Sam Webb this A.M. - up to 13 more in the '16 class

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Was just listening to the Recruiting Roundup on WTKA. Sam Webb said that he's starting to think that we'll take up to 13 more in this class, not 9 as he'd previously thought. As most MGoBloggers know, Sam usually doesn't just make this stuff up. He's very tight with the coaching staff so it's unlikely to be just speculation on his part.

His best guess list was pretty strong too. He added a certain running back to the list and a Tight End along with the Big guy from NJ to be part of this class.

That would make me happy but the most glaring need for next year is a couple immediate difference makers at LB and WR. I think we're a legit top 10 team next year and if we add the right pieces we could easily be top 5.

I'm gonna take a stab at it:

Kareem Walker; Issac Nauta; Rashan Gary; LeVert Hill; Nordin; Dylan Crawford; Pie Young; Chris Daniels; Carlo Kemp; Devin Bush; Terrence Davis; Jonathan Jones; and David Long or Lamar Jackson.

Yes but certainly you just expect a "servicable guy" as a transfer.   I dont think the Wrs need another servicable guy - we have 2 and you have to assume one of the litany of young guys who will be a year older will be a good 3rd and 4th.

LB is another story - we could use a Blake Countess to Josh Furman level player there immediately for 2016.

You also just expect a "serviceable" guy because there isn't a significant supply of really good grad transfer LBs and WRs.  You see good QB's on the transfer market (OKorn, Greyson Lambert at UGA, Oklahomas's guy, etc.) because only one can play at a time and there is little rotating of that position. If you lose the starting gig to an underclassman or you don't fit a new coaches system preferences, there is a good chance you'll be a backup for a long time and it makes sense to transfer.  If you're a good LB or WR chances are you will get snaps even with guys ahead of you due to the fact that three or more play at a time, the positions tend to rotate depth, and, as frequent contact bearing positions, the injury rate is higher than for QB's.  All in all, I wouldnt expect transfers at these positions that are markedly better than our current guys, unless we get lucky.

I'm counting Evans. Unless we land Mecole Hardman, no one of them is likely to make a big immediate impact. There's still a reasonable chance that somebody would, though.

I'm less worried about WR than LB. I think there's a good chance that Chesson makes another step forward next year. He's already become a big play threat, just needs to be a consistent weapon. We're going to have plenty of #2 and #3 options.

I suspect that Harris' injuries have prevented him from developing the kind of strength and mass he needs to really contribute at the college level.  I'd like to see what he can do if he is able to put on another 10 lbs. or so in addition to improving his technique.

Although I agree it's rare - it does happen and guys like Braylon weren't really needed as freshmen because we had good upperclassman receivers. Mario Manningham was a guy who contributed right away, just ask Penn State. That said, let's not forget we have Brian Cole and Grant Perry. One more year for those two wil make a big difference.

I wouldn't say UM had a bunch of good upperclassmen at wr in 2001.  Marquise Walker was a stud but after that it dropped off considerably.

In terms of WR production in 2001, it went:

81 catches, 1043 yds - Walker

19 catches, 207 yds - Calvin Bell

14 catches, 252 yds - Ronald Bellamy

3 catches, 94 yds - Tyrece Butler

3 catches, 38 yds - Braylon
