Recruiting: Mike Weber Update
http://michigan.scout.com/2/1399825.html
Just Win baby and things will change!
So is this an update on a player who doesnt have interest in Michigan?
Allrighty then.
We've been recruiting him for a while, and it's kinda news that he's not including Michigan on this list.
I don't see the problem here.
Well, if he's good, and we want him, and he's a local kid, and we need a RB, and he's not including Michigan in his top group, that doesn't strike me as a good thing.
It's always been weird, but I don't even like following anymore.
First we're on the list, then we're off, then we're on, now we're off again.
NO ONE seems to have any real information except when someone gets an offer or who's visiting.
Gone are the days that made more sense when a guy when from 15 to 10 to 5 to 3 to 1 or something like that.
Now it's something different every time a kid is interviewed. Before all of the "experts" could make a Best Guess List...and be fairly accurate. Now? Yea right. You may get 2 guys correct and then you just give a bunch of excuses as to why you weren't correct for the other 18.
Not really. I honestly didnt know we had been recruiting him so I didnt understand the reason for the update. Now I do.
Not edgy - just confused.
EDIT: Where have you been Brown Bear? I havent seen you around much lately.
First of all I dont care if you "buy it" or not its the truth. I didnt know we were recruiting the guy so I thought it was odd we had a thread posted about a dude who was NOT interested in Michigan and I made what I thought was a fairly innocous comment about it. And remember - like you I dont live in Michigan so being from Cass Tech doesnt mean that much to me. I'm far more aware of the Northern Ohio kids we're going after cause they are in my backyard.
Didnt mean to ruffle everyone's feathers.
This is the part that's surprising to people, I think.
First off, your point total, combined with how often I see you comment on posts shows that you're pretty avid about reading/visiting this blog.
And since you pay attention to Michigan recruiting at all, one would think you'd know about the school that has a longstanding tradition of being a pipeline for us - Will Campbell, Delano Hill, Jenkins-Stone, Terry Richardson, Thomas Gordon, Boubacar Cissoko, Edward James Olmos, The Noid, etc. - whether you live in Ohio or Michigan.
And if you hadn't heard about those guys, Cass Tech is also the former school of Ohio State enrollee Damon Webb . And last year, there was a lot made out of the fact that a highly-touted recruit from a major Michigan pipeline was going to OSU instead of Ann Arbor.
I guess we're just surprised, man. That's all.
It's cool, man. I really just wanted to do the list thing with Olmos and the Noid.
Yes mGrow please pay attention to all facets of recruting at all time!!!
Or have a life....that's option 2 which I sincerely hope you reconsider:)
In seriousness, I think Weber recruiting is far from over. Also frankly, we will be fine. I will just say negative recruiting works when the fan base of team says such wonderful things as, "8-4 and Hoke should be fired...unacceptable at Michigan, etc, etc".
I'm not saying we should be satisfied with mediocrity but negative recruiting works because other fan bases let the ennui of our fan base spread like a slow flame across the internet until it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
Running back is one of the few positions where you can take backs of lower Star rating and generate good return on value. I would like Weber or Harris to be here but if they aren't we will find someone interested in Michigan for the tradition, the experience and the love.
I love contrarian years. We are so despondent at the prospects of team, sighting statistical reasoning for the inability of the team, etc. I suspect this team will have a surprisingly effective year. And 2015...watch out!
I am firm believer that adversity makes you appreciate success. WIthout it there is an expectation that excellence is and should be the status quo when there is no guarantee that is ever the case. Accept the today and get excited for tomorrow. And embrace whatever comes and whoever we recruit that commits to the ride.
Mike Weber tells me he has no top 4 and "it's silly" that #Michigan isn't included among his favorites. He'll release a top group soon.

I also asked Mike Weber if #Michigan would be in his top group and he said, "no doubt".

