing because I would like Michigan to have a big corner to match up against some of the Big Ten's good-sized wide receivers.  Maybe Yuri Wright can fill that role if he commits.

I really think that kid would have fit in Michigan and B1G real well. He was in my top 5 on the guys we have committed now.

Please don't take this as bashing Hoke, I'm not.... I love the guy and think he will have a healthy run here in Michigan.

I have two friends who I play minor league football with that played college ball at Indiana State (They were 1 year a part) that had full rides to Ball State. Right before signing day Hoke pulled their Schollys for a potentially better player. Needless to say they are not big Hoke fans, so I get bashed a lot. I'm a Michigan fan above everything... we could have Urban Myer and I would still bleed blue.

Is this a common practice with coaches on recruiting players? Is it ethical to pull schollys because you feel player B is better than A?

Oh both players are extremely smart and graduated and one is currently in Grad school, so it probably wasn't a grade issue.

The thing I don't get is why people assume that the mutual parting of the ways is due to his grades.  With respect to this kid, these assumptions should not be made.  Unless someone has confirmation from him, or the coaches, it is unfair to assume this.

The kid may have excellent grades and had a change of heart and wanted to look around and because of Hoke's policy on commits, they had to part ways.  Maybe instead of sneaking off to Oregon or some other school for a visit, he was upfront with the coaches about wanting to take more visits and this caused the mutual split.

My point is, we should assume its grades, and everyone making those assumptions are wrong for doing so.
