Scout's Take on UM Commits (+ Gary) at UA Game

Submitted by alum96 on

Webb and Newkirk breakdown the 3 UM commits, plus Gary's performance.

http://www.scout.com/college/michigan/story/1628771-under-armour-recap-…

I won't cut and paste Gary's comments - can read the story for it...basically drool.gif.  I only watched the first half but Oliver (Houston commit, #10 overall) and Gary seemed like the 2 monsters on the DL.

Sam's take: Kareem Walker -- Walker has seen and will see better days.  The Garden State star never saw much daylight between the tackles (none of the black team’s backs did because of the relentless d-line play led by Gary), and he was forced to bounce many of his carries to the outside. That just isn’t where his bread is buttered.  Walker is a downhill, one-cut, and go back… and that’s how he’ll be used in Ann Arbor.

Josh’s take: Ben Bredeson had an impressive week down at the Under Armour All-American game. He played at right tackle, and looked impressive doing it. He showcased good feet and didn’t struggle with faster defensive ends throughout the week. While he might end up at offensive guard at Michigan, he proved that he is versatile enough to play on the outside. And looks the part of a player who can hit the field early on in his career.

Josh’s take: At 5-foot-11, 230-pounds, Devin Bush Jr. looks the part of future middle linebacker at Michigan. He made a nice sideline tackle on future teammate Kareem Walker during the contest, and clearly has enough speed to play linebacker at the next level. He finished with three tackles, including .5 tackles for loss in the game. Overall, he’ll need to get stronger, but U-M’s weight program should do wonders for him in year one.

I watched quite a lot of his film but going against much better O-line than he faced in the season, I was impressed. Showed speed as well chasing down the RB along sideline. He looks yo be the difference maker that could lead M to multiple playoff appearances. Let's hope so......

Probably in the minority here but I think Smith, when healthy is pretty good.  He got his ankle twisted shortly after BYU and was never back to form until UF.  My thinking (hope?) is that he wasnt able to cut on his ankle so he would just get the ball and bang straight away for as many yards as he could.

Gary looked simply unblockable today. He also showed great hustle and speed when chasing the ball carrier from behind. He'll be at least in the DL rotation from day one, regardless of where he goes next fall.

Is going to be a monster. If he comes to UM I could see why Henry would want to leave for the NFL. Mone lurking behind him on the depth chart already is scary enough. Then bring back Glasgow and add a guy like Gary to the mix and who knows what happens.

Mone and Henry don't play the same position, so that doesn't make sense. Also, Michigan rotates defensive linemen a lot, so there is room for a second team of standout players. Then Wormley, Henry, Glasgow, and Charlton are all scheduled to depart after next season, so basically you need a whole new starting line in 2017.

Thanks for posting this Alum96 and the other updates you posted as well.  Good stuff.

The Walker breakdown seems accurate to me.  I don't think many expected much more for a RB in these type games, especially with the way the white teams DLine played.

The Bredeson breakdown seems like good news for me.  It sounds like he's quicker or more athletic than I expected. Good to hear.

The Bush breakdown seems accurate too.  Good speed but still needs a little more size or strength, but starting at LB at Michigan is in his future.

Great news, not unexpected. Over at Eleven Warriors, they are definitely dissing Walker, but they also aren't happy about the prospect of facing Gary for 3 - 4 years. They have the number two commit in the country, Bosa, but I think even the Buckeyes realize that Gary is a rare, rare bird, and one who will cause serious problems for any team he plays against.

My biggest concern continues to be at LB. Bush may be good, but I really wonder if anyone can step in who hasn't been in strength and conditioning, let alone learning schemes, etc., for at least a year. We're depending on Gedeon an awful lot. And I really don't know who on the roster at LB who will stay, and who will go. I see the following:

  • Allen Gant
  • Mike McCray
  • Noah Furbush
  • Jared Wangler
  • Chase Winovich
  • Rueben Jones

Honestly, I don't know how much any of these guys saw the field this year. I don't remember their names being called, or seeing them in UFR. As far as I could tell, we were limited to Morgan, Bolden, Ross, Gedeon, and Peppers (the swiss army tool who played everywhere). I kind of wonder if some of the guys listed above are among the 10 - 11 who "aren't coming back" next season. And I have no idea when those kind of announcements are made, and by whom, etc.

I could be wrong here, but I believe the comment from Harbaugh about the 10-11 guys who wouldn't be back were guys he believed could be playing on Sunday's. He even went as far to say that the team may take a few hours off to watch some of those players during fall camp.

And was at every practice, function, ceremony and the game.

My takes are as follows.

Bredeson by far had the best week of any commit for Michigan. He's seriously going to be a beast. He exclusively worked at Right Tackle. Bredeson went heads up many times with the best. He kept Gary in check on all his reps. I talked w him on Wednesday and at the Jersey presentation and he's awesome to chat with.

Bush was a mystery all wee. He looked good in praCtice and 1 on 1 drills, but during the 7 on 9's he was kinda All over the place. I saw his family at the Michigan game and his uncle was really happy about Michigan.

Walker is a lot bigger then you would think in person. He's very fast and had some good cuts in the position drills. I'm looking forward to seeing him.

Other takes

Landon Dickerson OL - looks like our loss as he's a monster and I spoke w him on multiple occasions and he was ours for the taking.

Landon Rice - TE is NASTY and he and Was my favorite player all week. His dad spoke w us and said if not for the distance M was his 1st choice.

Gary is all that's advertised, fast strong and smart. Very deserving of the #1 player

Agim he's fast and can possibly be one of the best from the week, was all over the place along w Benito Jones.

Also during the game Bush And Gary spent almost all there time together talking on the bench and joking around. When not in the game.

Jones LB - wants to come to M and he's in wait mode as the Rivals guys told me, he wants to go Blue but is waiting to make sure there is room.

And the two practices that were televised on ESPNU recorded, but I haven't had much time to process it all yet.

I saw Kareem on a couple series and he was rather underwhelming, but like Sam said there were definitely extenuating circumstances.

However ... his calves look like basketball player calves, not inside power back calves and that is the way he tends to run IMO ... sorry, don't kill the messenger, judge for yourself. There were backs on both teams who fought through tackles, Kareem was not one of em - not on the plays i saw.

Everybody raves about everything Rashan did and said and I saw quite a bit of tape on him. He looks really scary good to me. I think JH is gonna love the fact that he is not gonna have to teach him how to keep his mouth shut - he does it all on the field and not with his mouth.

I haven't seen Bush yet.
