I still don't understand how Crean couldn't make it at Georgia. I can get getting forced out at Indiana-- that's a tough place to coach with a lot of unreasonable expectations. But Crean isn't a BAD coach (at least I didn't perceive him as that before this), he typically was able to recruit, and the SEC outside of Kentucky is typically a middling to bad major basketball conference. I just don't get it.

@Wolverine in Exile SEC is a major power for basketball now. Oats and Musselman have brought in big talent. LSU is consistently solid now. Kentucky speaks for itself. Barnes and Pearl were massive upgrades at their schools and recruiting well. Crean isn't an elite coach, but he's definitely better than his results. SEC is much better than it used to be when it was basically Kentucky, Florida and whoever else decided to have a decent season. But it's not so good that he should be going 1-17.

I figured this was coming for the last couple of years.  His teams at UGA have not been good.  I think he lasted as long as he did because Georgia sports fans have been focused on football.

Nonetheless, maybe he can get back to ESPN and provide commentary for games again?  He was really good at that a few years ago.  And by 'really good', I mean excellent.

@Wolverine_In_Exile ....... Georgia does seem like it should make some noise in SEC hoops, but they don't.  Shoot, Jim Herrick was there immediately after he made his run at URI, and won 1 NCAA game in 4 years (before getting fired for because academic fraud was occurring).  GA hasn't won a single NCAA game since then.

As I think about it, I'm pretty sure EVERY SEC school has won an NCAA game since Georgia last won one (2002).  Some of these I knew off the top of my head, some I had to research:

Florida - lost to South Carolina in the Elite 8 in South Carolina's Final 4 year.

Kentucky - obviously

Missouri - won a game in 2013.

South Carolina - made a Final 4 (!) a few years ago

Tennessee - had an Elite 8 in the early 2010s (remember them losing to MSU in Elite 8).

Vanderbilt - won a game in 2012; Elite 8 in 2007 & 2004.

Alabama - Sweet 16 last year.

Arkansas - Elite 8 last year.

Auburn - Recent Final 4.

LSU - won a game before losing to U-M last year (had a Final 4 mid-2000s).

Ole Miss - Beat Wisconsin that one year where Marshall Henderson scored a ton of points.

Mississippi State - won a first round game in 2008 + a couple other years mid-2000s.

Texas A&M - Sweet 16 the year they had that miracle win over Northern Iowa.

I actually thought he might do ok there. Kind of surprising how abjectly terrible their basketball team always is. Clearly they aren't focusing booster money on basketball

I don’t know how good Western KY is at Bball right now, but for some reason I feel he will end up there….maybe it’s just because the Harbaugh connection, or the fact that they were willing to hire Bobby Petrino after his motorcycle fiasco.

Was reading an article about GA’s long running lack of success.  Interesting.

and about longest Power 5 droughts for wins in NCAA tournament , I believe I read that the longest are:

1) Nebraska - infinity

2) Georgia

3) Penn State

Despite what some think, SEC is just as prominent in basketball as they are in football. The teams this year are insanely good. Crean had a mass exodus of players last year. He had only one decent player in Anthony Bennett, then last year everyone was gone. Crean had some issues behind the scenes from what I read. He was over his head at IU. He was over his head at UGA. The dude isn’t that great of a ball coach.
