Submitted by JC3 on

The Rivals100 for 2015 has been released, and two Michigan commits are both in the top-10(!).

George Campbell- WR (#7)

Damien Harris - RB (#5)

Nice to see some positive recruiting news for the Wolverines.

Rivals 100.\

Edit: Shaun Crawford checks in at #96 overall as well.

Why does it seem like every thread over the past several weeks has to start with such a relentlessly negative comment?  This season didn't go well.  I get it.  That doesn't mean that you have to be negative at every imaginable opportunity, even when the news is good.

As far as I know, there's little/no reason to believe that either of these guys will decommit.  Campbell is very close with Mason Cole, who I think is an early enrollee, and Harris has given no indication that I know of that he's looking around.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Turd. (I should stop this post aftert this sentence) Damien Harris grew up a Michigan fan, he is not decommiting especially when he is already talking early enrollment. George Campbell is extremely close friends with Mason Cole(as someone stated above). Lastly, you can rip on this coaching staff all you want but one thing has been pretty impressive. The lack of decommits from any of the classes. Be happy fergodsake!!!!

A little surprised to see Campbell still be so high up after a seemingly 'just ok' junior year

Also

#28 Sterling Jenkins
#39 Jacques Patrick
#45 Justin Hilliard
#49 Osa Masina (I think we offered him?)
#50 Chuma Edoga
#52 Tim Settle
#74 Jashon Cornell (Still a huge discrepancy on his rankings, righ?)
#80 KLS
#90 Brian Cole

Also, NOTY candidate RayRay McCloud III

But those guys are both so good that you take them and figure it out from there, IMO. And if KLS commits and Cornell doesn't, you already have your backup plan on board, kind of like how they did with Lawrence Marshall and Hand.

Do you rage quit 'murica because ammunitions companies sell guns to both sides? No. You buy stock in those companies because Capitalism!

Now if you switch out "'murica" with Crawford, "ammunitions companies" with OSU, I think "sell guns to both sides" stays the same, and "Capitalism" and "Go Blue" are synonomous at this point anyways. idk. I lost my train of thought.

i hope Crawford still comes to M. Nothing in my mind thinks he won't. If he doesn't best of luck. I rage quit rage quitting.

Looking at the list, there are at least 4 more I'd like to see commit to Michigan:

  1. Cole, Saginaw, ATH, #90.
  2. Hilliard, Cincinnati, LB, #45
  3. Settle, Virginia, DE, #52
  4. Cornell, Minnesota, LB, #74

It is incredible to already have 3 on the list. Were we able to add two of the above, having 5 commitments in the top 100, I don't know how you can do much better than that. Fill in the class with another solid 10 - 15 commitments, and Michigan continues to have top 10 recruiting for 4 straight years.

EDIT:  Was too slow in posting (see above post.) Definitely think Sterling Jenkins is another one to add to the list, especially to keep him away from Ohio.

We won't finish close to a top 10 recruiting class for 2014, so that will break our streak. A lot of people chalk that up to the class being small, but even if you adjust for the size of the group, I think it's clear that the 2014 class is not quite up to par. Much of the earlier enthusiasm was based on the assumption that we would land Hand and came before verbals from several 3- and 2-star prospects.

I agree it would be awesome to end up with 5 from the top 100 in 2015.

I think you're either misinformed or looking at things pessimistically. ESPN has us with the #7 recruiting class, so that's "pretty close" to the top ten. Now you're probably talking about Rivals, which has us at #16 overall, but if you account for the small recruiting class, the best indicator is average star rating; our average star rating is 3.44, which ranks us #12.

Furthermore, there's still the possibility that Michigan gets Malik McDowell, the #40 recruit (IIRC), which would bump up those numbers. I think it's likely that Michigan gets at least one more recruit (Vic Enwere?), so we could very realistically move up. I don't know for sure whether other schools will rise, drop, remain stagnant, etc., but I think it's at least feasible that Michigan moves into the top 10 by February.

So... only 1 State of Michigan player in the top 100 and just barely checking in at #90?  Is Michigan bare in 2015?  I know it isn't exactly a talent rich state, but this seems pretty bad.  Normally there is at least 1 - 5 star or a few pretty close from my recollection, right?

Magnus

Last year Morris and Elmer were the only ones in the top 100, and neither was particularly close to being a 5-star.

