Schadenfreude: 2023 Nebraska (45-7)

Submitted by Decatur Jack on October 2nd, 2023 at 5:52 AM

Copy and pasted from anywhere I could find some good comments. Facebook, Twitter, Nebraska blogs, game threads, etc. So, without further ado...

Zero point zero percent chance Michigan could have beaten Nebraska in '97

michigan plays good defense. nebraska plays defense better

when those michigan players get there it's going to be 4 quarters of fuck you football! GBR

Nebraska pulls an upset! Count on it!

WOOOO BABY GO BIG RED I GOT A GOOD FEELIN BOUT THIS ONE

We are due for an upset.

michigan is the most overrated school/team/program of all time. watch us kick their ass and shock the nation! gbr

Bruh im tellin ya my huskers win this one, its happening

How can Michigan even hope to win? They may be ranked #2 but everyone in usa knows that Nebraska is the true heroes of college football! GO BIG RED! prediction 14-13 good guys

Michigan's 97 "championship" was a joke!! Huskers own them on September 30, 2023!!!!!

God in heaven I love Nebraska football and hate Michigan so much

My huskers are winning, dude ... i can't even lie bout it

Michigan aint played nobody. well they about to play the huskers! get ready for that first loss michigan lmao

Top 10 team loses on the road? Michigan at Nebraska!

gotta believe in nebraska this weekend, michigan overrated as always

Haarberg becomes a legend today

The Greatest Fans in College Football show up at Memorial Stadium. There is no place like Nebraska. Go Big Red. Oh, and fuck Michigan!

if i hear another go blue from those michigan twats i swear to god i'm punching a guy

We can win the west! Michigan's not even winning the east!

Our defense eats those stupid Michigan players. You KNOW it's going to happen!! GBR!

In the grit, the glory! Nebraska will beat Michigan today!

wow michigan thinks they're actually going to win. guess they've never faced this nebraska defense before. get ready to eat a bunch of turf, mccarthy.

Dude that JJ McCarthy kid is so overrated.

The whole Michigan TEAM is overrated!!!

I cannot wait for this game. I want a Husker win here so badly.

Taylor Swift about to fall in love with the Huskers after we kick Michigan's ass

M not winning in lincoln bruh

YO MY BOY COMPTON WILL BE THERE WOO GO BIG RED BABY! MICHIGAN FAILS OBVSLY

fuck michigan they are weasels!

Scott Frost should have beaten these asshols

Go Big Red! Huskers take down Michigan in a huge upset I predict

Michigan wins this game just like they won their 1997 title, by CHEATING

What happens when Michigan visits Nebraska? It's a statement win that Nebraska hasn't had in years. Coach KhakiPants gets overRhuled.

Michigan seems to always trip over their junk when they are expected to do big things nationally, so I hope we will see a repeat of that this year.

time for kickoff! how badly does Nebraska beat Michigan haha

I hope we break their backs.

omg if that stands its an incredible play by Michigan
i mean
it's gonna stand

Aaaaaaaand Michigan marches right down the field and scores. WTF BOYS!?!?

Who told Michigan they were allowed to score points in Lincoln?

God damn it well at least I have my runza

TD Michigan, so what? We gonna respond baby! Let's go boys! Go Big RED!!!

Our Huskers will be victorious despite the setback

well that's not how you want to start the game on offense

OMG WTF STOP THEM

Blackshirts have already allowed the most rushing yds in a game so far this year halfway through the first qtr.

How the fuck are we already down by 21?

And the mass exodus of Memorial Stadium begins.

the good news is Nebraska has become a second half team....right?

This comeback is going to be unreal

Fuck why am I even watching this??? Come on Nebraska!!!!!!!!

I really thought Michigan was overrated so why are they beating us?

Michigan, I hate you. Sincerely, a Husker for life.

I was really hoping we wouldn’t reach “Welp, I’m gonna go start the mower” Time until the 4th quarter

Just need to see some fight. Just a little. Don’t crawl into a hole and die during one of the biggest recruiting weekends of the year. Show us something!

this game is like us trying to take a shit and michigan shoves it right back up our ass

We haven’t been shut out since 1996, TIME TO PUT UP SOME POINTS ON THE THIRD STRING. MAKE HISTORY.

No one in human history has ever experienced pain like Nebraska fans.

before the season I predicted we had a real shot of winning the B1G West. so far the only thing that has gotten in the way of achieving that is we haven't won any of our B1G games

Take note Rhule...This is what an OL looks like. It be founds me our past coaches think otherwise.

this really is a dumpster fire. I'm not ure any of us knew just how bad this program had gotten. if it isn't talent, it's development. probably a ton of both. this kind of wreckage doesn't fix fast.

Michigan's 2nd stringers beating our ass

Let’s spend another 450 million on this program. Seems like a good investment

Hold em under 50! Don't get shutout!

Ok I think its time to have a serious discussion about being in the big ten. why do we allow michigan to just come in here and blow us out? no one signed up for this. we are nebraska. we aren't supposed to lose. this is the greatest football program of all time. I'M SO TIRED OF THIS BULLSHIT!

