Rich Rodriguez's Best Recruit/s So Far? What are your thoughts?

Submitted by CaliWolverine78 on

Now entering his 3rd year as HC of UM. Who do you think is the best recruit/s? It was hard but these are my choices:

Craig Roh, Tate Forcier, and Tay Odoms.

Craig is an obvious choice, the kid is a stud and he has a motor smilar to Justin Smith of the 49ers. No matter what is put in his way...he wont be stopped...

Tate Forcier

I know some of you dont agree, but i think a healthy Tate is a key to our success early in 2010. Sure he fizzled out near the end of 2009, but he was hurt. the kid can flat out throw.

Tay Odoms:

This kid is simply elusive, i mean the return against Purdue had me at the edge of my seat. When he is on, he's as good as Slaton was for Rodriguez at WVU. IMO

and lastly, the newest recruit i think that could join this group is Roy Roundtree....

what do you guys think?

I think DG will turn out to be the best recruit long-term, and the "recruiting politics" in his case are important.  With too many big, high-profile, dual-threat QB's turning Michigan down, I think his signing was crucial, especially considering that he is an instate recruit.  On the field, I'm sure he will develop into the best QB on the team.

That being said, I hope he only starts as a junior and senior; it would mean that either Tate, Denard, or both were performing very, very well.  I know that we as football fans are more easily infatuated with freshmen in this era, but it would be great to see the QB position once again become one of stability, with four and five-star recruits having to "wait their turn."

A kid that could open some eyes up this year is Taylor Lewan and I see him being real good on the line in the future as well.

Based on what has been done up to now, Tate is the man for me as best recruit. Based on potential, Taylor, Craig  and Denard. Devin probably is as well. Others possible: What really makes this exciting is the number of true stars we have that could vie for the title of 'best RR recruit'.

So far, RR's recruits have only played as freshmen. It's a fun question to ponder, but we haven't really gotten to see who his best recruit is...chances are many will make this list in two years who nobody would even think about now. That being said, I totally agree with the DG upside. Also keep in mind, that as these guys mature and the team gets better, this list and debate will increase hugely as more high-profile recruits come our way.

I think Martavious Odoms has been Rodriguez's best recruit so far.  He had a rough freshman year with his fumbled punts and such, but he really solidified that slot receiver position that's so important in this offense.  I think other players will end up being better than him and/or have more NFL potential, but he's helped out a great deal on the field.

Based on pure potential, I'd say Gardner, Roh, and Lewan are about tied at the top.  They all have first round NFL draft pick potential, in my opinion.

I was luke-warm on Odoms during his freshman year, but last year he really stepped it up.  Not only with the ball, but I can think of several big plays that happened last year because Odoms put a solid body on someone much bigger.  The two that come to mind are DRob's first TD where he took on a linebacker, and Stonum's kick off return against ND.  From where I was sitting at that game it looked like he was the one that sealed the crease for Stonum to break it open.

I think RichRod has pulled very exceptional recruits considering our recent struggles. It is hard to say which is the "best" because each player plays a different role. I would say some of the biggest recruits are Big Will, JT Turner, Gardner, Cullen, Roh, Forcier, Robinson, Gallon, Stokes, Stonum, Mcguffie. The biggest sleeper is def Patrick Omameh.

I guess it all depends on how you want to look at "best."  Do you mean, who will be the best pro, Who will be the highest draft pick, who fits the system the best...etc.

I am going to judge "best" by who will go highest in the NFL draft since that should mean the most talented.  Which means I am going with....Taylor Lewan: #1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft!

Gardner.   Watch those clips of all his plays at the spring game and remind yourself that it isn't a college freshman fumbling out there, but a high school senior.  Pre-prom.

The Tate/Denard monster is going to win some games the next 2-3 seasons, and then its going to get real fun when DG comes out as a grown man and wins a Heisman or two.

Never been more enthused about my Michigan football obsession.

Please point out where he looks more valuable than Forcier did last year, because it's still incredibly difficult to see where this hype is getting its fuel from. I understand that he will grow out of the really irresponsible play in that game, but I've yet to see anything that shows he will unseat either Tate or Denard.

The dude picked him as the best recruit, so I would say that constitutes being more valuble. Or the winning a Heisman or two comment, that would certainly mean he's more valuable than Tate or Denard. But you're right, I used his post as a platform to the topic of Devin Gardner hype, I'm more interested in the substance of it, less interested in time tables.

I'm thinking Denard.  It was kind of a last minute pickup if I remember right and with his speed and vision, he will make an impact somewhere on the field wherever he plays (Pat White 2.0 please)

Devin has a ton of potential, but I think he will only be a factor for a couple of years, whereas Denard will have made a difference for 4 years.

I was thinking Denard too, but he really hasn't proven anything yet. He seems like he might start for a few years and I really think he could be one of the best playmakers in the country. The Pat White comparison might not be the most accurate in my opinion, to me he seems like more of a Michael Vick with his elite speed and strong but sometimes inaccurate arm.

Patrick Omameh.  He finished last year as a starter and still has many years to improve.  Also, he showed everyone RR has an eye for talent, since he was a two star recruit coming in.

I would go with Michael Shaw, his 1st 2yrs, he was behind sum good talent, so he didnt have to play off top. He had some big plays in the past two yrs, and that was off the bench in a limited role, and now he'll be the one getting the bulk of the carries, getting in rhythm, nd gaining that leadership confidence..... Watch nd see!!!!

Go ahead and neg me, but who are the straight up tards that are negging this guy for having an opinion?  Maybe you disagree with him, but that doesn't mean he is damaging the community by trolling or being an asshole.  Shaw was a highly rated recruit--moreso than everyone's beloved Mcguffie (at least once beloved), so this is not that far-fetched of an opinion.  This could be a breakout year for him.  I don't think so, but it could be.