In 2012 there weren't any in-state players in the top 100.

In 2011, Lawrence Thomas was #55, Anthony Zettel was #65, DeAnthony Arnett was #84, and Justice Hayes was #85.

So I don't think there's any particularly good trend for the state of Michigan. It's just not an extremely productive state when it comes to elite talent. And if you look at that 2011 class, Zettel has been the best of the bunch while the other three have had pretty forgettable/mediocre careers so far.

That doesn't mean the state is bare in 2015. There's Mikey Weber, Josh Alabi, Kyonta Stallworth, Ray Buford, Jayru Campbell, Tyriq Thompson, Alex Malzone... A couple of those guys are top 250/300 prospects.

these rankings aren't always an accurate measure of talent.

Allen Robinson was a 3-star recruit outta OLSM, blossomed into one of the best WR's in the country & probably a 1st round pick. Kirk Cousins was a 2-star out of MI, etc. Michigan isn't Cali/Texas/FL/Ohio, but I think its a solid 2nd tier type state for talent.

For instance, if you look at this class, I think Brian Cole is only at 90, but dude has some of the most impressive film of any WR to come out of this state in a long time. He probably ends up at MSU, but if we could get him in the slot to go along with Drake & Campbell, not even Borges could fuck that up.

Magnus

I agree it's not a bad state. It's not Delaware or Wyoming. But it's definitely in a second (or third) tier behind Florida, Texas, California, Louisiana, etc.

Cole has basically mentioned no leaders, and things go back and forth from "insiders" on whether he's leaning toward U of M or MSU.

I think there are multiple reasons. I think the lack of spring football and warm weather hurts. I also think the lack of large, population-dense areas hurts; you have Metro Detroit and you have the Grand Rapids area, but population has dropped due to the recession, and it's no longer a booming area. I also just don't think the huntin'-and-fishin' types in rural northern Michigan, the Upper Peninsula, etc. care as much about football.

I've lived in rural and urban areas, and the difference is stark between the hobbies/interests of kids in the two. Football players and athletes in the urban areas tend to be more interested in playing team sports, working out, etc. Football players in the rural areas tend to skip workouts more often in order to fish, hunt, and generally go outdoors. That's not a bad thing in itself, but playing pickup basketball or hitting the gym is going to help you out more than sitting on a boat waiting for a fish to bite. The people in the upper two-thirds of the state are generally just too spread out and too "different" from the football types to be elite athletes.

If you follow Michigan recruiting, you see all kinds of talented kids coming out of Detroit, Grand Rapids, Saginaw, and Lansing...then nothing really until you get up to Traverse City. The U.P. is basically a football talent wasteland. (I'm not trying to insult the people up there or say that they don't have powerhouse football teams, but individually, you don't see studs coming out of Ishpeming, Manistique, Munising, etc.)

not produce any talent? Private/Catholic schools yes, but generally not the public schools. I see Ohio kids come from their suburban districts all the time, not MI. Rochester, Troy, Sterling Hts, Novi, Canton, Farmington, Livonia, etc., these are large districts with good programs that nonetheless rarely put out D1 kids. And what's with Pontiac? Have they put out anyone of note in years?

Magnus

I think those areas put out more FBS-level prospects than you probably realize. If you scan the rosters of Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, etc., you see a lot of those types from suburban public schools. They're typically not elite players, but they are pretty solid talent. I just think Michigan doesn't recruit them extremely often, but they do go after guys from Farmington/Farmington Hills. Tyler Hoover from MSU is a Novi product.

I also think those Catholic schools scoop up a lot of the talent (Detroit Country Day, Novi Catholic Central, Orchard Lake St. Mary's, Birmingham Brother Rice, etc.).

Don't care what they are rated in high school, only care about what they do at Michigan.  In two years after these kids are on the team then we should talk about them.

Forgive me if I can't get excited about recruiting this morning but I want to start drinking Mark Dantonio's milkshake on the field.

That being said these kids look like great athletes and I hope they stay committed to Michigan and win multiple B1G championships here.

This has to be a record for Godwin's Law as applied to mgoblog.  Two posts and two counterposts warrants the go be an MSU Fan card.  I know recruiting is your specialty but come on man.

Is Sills serious about Michigan now that Kiffin is out at USC?