I appreciate Michigan burning down the clock.

Harbaugh has always taken the foot off the gas against us. Him and Urban seem to have a soft spot for our miserable program

Shouldn't have angered the football gods with the 97 headline.

I still remember when Michigan was thinking about firing Harbaugh, and I was like ... please God ... Fire him before he gets it going

it's another score for michigan

McCarthy could make love on the sideline and they’d still beat us. Smh

We're getting a good ole ass kicking

The rot in this program was deeper than any thought.

Another sack. There have been approximately 4 enjoyable plays to watch today.

In the history of Nebraska looking helpless in football games, is this the most helpless they've looked?

Nebraska scored. Not shutout. Staggering, beat to a pulp, but we get a punch in. Nice.

At least it wasnt a shutout.

we're getting our whatever kicked into last week, picked up, then kicked ahead into next week, then picked up again, and brought back to Memorial Stadium so the process can be repeated.

Michigan looks like old Nebraska. Physical, nasty and deep in the trenches. Nebraska looks like a perennial loser, soft, slow and missing game changing talent.

Maybe trev wants to think about putting a retractable roof on memorial so volleyball can play in it as well. That way Nebraska can still win in Memorial.

holy god, this team is terrible. not sure how they're going to find 2 more wins

We all knew we'd probably lose this game, but we expected at least some fight. This is embarrassing

Scott Frost set us back soooo bad bruh

Why did I think we even had a chance?

This is a glorified scrimmage!

My Huskers should be ASHAMED of this performance, just like my husband

The good news is it can't get any worse, right? GO Big Red. God I hate everything.

45-7. Who saw this coming? NOT ME

IF THERE WAS A GOD HE WOULD MAKE SURE NEBRASKA NEVER LOSES TO THESE MICHIGAN FUCKS

Good lord Matt Rhule getting a lesson today in what Big Ten football is

The MAC conference is looking to expand. I think we could win a MAC championship in 3-4 years.

that's funny and sad at the same time.  that said, and Lord willing it will happen, i would love to see one after the game v. sparty, and the one v. ohio.  not counting my chickens until they're hatched but there might be some real dandies in either of those two pathetic fan bases.

This just reaffirms that Nebraska fans are awesome. I appreciate how much they believe in their team.

One day, they'll have a cyclical run and other than when they play us, I hope they do well.

Best fans in the cfb.

Best fans in the cfb.

I was at the game in Lincoln (hence why this is posted on Monday) and there was a fair amount of shit talking by Husker fans to me. I personally don't like them and I think the "nicest fans" thing is a complete myth. Their fans are just like everyone else. Good ones and bad ones.

I appreciate how much they believe in their team.

Every team's fans believe in their team. Literally every one.

Again, I was at the game. Husker fans were emptying out before half time. Yeah, they showed up at the beginning for the sell out streak, but as soon as they went down 21-0, they were gone.

Was also at the game and wow did we have opposite experiences. I've been to most B1G stadiums for a Michigan game, and I honestly can't say there's even a close second place to Nebraska for having the nicest fans. Can't even count how many "congratulations" I heard after the game. It was odd.... slightly unsettling in fact. I think they've absolutely earned their "best fans" reputation. I also didn't think the stadium emptied to an egregious degree. I'd 100% recommend catching an away game in Lincoln to anybody who hasn't yet.

I will wish good things on Nebraska when they vacate their fraudulent '97 title.  Not one moment before.

Instead, they're doubling down.  The "kicked their way to 'victory" team is accusing the '97 Wolverines of cheating?! Run that by me again?!

Nebraska fans are delusional, and they can burn that stadium to the ground and salt the ashes for all I care.

The other comment I saw multiple times was something along the line of 'well, Rutgers didn't have any problem scoring on them'. They are keen observers, that bunch.

Those are comedy gold!

They think any "cheating" that occurred in 97 was on the Michigan side? Oh my sweet summer child, let me introduce you to Phil Fulmer, and his "bowl coalition" buddies that intentionally voted Michigan outside the top 2 to fuck Michigan over. Oh, and I still say Fulmer let Nebraska do what they did in that Orange Bowl. They barely even attempted to put up a fight.

Personally, I was thinking more along the lines of the fact that Nebraska was one of the more obvious abusers of steroids during this time as well as the fact that at that point the inmates were running the asylum ala Urban Meyer at Florida with all the criminal activity that was tolerated by players as long as they helped "Big Red" win football games.

I've always lumped Tom Osborne into the same bucket as Jim Tressel and Mark Dantonio: guys who presented a veneer of sanctimony to the world but were massive hypocritcal frauds and definitely win at all costs; ethics and morals be damned.

jmblue

October 2nd, 2023 at 7:15 AM ^

The steroid thing could be true, but the issue with 1997 Nebraska is that against Missouri, a Nebraska player illegally kicked a ball up in the air and then a teammate caught it to tie the game on the last play of regulation.  Somehow the refs missed it.  (Same stadium where Colorado got a 5th down.) NU then won in OT.

