Snowflake: It is time to unequivocal support for Sherrone Moore

Submitted by Toby Flenderson on November 17th, 2023 at 8:51 AM

Listen, the outcome is not what we hoped for. We all wanted JH to be on the sideline for the next two games. I understand many of us are disappointed, with having more questions than answers to what’s going on.

I do want to ensure that our distaste for this outcome equates to us all in the Michigan community getting behind Sherrone. This is the first Black Michigan coach for the game. This is a man who has been with the program through the lows (2020) and the highs, and has likely turned down many opportunities to stay at Michigan. This is a man who will likely be the next Michigan coach if JH steps down.

I got Sherrone’s back. I understand many coaches of color get higher levels of scrutiny. We saw many talking heads mocking this man for showing emotion. Sherrone is our coach, and he’s one of us.

Give ‘em hell Sherrone. You got this.

I know you're being sarcastic, but serious question, did anyone say anything about Kirk Ferentz tearing up during his post game interview?  His team has gone through a lot regarding injuries and what not, but all teams seem to do that to a certain extent.  He sure as hell hasn't had to go through what Sherrone Moore and team has from the standpoint of getting the new your head coach cannot be on the sideline, literally hours before the biggest game of the season thus far, and then prevailing!!!

My buddy’s son played for Moore at CMU and then he walked on at Iowa. He is a high academic kid.

He said Moore is one of the smarter coaches he has ever been around and his favorite coach he has ever played for.

Moore connects with the kids and has natural leadership skills. Maybe a little different style than Harbaugh yet remarkably the same.

Ah yes.  The most controversial of takes: please support the coach that has to step up for the most important game of the season in one of the biggest seasons in recent UM history during a very turbulent time.

Did I type in Yiddish? Where did I say the take was controversial?

I am excited to see Michigan have their first Black HC coaching in The Game. However, I also recognize Black coaches are often heavily scrutinized, and unfairly. He has been put in a tough position, and I hope the Michigan faithful continues to stand behind him, which I think we all will.

I'm excited about the prospect of a Coach Moore, Toby, and think you may have a point about Moore getting abused for showing emotion when other coaches draw praise for it.

Given that there are only 15 Black coaches in a sport where Black players predominate, I think it's probably okay to say we embrace Moore's rise and success, especially at a school that has long been seen as a champion of civil rights--with a head coach who makes it his quiet mission to place talented Black men in positions of authority.

Stay the course--football's a sport where a lot of reactionary sentiment prevails; it's one reason I've always appreciated the Seths and Brians of this world. They don't always wear it on their sleeves, but you're allowed to. The fact that it has to require bravery even now. . . is what it is. Make the tools uncomfortable!

Is this even a question?  Of course we'll support and cheer for Coach Moore!  Toby, if somehow you had been named the coach, I would have supported and cheered for you.  Go Sherrone, Go Blue, I love turtle soup!

right. people need to get out of their feelings right now. this changes nothing. We will still have harbaugh during the week and Sherrone has already proven he can win a big game. They need us now more than ever.

100% support. The offense has been humming this year, disciplined and methodical. He can definitely win these two games.

As for UM’s caving, there is likely evidence that Stallions did not hermetically seal his exploits from others on staff. Someone else knew about it. This will likely not be a Rogue One scenario. So, settling the case now with the BigTen protects the rest of this season, and the players’ efforts, from any further penalty. This is also kind of a token suspension with Jim able to coach for the other six days. The NCAA will not finish its investigation and take action this year. Settling the case brings certainty to the situation and allows UM to focus down the home stretch.

I believe in Moore, I believe in this staff and I believe in these players !

I think it's Absolutely disgusting how the talking heads mocked Moore. Regardless of how we got in this situation, Moore was put into a tough situation! Harbaugh giving Moore the trust to lead the team on the road against a top 10 team. A program under attack, His kids ( team ) doubted about their accomplishments and they proved the outsiders wrong.

Did any media people mock Dan Campbell when he cried about his teams effort but falling  short? ( 2 years ago vs Minnesota )

You know what else I find sickening ? Tons of boneheads said NIL will ruin these kids drive. They won't take the sport or Rivalries seriously.. They got their money why would they care? First thing those same boneheads do when a guy like Caleb Williams cries after losing, Bash the kid..

Thank you for this post. All these years and supporting the Coach standing on the sideline never occurred to me. You are truly a hero of the people.

Thanks for posting this very special and important thread.  I was considering not giving my full support to Coach Moore, but your persuasive arguments have convinced me.

While everyone, including my, initial reaction is one of disgust... it really depends on what happens in the next 10 days.  The ante for the game has just been upped, significantly - for both sides.

Moore has only been a sole OC for one year.  However beloved he is taking on the responsibilities of HC at Michigan is an immense difficult task.

Marcus Freeman is having his struggles as he finds his feet. I don’t think Michigan should follow suit precisely because they aren’t in a position for a new HC to need time to acclimate to his position.

The 2024 schedule as currently constituted is absolutely brutal. Setting up Moore for failure if he takes over with the roster turnover and that schedule.

Glad Sherrone has one more week to get his feet wet against what should be an overmatched opponent, but next week is the real deal. Thankfully he’s already proved he can beat a top-10 opponent, and do it on the road, so he’s got to have some confidence under his belt.

But next week…..next week is on another level. It’s the real deal. It could define his legacy (unfairly maybe, but it still would), and he’s the head man in perhaps the biggest Michigan-OSU game EVER.

Thankfully Michigan will be at home and Sherrone will have the home crowd at his back, but his legacy will likely be defined within three hours next Saturday afternoon. I hope he’s up to the challenge.

That said, if Michigan wins next week, there is a very real chance Ryan Day is fired. OSU would have no more excuses to hide behind, and he would’ve lost to an interim coach. That has to be a fireable offense at OSU.

Get out of here with the “…coaches of color get higher levels of scrutiny.” Bullshit. Just think back to 2020, when much of the fan base wanted white coach Jim Harbaugh fired, despite the fact he’d gone 49-22 to that point. All college football coaches are highly scrutinized. It comes with the job.

Seems like a great dude. I support him as an interim coach for sure - though I think they should have chosen someone like Hart or similar so that Moore could focus on running the offense/OL during these 3 make-or-break games to end the season.

That said, I look forward to watching the Maryland game, and missing the OSU game - since they have won both of these past two years when i couldn’t watch.

Campbell needs to pound JJ on the shoulder pads so he is ready unless he already did that last game as well.

I am quite sure Sherrone et al know the rage and support the vast network represents.

Black coaches may get more scrutiny in the media, I have no idea. As a fan I can safely say that if Mel Tucker had found another Kenneth Walker in 2022 or 2023 and had another big season I would not have cared less if he was white, black, or a Martian. I would have just enjoyed the success. And in the same vein, with all his failures on and off the field after Walker left, never once did I believe that his race had anything to with any of it. He was simply not a very good coach and apparently also not great at making decisions off the field.

Aside from that, I would be beyond perplexed if anyone in the fanbase DID NOT have unequivocal support for Moore. It's not like he pulled a coup and usurped Harbaugh's job.
