Reminder: the Michigan coaching search is a DISASTER

Submitted by Dawkins on

On this eve (close enough) of the start of the Harbaugh era, I couldn't help but look back at this heavily-circulated-at-the-time footballscoop article from early December and LOL my ass off:

Amid reports that today could be Brady Hoke’s final day as head coach at Michigan, I reached out this morning to a number of connections in the coaching profession – both NFL and college. The feedback I heard isn’t going to excite many at Michigan; in fact, one source was very blunt, saying “Michigan is struggling to find their next head coach.”

Michigan athletic director Jim Hackett and senior assistant athletic director Mike DeBord have spoken with a number of potential candidates is the what I’m told; and the reception thus far hasn’t been positive. We are told that the Michigan administration was hoping to have largely have their man identified by now and that does not appear to be the case as calls were ongoing yesterday.

Multiple sources I spoke with told me Jim Harbaugh has already told Michigan that he is not a candidate.

Multiple sources we spoke with feel Michigan will ultimately wind up going “outside the family” for their next head coach.

Those anxious December days seem so long ago already. Jim Hackett played his role to perfection and tomorrow we get to see Coach Harbaugh in action in his Michigan coaching uniform for the first time. Can't wait!

We were driving down to visit my sister for Christmas the weekend of the last 49ers game. I was on Twitter and mgoblog while my husband drove. We watched the whole dang 49ers game just to see the post-game presser. On the drive home we bought tickets to the basketball game where it was rumored he would be introduced. Best trip to NC ever. Sigh.

I'm favorably impressed by the high level of play in pro football. Everything else about the National Football League is corporatized and nauseating. Brandon would've fit in perfectly with all those "message shapers." Must protect the shield ... must protect the shield.

I'm sure glad we were able to get Greg Schiano as our head coach. Those reporters couldn't have been more accurate in their coverage of the coaching search. I can see why they are all paid to provide us with such well-researched and knowledgable reports.

This is because Schefter and all the other NFL disciples probably reference the same one or two sources, and it was probably some guy who knows Harbaugh from the NFL, not from his Michigan days.  Of course Harbaugh isn't going to confide in some random guy about his love for Michigan.  He's going to talk to his Michigan buddies about it.  So some random guy who knows Harbaugh tells Schefter et al that Harbaugh "wants to win the Super Bowl more than anything" or you can let your imagination fill in the blank.

I think this article was pulled out of the author's ass. Anyone can cite "sources" without actually having any.  It's not like there's a journalism police that's going to come out and arrest you.

I think they played off this hilarious meme that's been going around since Carr's retirement that "nobody wants the Michigan job" or that "the Michigan job is no longer a premier position."  Really, people think this. And this author thought it so fervently that he just assumed he would turn out to be correct.  As if a school that spends hundreds of millions of dollars upgrading their facilities, sells out the largest stadium in the country, is one of the most watched on TV and practically recruits itself is not a place where top coaches would want to be.

You're absolutely right.  I think that meme became more believable (to dumb people in the media) following Rich Rod's failure. The narrative was that Rich Rod was successful at WVU and now is successful at Zona.  It must be that Michigan itself is the problem (crazy fan base expectations, meddling administrators, etc.)  and therefore no coach wants the job.  SMH

what a cowards way of reporting something that you really have no knowledge of. so after you are proven to be so wrong you can just say "well i just reported what i was told".  what idiots.

Seeing the slow shift from

"There is no way he goes back to the college game"

to

"Well he might be considering it"

to

"Well damn it he signed"

Was the highlight of my holiday season.
