SF 49ers Press Conference - Harbaugh answers barrage of questions about Oakland, being back with SF next year, etc.

EDIT: MICHIGAN NOT MENTIONED AT ALL.

Jim Harbaugh seems really solemn. Not particularly enjoying himself anymore:

Some really interesting exchanges throughout, but especially starting at 2:36 mark, 2:45 mark and 4:09 mark.

Thanks, but help a brother out, here. It would have been nice if you could have told us up front if Michigan was mentioned, instead of making us fast-forward to 2:36 and 2:45 and 4:09 to see for ourselves.

Good god. I read the espn article regarding this. I don't know why, but I scrolled down to the comment section. Please do not do that unless you want your head to asplode. People who don't know what the fuck they're talking about need to not talk about it.

If I am thinking of the the right article, titled something to the effect of "Harbaugh Not Worried About Future" or something like that, then the guy who tried VERY hard to work a LeBron James reference into what there was of a discussion pretty much told you how coherent the points being exchanged were. If that's the article, yeah, it would have been better if most of those people had not said anything.

If Michigan lands Harbaugh and we win a bunch of games, he can be the lamest, say-nothing sack of beans on the planet in press conferences and I don't care.  If we lose a bunch of games, I will be frustrated if he refuses to address questions in an informative (or at least honest) manner.  Such is the power of winning - it buys you a lot of good will.

I agree, Stringer, that the fewer questions he has to answer about Michigan, the better.  I'm just concerned, because we all know that reporters love to stir the pot, prying for info, even where there isn't really anything of substance.  I guess I'm just surprised that as much as the reporters are poking the hornets nest in this presser, that they didn't even bother to speculate about Michigan.  I guess I'm just trying not to get my hopes up too high that Harbaugh is coming to Michigan...although I might be too late.

this is starting to worry me, too. When asked directly, guys like Schefter and Clayton all outright dismiss it and while most news sources don't even include us in the conversation, the ones that do include it as a fringe possibility.

I'm not saying this to be a negative d-bag, but honestly Occam's Razor tells me to to trust the established NFL media over anonymous whispering from M sources about something that sounds too good to be true. Virtually everybody who isn't a Michigan fan thinks there's a snowballs chance in hell that Harbaugh comes here, even college football reporters like Wetzel and Forde and the dude from SI have dismissed his candidacy. It increasingly feels to me like Harbaugh to Michigan would be a stunning turn of events.

Do NFL reporters ever acknowledge the possibility of a coach choosing college over NFL? It seems against their interest to do so. I have no confidence that Harbaugh would choose us over an NFL team (please choose us over an NFL team!) but I just don't think an NFL reporter is the most reliable source.

It's such an unusual situation, but my recollection is that NFL reporters broke the news on both Saban talking to Alabama and on Petrino. Schefter also went all in on Harbaugh to UM in 2011. I mean, they're still journalists trying to get a scoop... the NFL isn't going to shut Adam Schefter out if he reports Harbaugh to Michigan again.

I think it's natural for NFL beat reporters to by myopic about the NFL. There isn't much precedence for JH's situation. Saban and other coaches weren't succeeding in the NFL so college speculation made the most (or only) sense. With JH, most reporting on the NFL are going to report on NFL speculation. More clicks, closer to their audience, in their own job's wheelhouse.

I think it's incredulous to believe that highly paid and regarded NFL reporters would allow themselves to be scooped by, uh, an ex-radio host who publically tweets his, er, colorful thoughts on the Ferguson situation because of NFL bias. They will report what they hear, the NFL doesn't fear losing one coach to college... Harbaugh to Michigan isn't a threat to their billions of dollars in revenue or massive TV ratings.

Highest paid college coach is Nick Saban @ $7MM

Michigan is able to top those.
$85MM/yr in football revenue; $60MM in profit
(But not so sure about the willing part.)

IMO, the priorities are screwed up
if we don't use football revenues
to be excellent in football.

Harbaugh's not coming. It's just my hot sports take e-pinion, but I'd be willing to bet the farm on that at this point.

Regardless, Michigan needs to conduct an actual coaching search, and should already be putting out feelers to multiple coaching candidates. Guys like Mullen, Malzhn, Sumlin, Smart, and whomever else. If the fans, media, and AD are putting all of their eggs into the Harbaugh basket, we're already in trouble.

Yep ... If you want to get depressed go ask a non-Michigan fan what they think about Harbaugh to Michigan. Everyone that I have asked literally laugh out loud as it isn't even a possibility. He isn't even remotely thinking about it I suspect.

no offense, Ryno, but why in the world do I care what some Sparty/Buckeye/etc. trolls think of our chances of landing Harbaugh are? Do you think somehow these people have better insight into the situation? Not sure why all of these people (fans, trolls, anybody) think they have any bleeping idea what Harbaugh is thinking.

Actually, if you look around other sports blogs and forums (and no, not Eleven Warriors or RCMB) there are quite a lot of people who think he will be with New York or Oakland or Atlanta. And if the Bears wanted him, I'd actually concede all hope of us getting him... that would be an ideal situation for him to win a Super Bowl quickly and he played for Chicago for like 7 years.

You're right that it shouldn't influence anyone, but I think it's helpful to consider what we look like to other people. I guess I'm saying I'll bet that a lot of people with connections were saying Urban Meyer had a 51% chance of going to Notre Dame on more than one occassion, too, and we just laughed at their optimism

I don't doubt that pretty much everyone outside of the M fanbase thinks there's no way he's coming here.  They know that no successful NFL coach has ever gone back to college in the primes of their career.  But I'm not sure they understand the relationship he has with the school and the coach that tutored him and why this would entice him to return.  That's something that M fans would only know or care about.

here's all I'm going to ask you about this: a lot of reporters went to Michigan. Like a lot a lot. The local media in Detroit is absolutely lousy with Daily alums and others with university connections, and a fair few Wolverines are present in high profile positions nationally. They're not out of the loop. They hear the same things we do, they're aware (fully aware!) of what is posted on sites like this one. Why aren't any of them convinced enough to scream from the rooftops that Hackett and Harbaugh are buds, that we've got the inside track on Jim, that there is a better than 50% chance that he will be in Ann Arbor come the fall? It's not like they aren't speculating on his future anyway, it's not like some of them (Wojo comes to mind) aren't pitching the idea without offering anything in the way of prognostication. Hell, Schefter was the lone voice arguing that Harbaugh was considering coming here the last time so he's hardly opposed to running with those scissors.

Why is it that Oakand Raiders fans and New York Jets fans get to have their Harbaugh dreams validated every day in major newspapers and on ESPN while we have to rely on blogs and message board posters and third hand whispers from ex-players and Gregg Henson? I'm an old X-Phile... I Want to Believe. But sometimes that light in the sky really is just Venus.
