Bell's Amber. Enjoying one of my fav Michigan brews and watching the Tigers before I move to Boston in 10 days.
Saturday Night Drinking Thread
Homebrew IPA. Trying to kick the keg so that I can start cabonating my Special Bitter tomorrow while I brew an Oatmeal Stout.
I'm brewing up my first pumpkin ale tomorrow, which should be good to go towards the end of September for some fall football.
I just cracked my keg of citra dry hopped American Wheat. I modeled it after Oberon, but with a bit more citrus nose. Cheers!
That's awesome. I remember when you brewed this batch several weeks ago when I was about to brew my first batch. I was shooting for a pale ale but I think it morphed into more of a pilsner. Had my first bottle a couple nights ago (testing 2 weeks after bottling) and it was great (light and refreshing). I hear that after week 4 they're the best and ready to drink??
If they are able to morph from ale conditions to pilsner conditions and survive.
I think he's probably referring to "hop water" or "IPA light" because he may have used too much water for the recipe... I always "cold crash" my beers to clarify them and the keg or bottle condition and the yeast survives.
I brewed a peach lager yesterday on Mexican lager yeast (WLP890). Too bad I have to wait 12 weeks for this!
that peach lager sounds awesome. love me some pyramid apricot ale.
an Irish Red that I brewed with three pounds of smoked malt. I'll use four or five pounds next time. Still good though. I just kegged a blonde ale that is pretty good, and should get better.
Tonight I'm drinking Vat 33 IPA from CJs in Commerce Township. Beer and food are both pretty damned good there, as is the talent. Happy Sat night, everyone.
Sunset Wheat and watching the Tigers.
Quit drinking recently. It's fucking terrible, but my body is a wonderland.
Do you see a noticeable difference from not drinking? Or have you made exercise and diet changes too?
Rehab is for QUITTERS.
Bud Stars and Stripes
I am settling in with some Paulaner Premium Lager and switching between the Tigers game and the final night of the Olympics. I returned home a few hours ago from a dual birthday party celebration at Weber's - my son's 5th and my father's 70th. Both birthday.
It's the summer and nothing feels better than a Corona with lime. Always sunny in Cali.
Welcome to the Board.
Wild cherry pepsi from taco bell.
12 more pages of FAR lecture and then it is time for either Short's Wizard or Founders Centenial IPA. Maybe my mgoamigos can help me out on this one...
I'd go with Short's Wizard
The board has spoken
Speak for yourself, Moron.
Okay, I took your advice and gave it a shot. It was an individual beer that I received as a gift. It looked and smelt good, but it didn't taste good. I opened the ipa and do not regret the decision.
Centinnial IPA is one of the best damn IPAs out there (MY opinion of course). Red's Rye is often imitated, never duplicated. Founders is my Graceland.
Completely agree. The only one I like more is HopSlam and my hopslam stash is gone until next year
but not always available. Centennial is like the horny girl down the street...she always seems to be available when you need her.
My GF lives in Grand Rapids, so I'm able to go to Founders a lot. Regardless, we are SO lucky here in Michigan. Did you know there are over 110 breweries in Michigan now, with another 10 or so on the way before year end? Awesome for us craft beer lovers.
Yeah and I just saw that Former Founders head brewer is going to Perrin. That should be good, it's the guy who started dirty bastard and Kentucky breakfast stout. Should lead to some interesting developments.
Your gf lives in Grand Rapids? Have you been to HopCat yet? If you haven't, and you like beer you need to go. It is the best beer selection I have seen and the food is decent too.
My GF actually LIVES IN COMSTOCK PARK, so we drive by Perrin every couple weeks to see if any progress. Probably this fall. Didn't know it was a Founders brewer, but not surprised, and yes I'm sure it will be great.
Hopcat has great selection, but their own beers aren't so great (a couple are okay). Have you been to Michigan Beer Cellar in Sparta? It's about 15 minutes north of the city, and quite good actually. Schmoz is decent too. Also, there are two more breweries (Mitten and Elk) opening in GR before year end. Very exciting.
Old Boyz Brew House (Spring Lake) and Odd Side Ales (Grand Haven) are also very good.
I have to give them a try next time I am out that way. I have family around spring lake so I will be heading there for sure.
I live more in the Flint area, so we are spoiled by The Redwood Lodge who has some great beer that isn't mass produced. If we go north on 23 we hit both black forest and Frankenmuth brewery who have some decent selections as well. And both Dragonsmead and Kuhnhenn are close by as well. I don't know if you have had it but Final Absolution is a very good Belgian trippel, and under the kilt is good but it's no founders db.
