That was my thought as well. No excuse for throwing anything, a punch or a slap. I am not sure we will ever know what was said leading up to that moment.
However, having said that, it looked like Juwan was trying to shake hands without making eye contact and move on. He was grabbed by the arm and stopped by Gard, who then said something that was obviously upsetting.

Agreed. When you’re the leader of young men, you have to be the bigger more mature man. When your head coach isn’t the most level headed person on the court after an ugly loss, that’s a serious problem. Wisconsin and their usual stupid shit is unacceptable, but not surprising.

Basically Gard called a timeout with Wisconsin up 16 points with 15 secs left. Howard took exception and told his guys to intentionally foul. Game ended, Howard got in the back of the hand shake, when he got to Gard, he pulled his mask down and gave him some unknown words. Gard took exception, got in his face. Ugliness ensued. Howard ended up open hand hitting one of the assistants in the side of the head. Not sure who he was trying to go for. Players go into it. It was ugly and frankly, really unacceptable from a head coach.

The clip very clearly shows Howard attempting to walk past but he also very obviously had some words while looking straight ahead.
