Ron Johnson Transfers to Rutgers
Another former Michigan football player is staying in the Big Ten.
Defensive lineman Ron Johnson, who graduated from Michigan in May, announced Thursday plans to transfer to Rutgers for the 2019 season.

Good luck to Ronalds Johnson.
You must’ve wished him that when he came here, rice, and wished him well, cuz according to the stories he used to tell me, it worked.... often!!!
It’s too bad he never really got to play because he really loved Michigan and A2. He always had a smile on.
Brandon Peters took a visit to Illinois. It went pretty well and he just may end up there. Purdue was a strong destination at one time, although I think that ship has sailed. MAC or Illinois for Peters now.
He would have immediate eligibility, yes? There's a chance we see BP in October if he goes to the Illini.
That would be pretty cool, I'd love to see him playing well. He's earned a shot, even if it didn't work out at UM.
I would love to see Michigan sack BP a lot. I don't want him injured, just want him on his back a lot. I still think he has a good arm that could cause damage if he were given time to sit in the pocket.
[Insert Risky Business gif]
Any particular reason that Purdue is no longer on the table?
Seemed like a good fit.
How many jersey kids does that make that signed with Michigan only to head back home?
In recent memory just 4. Seems like its been more then that...
- Ron Johnson
- Drew Singleton
- Ahmir Mitchell
- Jabrill Peppers
Was going to point out your error, then decided to tip my cap to your nuanced brilliance
Good for him. Got his Michigan degree and is now heading back home for grad school.
Bit of a contradictory post, OP. Is he transferring to Rutgerz, or staying in the Big Ten?
So Rutgerz can haz nice thingz?
By my count, from the original 2018 roster, among the players who could’ve returned for 2019, but won’t, for various reasons, are the following in alphabetical order:
Chris Evans (academic suspension), Julian Garrett (?), James Hudson (Cincinnati), Ron Johnson (Rutgers), Reuben Jones (West Virginia), Oliver Martin (Iowa), Brandon Peters (?), Brad Robbins (?), O'Maury Samuels (dismissal for off-field actions; ?), Myles Sims (Georgia Tech), Drew Singleton (Rutgers), Aubrey Solomon (Tennessee), Benjamin St-Juste (Minnesota) and Nolan Ulizio (Pitt)
Who else am I missing?
Solomon and Singleton are the head-scratchers for me they both would have been starters this year
They SHOULD HAVE been starters. But I don't think either was going to be for whatever reason.
Brad Robbins is transferring?
According to Touch the Banner's report on June 4, 2019, "Robbins is in the transfer portal and won't return to Michigan". LINK
Thank you. It isn't surprising but I missed it somehow.
The 2017 class is such a perplexing case study on transfers.
A lot of the guys who left would have been in line to either start or fight for a starting spot this year.
Aubrey Solomon - Basically just had to show up.
Drew Singleton - In the fight for a starting role.
Oliver Martin - In the fight for a starting role (also, with the new offense even being the 4th or 5th WR probably means a 20+ catch year).
James Hudson - In the fight for a starting role.
Deron Irving-Bey - Not a lot of depth on the DL, probably plays significant minutes.
Corey Malone-Hatcher - Medical.
O'Maury Samuels - Dismissed.
JaRaymond Hall - Probably not going to see playing time? But still, could have easily found himself as a back-up and playing with an injury.
Benjamin St. Juste - Medical (but headed to Minny!).
At least five of those guys would have played quite a bit next year I would imagine and they all just bailed.
Rutgers you say, thoughts and prayers.
Why? Good for him. Playing D1 football in the big ten. I’m confident that not too many of us on this board can the same.
It's probably better to be on the field then to sit on the bench. Best of luck to him but when Michigan plays Rutgers, I hope our offensive line can pancake him often!
Ron Johnson and Ruben Jones we’re both longtime scholarship athletes who just never were able to crack meaningful playing time. Both seemed to work extremely hard and represent the program and team well. Neither jumped ship right away when their prospects seemed grim. Good teams need players like this. Both walk away with a Michigan degree and an opportunity to continue their graduate studies and see more time on the field. Wish them the best.
For some reason I always thought Ron Johnson and Rueben Jones were the same person. And I don't know who Julian Garrett is.
on purpose?
I hate it when one of our players transfers to one of our rivals
I think you mean Rutger
