Saturday's dilemma: hockey or football?

Submitted by bdsisme on

Saturday night, Michigan hockey hosts Bentley at 7:35ET at Yost.  As a season ticket holder, I feel obligated to go.  However, as you already know, Michigan football plays at NW at 7ET.

My dilemma is: do I stay home and watch the football game, or go to the hockey game and watch the football game after knowing the outcome? And before you suggest DVR'ing the football game and watching it immediately afterwards, I have to say that it'll be nearly impossible to NOT become informed about the game, considering that I'll be surrounded by people with smartphones.

EDIT: Wow, overwhelmingly "football" response!  That is my gut feeling as well, but I would think there's something to be said about supporting another Michigan team in person when the other game is away and televised (so you can watch it at your convenience).  Even though I'll probably side with "footbaw!", no one wants to play devil's advocate here???

Bro, like the guy I'm replying to said. This should not even need to be asked. There are PLENTY of hockey games to watch but only twelve (more often than not, thirteen and now the possibility of fourteen with the Big Ten title game). Not to mention, hockey plays a bunch of scrubs early in the season.

Look, I love hockey, as it is my second favorite sport, but if I have a choice to watch the Michigan Wolverines play a football game or the Michigan Wolverines (or Red Wings I suppose) play a hockey game, I'm choosing the football game.

Why does the football team need us to sit on our couches and watch the game? I mean, if literally every single Michigan football fan decided to either go to the game at Northwestern or not watch it, how would that impact the team in the slightest?

Meanwhile, the hockey team is actually playing a home game and would like people to show up and help give the team the competitive advantage it has at Yost.

the hockey team will play a ton of games. This one is against an opponent I'm not sure actually exists. We get 12 guaranteed football games per year. You don't miss those.

This is the logic that makes the student section empty for the first three games so far. I feel like I'm the only one cheering at times. It's gonna be empty again Saturday, isn't it?

Maybe I'll just do the same thing... I dunno.

your dilemma to a point, but I am pretty sure you have to watch the football game...There will be plenty of opportunities to go to Yost later in the year and they are playing the Bentley Falcons...

1.) I couldn't believe the question was even asked

2.) I relish the vitriol

Also guys, I'm not in the minority on this.  A sport involving rednecks turning continuously to the left for 3.5 hours has now surpassed your beloved sport in popularity. They show it on fucking VS.  Lots of otherwise tedious/stupid things become infinitely more interesting when you see them live, that is not really an argument in hockey's defense.  It's why people go see Rocky Horror Picture Show, it's not because it's fucking Shoah. But no, everyone loves hockey, sorry to have offended.

You must not be a hockey fan and that's fine because this is the U.S.A., but let me tell you that you're silly if you don't like it. Hockey is such a great sport, far better than everything except football. I have never been to Yost, but I want to some day.

If you have a problem with hockey, then you have a problem with yourself.

you have a ticket, and it's easy to have a very similar experience watching the football game later but impossible to do so with the hockey game.

as it happens, i had to miss the SDSU game, despite having a ticket, because of a work obligation, and it wasn't that bad knowing what happened. in fact, i didn't get around to watching the game until thursday, and it was kind of nice having several days' worth of analysis in my head while i watched.

What happend in your life that would foster such a strong negative sentiment toward hockey?  Hate?  Really?  I honestly believe that in all my 30-odd years that's the first time I've ever heard/read that.

That said...watch the football game.

If it was about going to either or watching either on tv, I would definetely say football. But since you have tickets to hockey, I would say that. Watch the football game after knowing the score.

I'll say hockey: Yost is a special place, and it's embarassing when it's part empty, especially for regular season games.

You can get football score updates on your phone, and with the new video boards they might even be able to show football highlights in between periods. Plus, the hockey game has a chance at being a blowout, so you can compromise and leave in the 2nd period (around halftime for the football game), and still see the most important parts of both.

I'm pretty sure that's what I would do if I were in town this weekend.

You should stay home and watch the football game.  Take it from someone who has lived in Massachusetts my whole life and never even knew that Bentley has a hockey team.

Hockey, and it's not even close.

You'll be with other Michigan fans who are just as curious to hear the score, and you'll all have the chance to celebrate together.  Your presence in front of a TV has nothing to do with how well the football team performs.

Watch the game that means the most regardless of tickets or sport.  That being said, you know what I would do.

Then again I don't think there is a single hockey team in alabama at any competetive level, so I don't get into that sport much.  But it is interesting to watch.

I will be at the game in Northwestern this saturday, and I agree with Bronson that Hockey is a snoozefest, almost as boring as baseball.  With that said, going to a hockey game at Yost is a pretty incredible experience.  Hell, I even enjoyed the Big house game last year.  Hockey is one of those sports you have to see live, otherwise it is just boring

Disagree. It's a subjective argument anyways, but most people I know that think hockey and baseball are boring to watch, just don't know the sport well. I can understand baseball because a little more because batters step out of the box every pitch and pitchers take too much time in between pitches, but hockey is probably the most fast paced sport out there. Great spectator sport both in person and on TV IMO

I agree completely about people not understanding hockey. My dislike of baseball also stems from it taking so long to do so few things (the MLB can get a three hour game down to twenty minutes by only showing the actual playing time of the game). So basically, I think you're right about everything.