I love the fact that we have all these great breweries, that we can discuss and you always learn more about it. All Ohio has is great lakes and thirsty dog! Ha we win again!
Sorry for the double post, but both Final Absolution and Under the Kilt are Dragonmead
Dragonmead is really awesome. Toughest thing about going there is deciding what to get!
I live in Waterford, so Redwood Lodge is in our top ten for sure. Great beer and great food too. The Munich Helles is one of my favorites there. VERY tasty. I want to get a cornie keg filled, but it's hard for me to get there when the brewers are available to fill.
The food is still really good, but it was better a few years back. The beer is still top knotch. Have you been to Alex's market on Grange Hall Rd and I-75. One of the best selections I've seen. And there is a restaurant in holly, called blackthorne, it's not well known but they got a real good selection of beers. Last week they had some Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA. The food is good enough, but let's face it to go for the beer. Check it out for sure
just about every time I go to Redwood, 'cuz I usually ride my motorcycle there. I'll look for Blackthorne...is it on Holly Road, or what? Downtown?
It's in downtown old holly. The address is 105 s. Saginaw
The only IPA that is brewed in Michigan that I may like more than Centennial is ControversiALE from Short's. Two Hearted is up there too.
in late June, but ControversiALE wasn't available, that I remember. WAIT, that used to be "Hangin' Frank", right? That beer was/is AWESOME! Bartender told us the whole story about why they changed the name (don't know if you're aware or not). Great stuff.
You're right about the name. I never had it when it was called the Hangin Frank but I remember hearing the controversy around the old name (hence the new name). I'm from northern Michigan so I always try to make it to Short's whenever I go home. Awesome, awesome place. I highly recommend the pub to anyone in the area.
EDIT: Hangin Frank/ControversiAle info http://beerstreetjournal.com/hangin-frank-leads-to-controversiale/
Leine's summer shandy while watching a Winston Churchill special on NBC.
Sailing today, which is to say I've been drinking all fookin' day. Since about noon, I guess. Molsons and Labatts early, Oberons later on. Truly it's a Pure Michigan weekend, with sailing today and heading up north tomorrow to hang out with a friend at his cottage.
Homemade white sangria. Having a good citrus liquor really gives a nice bite.
Wailua Wheat from Kona Brewing.. Enjoying the last few days of vacation before heading back to Oregon and I am really looking forward to the start of the season; watching Michigan football and tailgating at Oregon games. Man I miss being back in Michigan.
Budlight Platinum (BL Plats) and feeling right... shoutout to Riley Reiff and the future of Matt Stafford's blindside being protected on the road to the Super Bowl!
Cocaine. A ton of cocaine
I'll be over..
Eat some more poison dumbass.
I'm watching the second half of a Week 1 preseason game. Clearly I have an itch to scratch.
Why wouldn't you want to watch Jimmy Clausen?
I am reliving some nice memories from 2007 and 2009.
It's a long story, that involves a sordid childhood, a spell back firing and a scar. I really don't want to get into it.
What the hell?
Had a family part of byob tasting today which I supplied the ultra pretentious goose island vintage collection. So I am killing off inventory of Pere Jacques and Pepe Nero. All of the Sofie and Matilda was already enjoyed :(
Edit: 1 inventory (lil drunk)
Vodka and orange juice. Arguing football (specifically UM vs Bama) against the sec fans here in south Carolina. Sigh...I miss Michigan
Welcome to the Board to you as well. Keep fighting the good fight against those evil SEC fans.
For the warm welcome. I've been reading the blog daily for two plus years and moving to SEC country finally pushed me to join the fun.
Mmm, watching Clausen get sacked still feels good. Feels right.
Arcadia ales sky high rye
Arizona peach iced tea because I'm writing a paper on the history of England's and France's nuclear policy.
I drink Labatt and Molson by the case. Same price as the Buds and Millers. I am one of the moron graduates. But college was the best years of my life. Shit 7 yrs of college down the drain.
First Saturday Drinking Thread I can (legally) participate in. Starting off with some beer, a hocker pschorr,
Happy (Belated) Birthday!
Thanks! I'm finally past my birthday hangover. It took a couple days.
May I say, you've made an excellent choice for your first legal drinking thread! Happy belated birthday, in that event, as well!
Happy birthday ? Wish it was the day of!
As do I. Sadly there are no Monday/Sunday night drinking tbreads
The time change works in your favor, you can do the "it's my birthday" schtick every few states. Plus the hour difference works in your favor when drunk dialing/texting.
I got more free drinks than I can remember without changin time zones.
Dinner at Seva in A2 with Atwater Pale Ale, and now Blue Light while watching the Olympics and Tigers.
