SIAP: Possible QB Grad Student Transfer

Submitted by umbig11 on

The Iowa Rivals board has started a thread about Jake Rudock transferring and one of the possible destinations is to Michigan. Chris Balas from The Wolverine heard it from the Iowa mod Tom Kakert a couple of days ago. Balas does not believe it will happen, but who knows? Rudock played at St Thomas Aquinas, same as John O'Korn our Houston transfer. So, there is that odd connection as well. Rudock's stats are better than Devin Gardner's.

Jake was 231-345, 61%, 5 picks, 16 TD's, 203 Yds/ppg (12), 2436 Tot yds and an eff rating of 133.5

Devin was 174-283, 61%, 15 picks, 10 TD's, 167 Yds/ppg (12), 1896 Tot yds, and an eff rating of 118.8

From what I saw of Iowa they were pretty conservative. Would Rudock be a good fit under Jim Harbaugh? Would he be an upgrade from what we have coming back?

All speculation at this point, but it is circulating.

I hate saying so because it starts the speculation (PLEASE SPECULATE PRIVATELY AND DON'T PUT NAMES ON THE BOARD), but there are two more likely transfers we know of (things can always change of course), and a few more hanging on to see where they stand after spring practice.

I think there's at least one or two spots available before we start asking guys like Kerridge to not get a scholarship this year.

Yep.

Doesnt take a rocket scientist to look over the roster and see there are some guys in their 4th year in the program who have not taken a meaningful snap in Big 10 play in their entire career.  I am actually surprised those were not guys we heard about during the 5th year senior week.  Can't assume anything but after spring practice if those cadre of guys are not seeing themselves moving up depth charts and if they do indeed really want to play football the writing would be on the wall.

And to OSU guy higher on page - our >85 includes assumptions of 3 walk on scholarships.

I don't think this will happen. However, I do think if JH comes out of Spring practice not feeling confident with the guys he has, it's possible he could look to add more pieces (*transfers). Some have speculated that the earlier Spring events have been planned to allow time to tinker with this. I don't know the timelines/deadlines of adding transfers, but I wouldn't be suprised if Harbaugh looked into other options if no QBs seperated themselves in the Spring practices.

All speculation and I think spring practice will tell the tale. I think Grad students can apply during the summer if I am not mistaken. Isn't that what Lyons is doing too?

Anyway, if JH needed a QB, Rudock would at least have shown that he is B1G battle tested and productive. Not a Superstar, but stable and efficient.

Grad transfers would happen post May or whenever that school finished their semester.

I have been surprised no one has connected Golson with UM.  Malik Zaire seems to be the heir there and Golson on his way out - he is the dual threat guy (not a Vick type runner but mobile) than Jim likes.  He just has to figure out his turnover issues.  But he'd be a massive upgrade over what we have seen so far (which is anywhere from little to nothing) from the current guys.

no doubt, the staff 100% scheduled spring early in order to evaluate asap.  not just QBs, they need roster-wide evals and the sooner they do, the sooner the staff can reconvene to shake out offseason goals / priorities.

theyll do the most basic of installs this spring while coaches push their buttons to see what theyre working with.  finishing early gives the players an extra month or more to condition and rep together to meet offseason goals before fall camp.

makes total sense to hammer out their spring 20 asap this first year but id be shocked if they ever repeat this schedule

I disagree, we have virtually no idea what we have aside from Morris. I still think Harbaugh can probably develop a decent quarterback from one of Morris, Speight, Malzone and Gentry for this year but if there turns out to be room, I'm fine with grabbing one more option there, since that is our greatest position of need.

I'm not sold that Morris can be turned around. Hope it happens for him,  but the decision-making was just terrible and accuracy is a consistent problem. Accuracy in fact has been a problem for him since high school... I don't know if I see that changing. My money is on Speight or Malzone right now.

But if anyone can do it, it's Harbaugh. He can tweak his schemes to work to a QB's skill set probably better than about anyone in college (besides possibly Meyer). And I hope it does pan out... always was a Morris fan as far as how he helped to gather recruits together, and it'd be great to have him finish his last two years at Michigan as a winner and leader.

that the accuracy is a huge problem, but I think a more experienced O Line will help out quite a bit with his decision making.  The few times he did play it seemed like he had almost no time to think or make adjustments.  Some of that is on him, but if you're playing behind a swiss cheese O Line that has to make you nervous.  I think we saw the same thing with Gardner this year.

The main reason I have hope is that JH is known for simplifying things for his QB's.  Hopefully it works out, but if not I think we have enough QB talent on the roster now.

Well, it would be nice to have an upperclassman with plenty of game experience at quarterback. I don't think that any of us are sold on Morris (He may turn out to be great, but at this point he has proven nothing).

Sure, Jake Rudock may not be an elite quarterback, but as Brian posted in This Weeks Obsession, all Harbaugh needs is a game manager. Rudock may be just that. Not to mention, I beleive he is probably an upgrade to any quartback we currently have on the roster.

Iowa's offense was very conservative but Rudock greatly contributed to Ferentz's lack of confidence with the offense. If this is true, Iowa fans would be ecstatic! This fact alone should give a MIchigan fan pause. I've seen him in person-meh Have Harbaugh work his magic on someone else

Can't worry about hurt feelings.  If there's room, bring him in and let the youngsters learn for another year.

The thought of spending a whole season listening to Beth Mowins say "Jake Rudock" has me giddy. That's far and away my favorite Beth Mowins name. I get into Beth Mowins imitation-mode by saying "Jake Rudock" multiple times. Oh please let this happen.

Why would you compare him (or anyone for that matter) to Devin's year?  I have a garbage can who had better stats than Gardner did in 2014.
