Shouldn't we focus more on Columbus than on Ohio?

Submitted by Wolverine90 on

I see shirts saying "Ohio - Worst state ever" and constant general Ohio bang ups on this site.  I don't get it.  Grbac, Woodson, Howard, etc., etc., so many great UM players have come to us from Ohio, and they had, and probably still have, families living in Ohio.  Ohio is a major recruiting ground for UM.  Yet we constantly bang up Ohio instead of focusing on Columbus and OSU.

If  a hypothetical recruit living in State A is being recruited by the team from State B and many State B fans keep banging up my home state, i.e., my home and my family's home, I'd be less incentivized to go to State B.

Like the graphic in my sig, I prefer to bang up that rat's nest that is Columbus, relative to the beauty of Ann Arbor, and to take it easy on Ohio.  But am I alone in thinking the way UM fans crush Ohio in general doesn't do UM any favors on the Ohio recruiting trail?

Only at the University of Michigan would someone look to limit the collateral damage of intercollegiate hate.  I imagine posters on Ohio State and Michigan State blogs, for example, are devising ways to expand the hate, not protract it.  Good times.

I would agree with you if it were true that people in Ohio had another school to root for in major college athletics.  Truth is, everyone in this state is a Buckeye fan with the occasional scattered Michigan fan, such as myself.  Ohio is pretty shitty, and it just got worse now that I moved to Columbus and live less than 2 miles from the Shoe.

You are putting way too much thought into this.

Even a horrible state can have its redeeming aspects.  Still, Ohio is unquestionably the worst state ever because it has the highest concentration of Buckeyes.

Because Columbus != Cleveland != Cincinnati != Toledo, the OP's idea is interesting ... except for the fact that any Ohio bashing is clearly interpreted as OSU bashing by probably 99% of the population.

Be nice to Toledo!  It isn't their fault that they are a part of Ohio; they were apart of Michigan until we were forced to trade them to Ohio for the rest of the UP, because of the sleazy maneuvering of Ohio in Congress.  the same bunch that delayed our entry into the union as a state by a few years/decades.

the burning poop from the MIll Creek Wastewater treatment plant along I-75 just north of the Ohio River, which is not apart of Ohio but Kentucky -- go figure.

There last national champ team was helmed by a guy from Utica MI. Also when you get a ticket anywhere in that state for having MI plates...Let the hate flow through you.

Your repeated use of the phrase "bang up" is funny. It reminds me of when the characters in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia inexplicably make up random sayings and use them repeatedly (e.g., "get hard," "jam you up").

Also, I thought "bang up" was an adjective meaning "good," like "bang up job, ol' chap!"

...What every Wolverine fan said was a lie, but unfortunately Ohio is litteraly the oozing staph infection on the crotch of American siocety....Anyways, I'm sure recruits don't really pay any mind to the taunts we throw @ Ohio. They realize we're referring to TSIO

Ohio is just awful.

1. We (or at least Hoke) refer to that school as Ohio. Therefore, Ohio sucks.

2. Have you ever driven from Michigan to Florida, Atlanta, or any other southern state? That drive through Ohio is awful. There's nothing there. it's awful, and therefore, Ohio sucks.

3. They have a song about not giving a damn about the whole state of michigan, and we can have a bunch of shirts about Ohio sucking.

4. It doesn't seem to have hurt us with any recruits, as many of our best players (like the ones you listed) chose to come here despite the existence of those shirts.

Ohio sucks.

The drive is terrible.  The only thing that could make it worse is if the "Shingle Shack" Truck Stop, whose "signature dish" was listed as "SOS,"  was still there.

As it is always cited: the genesis of the rivalry is the fact Michigan went to war (read skirmish) with the state of Ohio. Not just Columbus.

If you want to be historically and geographically accurate with your hate, you should hate Toledo.

I think it's a borderline fact that Ohio doesn't have much going for it. Sure Michigan's economy is terrible and some areas of Detroit looks post-apocalyptic, but we have beautiful lakes, sand dunes, the UP, etc... Almost every other state has some redeeming factor to negate the terrible aspects about it- except Ohio. I lived in Ohio for a handful of years. The people are nice, some cities are okay, Cinncinatti is cool. But man, there's not much more there other than an killer amusement park, a dirty lake and a river.

be slowing our recruiting of Ohio players this year.  I hate the whole state of Ohio, my mom moved to Columbus 10 years ago and it literally took me 5 years to visit her, because i hate that place so much.  I walked into her church on Sunday and even the Pastor was all over me for my Michigan love.  And whenever me and my wife go on vacations without the kids we fly out of Columbus, so my mom can watch them.  Well last time i had on a Michigan jacket.  And they took me to the side and searched me.  The whole time making cracks at me wearing a Michigan jacket in their ugly little airport.  And i just was down there for mothers day and my 9yr old who is a huge M fan, wore his Michael Hart jersey and went outside to play with some of the kids in the neighborhood.  Let's just say they didn't take to kindly to that.  But it was the proudest day of my life!!!

I am from Youngstown, the anus of the buckeye state. We here hate ourselves exponentially more than anyone could possibly hate anyone else.

Any recruit with tremendous state pride is going to OSU anyway. That state has been deeply indoctrinated in Buckeye propaganda. Michigan is only getting the rebels, as always. And the more we beat them, the cooler it will be to call yourself a rebel.

Pretty simple.
