Random on Twitter: Fred Jackson to return

Submitted by Helloheisman on
Random on Twitter is saying that Fred Jackson to return. Anyone else hearing this? Below is the context of tweet... @Ty_Fenwick: 2016 RB recruit Kentrail Moran tells me he's been told by a current player on the team that RBs coach Fred Jackson is staying at #Michigan.

Hope to god it is an honorary position for recruiting in the state of michigan. How in the world has he kept his job, again?!?!

I won't believe this until it is from a reliable source. I can't believe he wouldn't contact Wheatley before rubbing Fred Jackson's magic lamp.

I get that this board is snarky and the snarky thing to do is get upset about Freddy coming back, but can anyway actually give me their opinion of why, instead of just agreeing with the  mob opinion? He's a great recruiter and the players love him. The backs played well last year.

You lost me at the backs played well. Did you not read the UFRs? See the replays? Our backs haven't played really well in quite a while. I believe that the players love him. But he isn't coaching them very well at this point.

"... and I thought the backs played pretty well" is an opinion. UFR is not (or at least, it's much less of an opinion than any other player-wise gameplay analysis out there).

Objectifying football analysis is like, one of the main points of this blog. And according to that analysis the runningbacks did not have a very good year, and haven't for many years.

By definition, then, wouldn't that make 'they played well' your opinion, and not fact? Just checking. Also, since you might be new here, there's a lot of good analysis posted here throughout the season, and none of it seemed to agree with your statement of opinion, confused with fact, by people whose knowledge I trust a whole more than yours.

Is Fred really Milton from office space? Maybe we haven't paid him in years, but he still just shows up...

I know this is bordering on chiche, but with Harbaughs record at picking assistants, I'd say if he asks Fred Jackson to stay, he probably thinks the guy brings something great to the table.

I can see Fred Jackson retiring. But he has been here a long time, back to Moeller, and Carr, and through everything He started in 1992. Fred is 64 years old, and is unlikely to go elsewhere. If there is a way Harbaugh could retain him one year, with Wheatley at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised. That would be a gracious way to thank Fred, and to move on. You young whippersnappers don't get this yet, but there is such a thing as giving elder statesment respect and dignity, rather than cutting them loose out of expediency. The hard thing is the NCAA numbers (maximum coaching staff.) If there is a way to finesse that, I expect it to happen.

Fred Jackson has done enough for the University that I would like to see something like this which allows him to be around even if not in a coaching capacity. People question how he has survived for so long here, and I have to believe it is because coaches believe he provides value to the team (something which he has demonstrated in various ways). It would be great to see him serve in some capacity, even if it is not on the field.

If true, Fred Jackson seems to have been "Grandfathered" in through 3 different coaching changes. I don't think he has ever had to interview with new coaches as we are hearing with some other coaches like Manning. Seems strange that it's just a given these days?

I think we all have a soft spot for Fred as he seems to retain the only consistent employment on the staff but we have to cut the cord sometime, right? Although he has been an above-average recruiter and has coached some great RBs in his time so I'd have no problem with him coaching from a wheelchair.

This is a must. Nobody was impressed by the results of the strength staff...I saw recent pics of Drake Harris shirtless on twitter...he is flat out frail and skinny looking...I know high schoolers bulkier than him. No wonder he's hurt all he time.