Last I heard he was at least intrigued by the Nuss hire and things had improved with him...(which may still be accurate even if we're not leading the pack).
Comments in the thread over on Scout say the OSU is negatively recruiting against us pretty hard at this point. By no means am I surprised by this but something that Hoke has to be dealing with a lot currently.
I just don't understand how negative recruiting can effect kids the way it does. To me when you negatively recuit, it comes off as desperate and douchy. How kids fall for that BS is beyond me.
All Meyer has to do is compare W/L records and that speaks for itself. Not to mention that our in-state rival won the B1G Championship & the Rose Bowl.
I would be KILLING Michigan with negative recruiting if I was competing with them for guys. I'd give my best sales pitch on the program, and if it came up, I'd just show team records for the last 7 years or so. Maybe even longer. Michigan is mediocre over that span. It's true. And what's to show we're gonna really crawl out of it in a major way? OSU has been significantly better over this span, which is what recruits remember b/c they're like 16 years old. It doesn't surprise me at all. We gotta show well on the field this year and all will be ok. If we don't, we're hosed.
You don't need to bring up our respective records to make this point - obvious things are obvious. We rushed the field in 2011 because our wins against Ohio are non-existant in the SEC era. And a HS kid has no idea that we were an elite program unless his dad or uncle tells him.
Meyer's negative recruiting likely consists of some reference to Hoke's increasingly hot seat. That's a pretty typical recruiting move against a rival and I'm not sure if we should be upset about it.
Urban is probably smooth-as-can be when doing that. Something like this:
"I've known Brady Hoke for a long time and he is a good man. I'm sure he'll do everything he can to turn things around there, etc., etc."
Don't _say_ he's on the hot seat. Get the point across while praising him at the same time. Something like that ...
You hit the nail on the head. That's where it begins and ends. W's and L's. With the exception of 211, the last half a dozen years of Michigan football have not been pretty, to say nothing about our last decade record against OSU.
That can be hard to overcome.
Meyer's recruiting techhiques may be douchey, but he is holding most of the cards at this moment.
We almost lost to Akron and UConn last year. Akron.
This is why we gotta back Hoke no matter what...
We've dominated for so long that all the enemies have a common interest, to knock and keep us down.
I am all for backing BH through the end of this season and allowing him his chance to prove himself. This year BH will have a depth chart full of experienced players that he recuited and has been developing over the course of his t ime here.
If this team comes out and lays an egg again this year (I'm not saying they will nor am I saying I want them too, to be clear) I don't see how backing him at that point will do anything positive for this program. If anything it will make matters worse IMHE because negative recruiting will be that much easier. It will be one more year opponents can point to where UM was irrelevent.
So I may have misunderstood you and perhaps you meant that we need to back BH no matter what right NOW, not that we need to back him no matter what following this season even if it turns out to be another stinker. If that's the case I apologise. But if you (like some others) think we need to stick with BH at the end of the season regardless of how the season plays out, and that doing that will positively impact the program and make it more difficult for other teams to negatively recruit....I have to question your reasoning ability.
I think Webb last year and the comments he made all the way through signing day was a perfect glance into what Urban and staff have been saying about Michigan. It's working so why wouldn't Urban keep it up?
Combine that with the general emo-ness of the fan base and the fact that none of the Cass Tech kids have exactly become stars and it's not hard to see why we'd lose out.
Sorry, but I just can't take it anymore when someone tries to blame a recruiting loss on the fans being too negative. That has got to be the stupidest fucking thing I have ever heard and yet people keep trying to make that argument. I am sorry that you don't like fans being negative, but to think that some recruit made the biggest decision of his life because of random internet posts then we are better off without said recruit.
I'm not exactly arguing that the fan base being negative has lost Michigan a kid, I have often done the exact same thing you did of chewing out a poster who talks about nagativity having effects outside of the message board and for the most part agree with your position. I am also negative on the team and could care less about the fans being negative as I share the feeling.
That said, you cannot deny that the entire fan base being down on the team has to have some kind of effect on the instate kids as all they hear is negativity even from people who normally are positive about the team. If all the guy hears from friends, other parents, etc. is "Why would you go there? They don't develop talent like they do at MSU and they don't have the profile of OSU." All of Urban's slimy bullshit becomes much more powerful. I'm sorry you want to shut your eyes and claim thisdoesn't have an effect, but I don't see how it can't for in-state kids.
You keep saying that you're finished with sports until September and I keep hoping that you'll follow through with that.
He listed it as a possible factor, not the determining factor. That very well could be true, especially for a local kid like Weber.
can I plz haz more Jourdan Lewis?
OSU isn't/can't be the only one that's negatively recruiting against us these days. The blood is in the water and you don't even have to try that hard to be negative. Just state some facts and plant the seeds of doubt in an impressionable kid's mind.
Absolutely right. You don't have to be real negative to negatively recruit when a coach is twisting in the wind. It's one reason we seriously ought to consider giving Hoke an extension before the season, even if it turns out we end up eating the contract later.
Uncertainty on who will be the coach kills recruiting much faster than losses. The lack of certainty as to who our coach would be in 2010 ultimately doomed that recruiting class and if we're not careful we'll do the same thing to Hoke. I'd rather pay off a few extra years of his contract than ensure he cant recruit effectively right now.
Sadly I think it does. Look at Hand's recruitment - I believe it took an 11th hour assurance that the staff wasnt getting smoked to keep him in the fold.

OSU insiders have assumed that LJ Scott would go to MSU, which would send Weber to Michigan and Harris to OSU. Weber may or may not be a backup for OSU, but I think they're focused more on Harris and Scott.
by Harris saying he is a lifetime M fan, I don't get it. If that is the case, how could OSU even be considered?
based on who you were a fan of growing up, not what I would recommend.
Lol we can't even make the top 4/5 for priority kids in our own state anymore? This is rock bottom.
Rock bottom would be the Horror II occuring, Carlos.

If you questioned most fans about their expectations for 2008 I think many would have said we were going to stink. We were completely changing offensive philosophies and the roster was a complete mess.
Expectations from that year onward increased, if only incrementally after season 1 and so on. When BH took over many people thought the same thing. He was taking over a roster of someone elses players of whom were all developed by someone else. People were willing to make that same allowance for him that they made for RR.
Then a funny tihng happened. He rode that team to an 11-2 record with a BCS win. That probably gave most fans some unrealistic expectations to a degree, but most people would think that if we had a good coach, given time to implement his system and get his players into their senior years we should be back to elite status.
Fast forward to 2014 and we are entering season 4 of the coach and each year the team has seemed to take a step back despite the roster looking better each year. People have argued that it is mainly due to inexperience and this year will tell the tale.
My overall point is, 2008 was expected and therefore some of the sting was taken out of it, especially with the Wiscy win. We didn't really fall that far below expectations so 3-9 wasn't looked at as so horrible, more the cost of making the change. Seeing what has transpired since our 11-2 season when so much more was expected has caused many to feel like this is rock bottom, though as much as I wish it was, I am quite fearful that isn't the case.
There has to be something below that rock, and we would certainly discover it if the Horror II occurred.
Fortunately there is no chance of that happening. Our AD would never be so stupid as to schedule that game a second time, with nothing to gain and everything to lose.
Wait . . . what?
We aren't even close to rock bottom. Hell, most of us have seen pretty close to rock bottom. Losing to Toledo at home is pretty close. Not having a 17 yr old in Michigan want to go to Michigan is not.
I should have clarified- i meant in terms of recruiting.
It was an overdramatic post, I know we've been through far worse, I was in the student section watching Threet throw that 99 yard pick six in the Toledo loss.
Cut me some slack...