Also, the Rangers Jerseys are terrible - they look like pajamas.
Sodastream fountain mist. It's a homebrew.
One does not simply sip on Smirnoff Ice.
That girl's face is priceless.
King of Beers and some Tigers baseball. Hoping these next three weeks go by pretty quick!
Drinking a couple of bottles of Unibroue 17 Grande Reserve with friends and cellaring a few more bottles
tremendous. I had a trois pistoles this afternoon. I am drinking a Lucifer now. It has one of the biggest heads I've ever seen.
I need to get a few bottles...Fin Du Monde is one of my favs.
Stoudt's double ipa. Exactly what i needed after a long week.
I was at the brewery on Thursday. The tripel is quite good as well.
mount gay rum and tonic...with a little lime. Delicious.
Try Havana Club (not available in the U.S., obviously). I hadn't had it until a recent trip to Montreal and a bartender suggested the 7 year-old. It was very good. Very smooth, and excellent with a lime wedge.
YES! I've heard that Havana Club is actually legal in Florida.. Does anyone know anything about this?
The "Havana Club" available in the U.S. is actually made by Bacardi. I don't know if it's any good because I haven't tried it. On the other hand, it kind of strikes me as similar in nature to smoking tobacco grown from "Cuban seeds". Close, but ... Well, you know the rest.
Damn, that figures. thanks, You've been helpful.
I am always looking to expand my horizons! Thanks for the rec.
as always.. I stick with what works..
So much Bacardi Limon. Just finished my summer internship, and I'll be moving back to Ann Arbor for the last time on Tuesday. Time flies, man.
Of the summer, so Oberon it is. Maybe some Sam Adams as well
Drinking a few Grand Teton Bitch Creek E.S.B.'s and may have a few Odell IPA's later.
Cosmo for me...at Phoenicia in Birmingham.
- Blue light while staining deck
- Sam Adams October Fest
- Busch Light to save the last October Fest for breakfast tomorrow, damn that shits good.
- Working on some milk and cookies now to avoid ulcers.
I'm in Canada for the night. Steamwhistle + labatt 50 FTW.
settled into our rental at Burt Lake. Had some fantastic steaks on the grill, took the kids out trolling for walleye for a couple hours (got 4 nice ones), made a fire and enjoyed a Buffalo Trace bourbon while contemplating beingness and nothingness.
And just cracked a cold Molson for poring over detailed contour maps of the lake, planning on banging the walleyes hard tomorrow, along with some tubing and other water-related fun.
Whey Protein Shake and H20...the hard stuff
Lager of the lakes (Bell's) and a Founder's porter. I shall miss Michigan; fortunately I've been stockpiling its beer quite extensively. Always be prepared for a more turbulent future.
Speakeasy Double Daddy IPA. One of SF's finest.
Just registered tonight and this is my first post! Coming at you tonight from the DFW, where our boys will face off against Bama in 3 weeks. Looking forward to hitting up some College Gameday and the game! Oh, and I've topped off the last 1/4 of the bottle of rum tonight with a few cokes.
Welcome to the blog. I lurked for years before I posted, once you start its hard to quit.
A nice hoppy red ale to welcome in this early fall weather we are having in Michigan. Cant wait for the season!
Lucky Thirteen and Hoopstoopid are two of my new favorite beers. I have been very impressed with Lagunitas.
More beer, because Gene Lamont is awful at coaching baseball.
They call him Geno so that's cool. Then there's that US women's hoops coach. Here's to the Genos.
Arrogant Bastard. I'm happy.
I had the oaked arrogant bastard last weekend. That's a nice beer.
That's probably my favorite of the Arrogant Bastard bunch, I was really impressed.
First time I have tried this brand. Smooth sipping. I'm kinda liking it.
Watching us get completely screwed at the Iowa game on BTN.
Love me some Jolly Pumpkin. Putting on Cosmo's Factory
New Holland Poet Oatmeal Stout. Just discovered it last night, definitely suggest it
Sancerre and Chateauneuf du Pape in Vegas. What a sorry place!
1. Ballast Point Dorado
2. Alpine Duet (simtra IPA)
Screwed up back changing kids' bunk bed sheets...really screwed it up
3 new Belgium Ranger IPA
4... Ice, Vicodin, bed.
I miss Strohs.
Finished up a delicious vodka and tonic. And now it's bedtime.
From New Glarus. While sitting on my friend's dock on Lake Mendota, in view of UW's beautiful campus. A happy wolverine in badger country, or a badger with the heart of a wolverine!

Tim Hortons coffee...mmm