I think Osborne turned when the Oklahoma mess in the mid 80's got them in trouble with the NCAA.  For a while Osborne was competing against a cheating Oklahoma and a cheating Colorado, I think he saw what was happening and lowered his standards to compete.  He wanted one more shot at greatness and thats how you get a Lawrence Phillips staying on your roster.

The comment about the roids is spot on, very different looking Nebraska program these days.

Exactly. Growing up a Mizzou fan, they constantly ran up the score on us and other teams and took great delight doing so. Even during our best years in the 70s and 80s, Bo only ran up the score on Illinois, which was payback for what they did to one of his assistants. And the whole Lawrence Phillips issue took hypocrisy to a new level.

I truly enjoy the schadenfreude of watching Nebraska wither in the wilderness. They may be nice people, but their fanbase is a mixture of passive aggressiveness and the hypocrisy of being holier than thou.

WolverineHistorian

October 2nd, 2023 at 12:04 PM ^

Splitting hairs here but the 70-21 and 69-13 wins over Illinois were technically not running up the score.  In 1986, Bo pulled Harbaugh from the game when we were up 45-13.  The 2nd and 3rd string quarterbacks ended up throwing touchdown passes and we got a couple TD runs from the 2nd stringers.

Much the same in 1981.  Steve Smith and Anthony Carter were pulled when it was 49-21 and the backups looked as unstoppable as the first string players.

Mike White was a toolbag and Bo did hate him.  But that was not running up the score.  Although I’m sure Bo was beaming on the inside.

Running up the score is a Big 8 / SWC tradition.  The only times I can really think of Michigan running up the score are Harbaugh vs. Rutgers (and even then, they couldn't play walk-ons because they couldn't bring walk-ons), the Illinois ones (yes, those were intentional), and 61-7 over Houston in '92, which was largely seen as payback for an '89 game where Houston beat SMU 95-21 as SMU was recovering from the Death Penalty, and Houston's assery in general.  They'd apparently also thrown a bomb on the last play of a 31-13 victory over Illinois the week before: https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1992-09-27-9203280262-story.html (by this point, we weren't mad at Illinois anymore).

"Maybe trev wants to think about putting a retractable roof on memorial so volleyball can play in it as well. That way Nebraska can still win in Memorial."

Haha. I like that some of them thought they might actually have a shot in the beginning. I must say, I wasn't terribly worried.

Schadenfreude is so much better when you actually dislike a team. It's well documented that Nebraska fans and alumni are decent folks so these comments are hard to take seriously.

I can't think of another nationally recognized blue blood who has lost relevancy for such a long drought. Maybe Miami?

Either way, Michigan needed a game like this away from Ann Arbor to shake off the stagnant vibes of the OOC schedule and the snoozer that was Rutgers. On to Minny that still won't prove much but at this point it's about winning on the road and overcoming adversity, whenever that will be. Last year it was Illinois prior to OSU but I'm hoping the team gets tested sometime before PSU.

I see a lot of "Us" circa 2009 in Nebraska football these days, only I think its probably much much worse for them and I'm fine with that.

Nebraska lost its identity years ago and hasn't figured that out.  They did Frank Solich dirty and sort of deserve this misery in some way.  Some good not great teams early in their Big 10 days but they have done nothing but make me wonder just how good some of those Nebraska/Oklahoma really were playing in the Big 8 days, talk about 1 game seasons.  Even the Big 12 was never really that great and Nebraska struggled in that too once Tommy Frazier graduated and Osborne retired.

Nebraska is staring a 7th straight losing season square in the face and hasn't won a conference championship of any kind in 24 years.

Blau

I think MSU should really take a play out of Nebraska's hiring playbook and try to get a coach similar to Rhule based on his demeanor and strategy.

Now Rhule might not set the world on fire and he might not even be the answer long term but he's certainly played to their strengths as team, made personnel changes when something hasn't worked, and hasn't been an dishonest asshole. Get a decent guy in there to weather the current shitstorm, go back to your 3* warrior mentality, and maybe don't pay your coach $95 million for nonconsensual phone sex. Simply as that.

Thanks for sharing - it was funny to see the invisible line between the pre-game comments and the post kick-off comments.

I have a hard time getting too pumped up against Nebraska - when I went to see Michigan in Lincoln they were, hands down, the most gracious and welcoming fan base I've ever encountered.  So while I enjoy beating them I'd be happy to see them return to relevance in the west (even if the division concept may be going away)

Zero point zero chance? Man those guys suck at math because that’s not a real thing. Almost literally anything is possible. At least 0.1% chance? You know what is 0%? The chance Nebraska has to beat Michigan in 2023. That one is zero.

Always love some good schadenfreude! Like others have said, I feel a little bad since I don't mind the Nebraska fans.

Also, aside, I always find it weird how many of these consensus "nice" alumni bases have such a deep disdain for Michigan (SO many Fuck Michigans). Even when Nebraska has some root for the ire because of 1997.

I support Michigan's approach of getting reps for the players on the depth chart - game experience, especially on the road, is invaluable.   The 3's and 4's (on the depth chart) bust their behinds and deserve an opportunity.

However, this past Saturday - oh my - I wish they could have prevented that scoring drive and shut out the Huskers in Memorial Stadium.
