I wonder if Albert negotiated that down. You let Frost know he’s being fired Oct. 1 and ask him if he wants to go through 3 weeks of people calling for him to be fired, or just rip the bandaid off now. Either way, he’s not getting $15M. Accepting a lower buyout now just lets the guy get on with the rest of his life 3 weeks earlier.

IMO absolutely no chance of that - Frost contractually is obligated to the $15MM and Alberts really had no leverage there.  Alberts trying to do that just gets all the lawyers involved and makes things emotional too.  Divorce is much better and easier when it’s as clean as possible.

I imagine this was done with good will (as much as that’s possible with a firing).  “We are moving on Scott - thanks for your service to the University - here’s the full buyout you are entitled to.”

He didn't even have that leverage.  Nebraska could suspend him (with pay) while they "investigate the charges" of criminal playcalling, or whatever.  Have him escorted off the campus, and name an interim coach.  Then, in three weeks, fire him.

Every coach has a skeleton in their closet or some player claiming he was abusive.  Frost wouldn't want to be investigated while he impotently sat by waiting for his buyout to go down and listening to the rumor mill grind on his reputation.

It's possible that Trev Alberts called Frost's agent right after the game and told him, "Take $10 million to go away now, or we'll let you twist in the wind for three weeks while you lose any last shred of dignity you had left and then walk away with $2.5 million less than you would have now. Your choice."

Then again, if that were the case, they probably would have let him resign and paid him off quietly. Given how crazy Husker fans are, It's more likely that some deep-pocketed booster called Alberts and told him he'd cover the difference if Alberts acted now.

I'm pretty sure Frost is the combination of cocky and delusional that thinks he's going to win the next three games and there's zero reason to accept a lower buyout to get fired earlier.

TBF, Frost's reputation has cratered so badly, twisting in the wind for three weeks can't do much harm.  The 1% chance Nebraska actually beats Oklahoma is worth sticking around to put a shiny sticker on turd of a resume for a future coaching gig at a (much) smaller program.

If they pay the full buyout instead of waiting three weeks, I'd be pissed as a Nebraska taxpayer.  How many students could go to college for free if they waited three weeks?  There're innumerable better uses for that money than giving it to Scott Frost so he'd be gone three weeks earlier.

If he stays 3 weeks, he loses the $7.5M and he gets lambasted for 3 weeks. It’s lose-lose for him. I’m guessing Alberts negotiated the buyout down. He’s in the position of strength here. If Frost says no, he’s just being stubborn and stupid, so offer him $8-10M and see what he does.

ask him if he wants to go through 3 weeks of people calling for him to be fired,

People have been calling for him to be fired for at least a year.  What's three weeks to him?  Besides, college football coaches work 100-hour weeks, they're not reading message boards.

I'm more inclined to believe Nebraska was just dumb and paid in full.  As they say, the N stands for Nowledge.

It looks like a booster came forward and wanted to pay the rest of the buyout because of Scott's QB career, and that sped up the firing.

And that's why I think this is the biggest flop in Big 10 history, bigger than Rich Rod. Everyone at Nebraska wanted this to work. Every booster wanted this to work. There's still boosters coming in for Frost to try to soften the blow of the firing because they like the guy so much. He was given every chance to make it work, there was no in-fighting or political sabotage or an AD with an itchy firing finger out to get him. He just sucked too much.

Thank you for reminding me which National Championship my Scotty won for Nebraska in the 1990’s. At my age, 60, I get mixed up occasionally on which one of the three National Championships my Scotty won for Nebraska in the 1990’s (It’s hard for me to remember because they win them so often.)

Sometimes I find myself feeling sorry for the Wolverwhines who only win National Championships in Football every 50 years or so. I guess I didn’t get so hung up on the National title that Nebraska won in 1997 because they won 3 in a four year span in the 1990’s and 5 in a twenty-eight year span between 1970 and 1997. I remember the first one they one in 1970 because I graduated from Nebraska in 1966. I guess if we only won the National title every 50 years, I would have been upset, too, when Nebraska and my Scotty stole the show from the Wolverwhines in the 1990’s.

By the way, Scotty sends his best. He’s retired from the NFL now after 5 years. I think he said he was making about $346,000.00 a year while in the Pros, which is probably more than all of you poor misled Wolverwhines make in a year combined.

Sorry to hear that the Wolverwhines lost to the Cornhuskers in the Alamo bowl. Hope poor Lloyd doesn’t lose his job. Seems like a lot of teams we beat this year lost their coaches. The maze, black, and blue will have other years. I expect you’ll win another National Championship in Football around the year 2046. Hope you all find enough to write about between now and then.

Best Regards,

Carol Frost

I never knew this existed. Of all the Scotts mom comments I somehow missed it.

Urban Scumbag Meyer will not take a HC position at a school with a weak recruiting base like Nebraska. Do a 300 to 400 radius and they basically have zilch HS football when compared to other powerhouse schools. Nebraska's hey day - back in the Osborne era - was supplied by Texas HS football (just like Oklahoma) and dried up when they left the Big 8 /12
