I thought he looked pretty good considering all the pressure.  Not sure how that wasn't a targeting against McKeon.  Textbook.

I was calling that targeting out watching it live. Of course, NBC conveniently did not show the replay even though there was more than ample time to show it.  That was a recurrent theme - any questionable call that went Notre Dame’s way never got replayed. I was astonished by the lack of integrity and cannot remember seeing a football broadcast that was so manipulative. Doug Flutie was also remarkably disingenuous.

As far as Mineral King,  that kid can flat out play quarterback like a champ. I am so excited to watch him this season.

"I seem to remember 3 distinct and blatant defensive pass interferences that should've been called against ND that would've given first downs and I'm pretty sure one was in the endzone."

We did get hosed on some non-calls, and the spotting of the ball wasn't particularly balanced (Brando and Dierdorf noticed this as well).  I'm not blaming the loss solely on this; we screwed up defensively, and that did more than anything else to seal our fate.  But the officials sure seemed to be lopsided on their judgment at times.

"But the officials sure seemed to be lopsided on their judgment at times."

This was the least surprising thing possible about this game. Some old farts who've been watching us get hosed by the zebras down in South Bend many times over the past 40 years mentioned this as a reason to be a bit cautious about predicting certain victory, but history is a meaningless illusion I guess.

This game was a categorical failure on the part of the Offensive Line. Couldn't pick up a stunt, couldn't protect the edge, couldn't stop the DTs from compressing the pocket. Like, "Ole Miss vs. Bama last year" levels of bad.

It's embarrassing, really.

Patterson played really well given the circumstances.

They couldn't handle a 5 man rush. The play before the long sack (where the ball flew way up in the air) saw Bushell-Beatty just straight up ignore a player on his outside to help on the inside.

Just on a quick count, Patterson saw pressure <3 seconds after the snap on ~2/3rds of the plays. That's terrible, and there's no excuse for it.

Because I have nothing better to do, I spent some time on this play.

ND was showing a potential 6-man blitz. 2 lbs were both showing blitz. The line call shifted protection to the left. The LB on the left backed out, leaving Bredeson without a man (he doubled the DT, an acceptable decision) and left JBB with two guys to block. He blocked the inside guy, which is what you do--make the guy cover more distance.

This is a pre-snap issue, somehow. In my opinion protection has to slide away from where Shea is looking, so that if the blitzer is coming he can see that right away and throw to a hot route where that blitzer has vacated (in this case, perhaps Perry, who starts on a slant before breaking outside, would be the choice here if the LB hadn't dropped). Alternatively, Shea can look right, where the blitzer did come from, and throw to the TE in the space vacated by the guy that came.

This is an RPS issue, not a JBB issue.

Stunts weren't as big of a problem as last year, but there were occasional issues. That's why stunts are called, because they're hard to deal with.

On the sack/fumble that ended the game, there was a stunt in which the ND DL looped around not one but two companions to the right. The guy was originally on Ruiz, disengaged, and looped. Ruiz wound up having to chase him, and both Bredeson and Runyan wound up locked onto their men until it was too late. Because it was a stunt around two guys, Runyan didn't anyone to pass his guy off to, so at that point he was just picking which guy got a free shot at Shea.

Overall there was marked improvement, but still some issues to resolve.

Thank you... ND ran that same stunt several times in this game with similar results.  That's why I think it's a knee-jerk reaction to blame Runyan for those since the sack is coming around from his side.  But I really have no idea what he's supposed to do in those situations (nor do I know how to defend it... no way Ruiz is chasing him through the muck).

Regardless of crap that's been dumped on Runyan, I predict that he's going to grade out much better than people expect (that is, not good, but not much worse than everyone else).

Shea Patterson - Running for His Life. But seriously, our offensive line made Shea and McCaffrey look like the same guy. Frantically clap for the snap, feel pressure instantly, run from the pocket for your life, throw a dart across your body as a wall of defenders climb on your back.

I see a QB who can make the throws but the offense keeps shooting itself in the foot due to horrendous line play and some bad play calls. There are some good drives there we sheet the bed on.

Ok, doing it in slow motion, the pass pro was not nearly as bad as i thought..Ruiz was beat more than a couple times to the inside and Runyan was beat outside a couple times but nothing really awful.

Our creativity is dreadful, we can not get a running game going against a good defense to save our lives..CHRIS EVANS has got to get the ball in space ALOT MORE !!!! he has a special ability to make people miss and follow blocks.

Our coaches have got to trust our WRs and put up some 50/50 balls when the defense leaves them 1 on 1 down the field

So this video is good and it's my first chance to watch and just look at the OL (with occasional looks at routes and stuff) without bothering with other stuff.

Runyan is as bad as advertised, though there were times when he held is own. JBB got beat a couple of times but generally looked ok. One disappointment was that the interior rarely got beat, but they often got pushed, and that pocket compression kept Shea from finding space.

This usually happened with 4 or 5 rushers, and ND ran so much zone that it was tough to get guys open with Shea moving around. There are occasions where it seemed like nobody could get open, and that's a bit of a concern. Some of those times looked like RPS losses, though. That second-and-goal sack is interesting; I don't mind the call so much--passing is a normal strategy--but all of the receivers were blanketed and the OL got absolutely destroyed. Runyan, naturally, the major culprit.

Gotta disagree on the 2nd and goal pass from the 2 not being a terrible call.  2nd and goal from the 5 or further maybe that’s a reasonable pass.  That call was getting cute, Pete Carroll style.

Even the staff agrees- given the same scenario but running out of time at the end of the game they ran back to back times inside the 5 for a TD.

It was absolutely targeting against McKeon, but because he didn't go to the ground like he was hurt like the ND guy did, the officials didn't call it.

I thought Shea looked solid. You replace out current 'OTs' with two average ones and I think the story of Saturday night is a lot different. When Shea had time, he was regular zinging them in there

I feel a little better after watching that video.  Patterson can play.

The absence of big plays continues to be big problem.  I think there were only two shots downfield the entire game.

stephenrjking

They called more shots downfield, but protection often broke down before they could be taken. One Shea scramble for an almost first down was called to be a deep shot to Nico (at least, that was the first read) but Gentry, with solo blocking responsibilities, got burned by the blitzing OLB and Shea had to tuck and run. Time was often an issue.

Patterson was good enough to get Michigan points on three of the first four drives. The problem, of course, is that only one ended in points.

Work out the kinks, things will be fine.

Shea is a significant step up from what we have had since Rudock, but he's no miracle worker. As the season goes on we will see improvement from the offensive line.  Shea will also get better.  Going 20-30 against that D, coming off a serious knee injury, in a new system, on a new team...I think we are set at QB.

Shea looked really good throwing the ball IMO.  Even more impressive given he was under assault the entire game.  I don't get how many people are blaming our loss on him being overrated.

Ya'll,  Shea is good.  He will singlehandedly make us better than last year.  This was a tough first game on the road against a ranked team.  Let's wait to see how Wisconsin goes.  That will tell us much more.
