PSU is #38

Penn State is at #38 in total offense and #38 in total defense heading into this weekend.  UM is at #29 in total offense and #5 in total defense, so we hold the advantage on both sides of the ball.

Drilling down a bit, we see that Penn State's defense is #5 in rushing defense to our #7, but #102 in passing yards allowed to our #11.

So, we have both been very good against the run and we both bring an elite running back.  Freshman Nicholas Singleton will be tough as he has averaged 7.35 ypc.

Also, PSU has managed turnovers well at a TO margin of +6 through 5 games while we're at +4 through 6.

My keys to the game:

  • UM stopping the run first and forcing old man Sean Clifford to make plays.
  • They are likely to be stout against the run and try to force JJ to make plays as well.  We must be able to pass on them given their performance so far this year.
  • Win the TO margin.

I feel like the last 2 years, the 2min offense has actually been pretty effective? I feel like 2015-2020 it was always a clown show and we knew that if we got points it was because of D or ST. But the last two years, I feel like they pretty consistently use that time to have a fairly effective drive that nabs 3 points, if not 7.

I kinda got carried away and looked into this. in the last 20 games (so, since the start of 2021) we've had 17 drives that started in the last 3 mins of the first half or finished with less than a minute in the half, we've scored 7 FGs and 3 TDs on 17 drives, NOT including a 1 play TD against NIU last year. This DOES include a fumble at the goal line against NW last year, and a long missed FG against UConn this year. On average we've drove ~46 yards on these drives (TD drives of 70, 52, and 78 are not dragging down the average), and used ~83% of the available clock (or 5/6, so a drive that starts with 3 mins ends with 30 seconds, one that starts with 1 ends with 10 seconds). One time, we left enough clock for Graham Mertz to score a TD against us afterwards.

So nearly 3 in 5 drives to end the half have ended with points, with about 2:1 FG:TD, and one more ending with a RZ turnover, and one more ending with a 1 play TD. I'm not sure how that compares but it feels pretty good.

SIS - I don't think you'll see many in the media present "negative" statistics about Franklin.  Which, as we all know, is significantly different from how many in the media choose to represent - or analyze Harbaugh / Michigan.

There might be one slide about PSU under Franklin against Top 10 competition - but, at the same time - they will highlight "great" wins - like defeating the Bucks a number of years ago in State College.

Oh, I just realized this.  Penn State hasn't been to the CFP, have they?

Looking forward to the game on Saturday.  Go Blue!

Gadget - that season, 2016, was a great example (which I reference) of how the CFP Selection Committee and teams identified are a beauty contest.   In that season, PSU not only won the B1G conference - but also defeated OSU head of head in State College.

But, in their infinite wisdom, the CFP Selection Committee determined that results on the field didn't matter.  A Conference Championship didn't matter.   Just an example of how ridiculous this entire CFP, and the BCS which preceded it, is.

Franklin has recruited well - but, hasn't necessarily developed and delivered on the field - to the level - of his recruiting.

It should be a good game this weekend.  Go Blue!

Results on the field didn't matter?  No, the committee determined that ALL the results on the field DID matter, not just one game.  Hence they said, this PSU team lost to Pitt and lost by 39 (!!!) to Michigan so no, they aren't a top 4 team.  And they were right.

Just like they were right about MSU NOT being a top 4 team despite "beating" Michigan last year.

Well, PSU had two losses, and one was a 49-10 destruction.  OSU had one loss.  PSU won their head-to-head matchup, but it was a coinflip game and in Happy Valley.    The committee's job was to look at their overall bodies of work, and you could make the case that OSU's was better.
