Rutgers beat writer suggests adding Army, Navy to B1G for 2020

Submitted by mgohusker on July 14th, 2020 at 11:07 AM

Army and Navy are free to pursue competitions after the Patriot League's decision to cancel fall sports.

The Big Ten should offer the academies affiliate membership today.

Fuck all of that.  1. I hate playing service academies 2. Adding more teams and more games increases the COVID risk and thus increases the risk of a cancelled season (if we even have one to begin with).

Do people still really think there will be a season this year, let alone that we should be adding games and teams to our schedule?

I think there's cause for hope that there can be a season.  I wouldn't bet on it, but it's not dead.  Cases are pretty low in the Big footprint.

I hate the idea of adding Army and Navy but I get Rutgers and Maryland wanting to keep more games close-ish rather than playing more West div teams.

I think a good compromise would be to let them out of a couple west div games each to play Army and Navy.

This isn't as crazy as it might initially seem.  Adding high-end academics might eventually be the best strategy for the BIG if OSU and the SEC continue to go in the other direction.

Even if they are added (which strikes me as silly and also irrelevant since unfortunately I doubt we'll see a season this fall) Rutgers would STILL lose to every B1G team.

Congratulations! The first person to have actually read the proposal !!!  I am always amazed that so many people seem to intentionally avoid understanding the facts of a situation before forming an opinion. I guess that makes it easier to defend their opinion when they can make up their own facts.

Note to those with reading comprehension issues, this is not involving football.

Army and Navy are in the Patriot league for non-football sports.  It's still a bad idea, but it's not a bad idea that causes issues with the meme that the site established.

It always amazes me when people jump in to comment on an article they haven’t even skimmed.  I imagine if you did a survey asking Mgoblog readers how often they clicked on a link before commenting on a post about said link, only a very small number would say that they usually click on the link first.

This is definitely a place where a bit of a summary would be helpful.   The writer focuses on non-revenue sports and explicitly suggests football would not be impacted.

From that perspective, one could see why it makes sense from the perspective of Rutgers and Maryland.   I do think that the writer ignores some of the large challenges to adding another variable to an already uncertain issue.

In light of the rancor that has gripped this board and for which I am not entirely unguilty myself...

Can we all unite just this one time and all say FOH to this absolutely terrible idea?

Don't mess with conferences at all during this. An overlooked factor in potentially having a season is the relationship between institutions, ADs, and the league office.

Trust, communication, and potential consequences from the league are needed in an environment with this much volatility. It can still go terribly awry, but everyone you invite into the thing is a new risk with more unknowns than the current members.

I enjoyed when we played Navy at home in the early 70s - so much fun to pass up a midshipman.

1972 35-7

1973 14-0

1974 52-0

I see the Rutgers logic - they're not liking the travel one bit. But wouldn't it make more sense to lend them back to the Big East for a year or two (or forever) and make an arrangement with the MAC to solve these schedule issues?

I’m sorry.  I apologize.

it’s breathtaking that there are so many stupid people on this board who don’t take 45 seconds to scroll through an article.

We claim to be “Harvard West”.  We act like morons.  Why?
