PSU is #38
Penn State is at #38 in total offense and #38 in total defense heading into this weekend. UM is at #29 in total offense and #5 in total defense, so we hold the advantage on both sides of the ball.
Drilling down a bit, we see that Penn State's defense is #5 in rushing defense to our #7, but #102 in passing yards allowed to our #11.
So, we have both been very good against the run and we both bring an elite running back. Freshman Nicholas Singleton will be tough as he has averaged 7.35 ypc.
Also, PSU has managed turnovers well at a TO margin of +6 through 5 games while we're at +4 through 6.
My keys to the game:
- UM stopping the run first and forcing old man Sean Clifford to make plays.
- They are likely to be stout against the run and try to force JJ to make plays as well. We must be able to pass on them given their performance so far this year.
- Win the TO margin.

In the more accurate stats of F+ :
We are #8 on offense and #7 on defense. #4 overall
PSU #37 offense but #6 defense. #12 overall

The BIG question. . . .
Will Jim Harbaugh's vaunted 5 minute Two Minute Offense be enough to overcome James Franklin's world famous 6.5 minute Two Minute Offense?
Network advertisers are salivating at the opportunities.
October 11th, 2022 at 11:09 AM ^
No, not 6, I said 7, 7 minute abs. You won't get your heart going, not even a mouse on a wheel. 7 is the number.

October 11th, 2022 at 12:15 PM ^
I feel like the last 2 years, the 2min offense has actually been pretty effective? I feel like 2015-2020 it was always a clown show and we knew that if we got points it was because of D or ST. But the last two years, I feel like they pretty consistently use that time to have a fairly effective drive that nabs 3 points, if not 7.
October 11th, 2022 at 6:03 PM ^
I kinda got carried away and looked into this. in the last 20 games (so, since the start of 2021) we've had 17 drives that started in the last 3 mins of the first half or finished with less than a minute in the half, we've scored 7 FGs and 3 TDs on 17 drives, NOT including a 1 play TD against NIU last year. This DOES include a fumble at the goal line against NW last year, and a long missed FG against UConn this year. On average we've drove ~46 yards on these drives (TD drives of 70, 52, and 78 are not dragging down the average), and used ~83% of the available clock (or 5/6, so a drive that starts with 3 mins ends with 30 seconds, one that starts with 1 ends with 10 seconds). One time, we left enough clock for Graham Mertz to score a TD against us afterwards.
So nearly 3 in 5 drives to end the half have ended with points, with about 2:1 FG:TD, and one more ending with a RZ turnover, and one more ending with a 1 play TD. I'm not sure how that compares but it feels pretty good.

My keys to the game:
- pass out of pistol
- pass following motion
- pass
October 11th, 2022 at 9:11 AM ^
Agree. Basically, we need to change tendencies from what we’ve shown on film so far.
October 11th, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
According to Sam, he asked Borges to chart that and against IN it was even pass/run on motion and 62% run vs. IA. Joel's observation does not seem to hold up under scrutiny.
October 11th, 2022 at 9:36 AM ^
Yep. I heard that segment as well. Why people jump to conclusions is beyond me. Someone says something, it is negative about UM. So, it must be true.
October 11th, 2022 at 10:26 AM ^
Is the pistol thing true though? I think that’s the much more obvious one.

Probably not, but both Michigan and PSU’s schedule has been awful so far.

October 11th, 2022 at 12:03 PM ^
Fresno State is a solid program and Uconn just beat them!
October 11th, 2022 at 9:17 AM ^
No they don't.
Fancy stats like SP+ has UM 4th overall, 8th in offense, 9th in defense and 3rd in special teams. PSU is 14th overall with their D ranked 6th, but where the real difference is in their offense which is only ranked 46th.
October 11th, 2022 at 11:56 AM ^
No. So they're useless.
October 11th, 2022 at 1:15 PM ^
After 6 games, I am not sure the first 3 cupcakes are that worse than what PSU played. Auburn is not that good.

James Franklin road curse, let’s go!
Has he beaten top ten teams on the road?
October 11th, 2022 at 9:29 AM ^
SIS - I don't think you'll see many in the media present "negative" statistics about Franklin. Which, as we all know, is significantly different from how many in the media choose to represent - or analyze Harbaugh / Michigan.
There might be one slide about PSU under Franklin against Top 10 competition - but, at the same time - they will highlight "great" wins - like defeating the Bucks a number of years ago in State College.
Oh, I just realized this. Penn State hasn't been to the CFP, have they?
Looking forward to the game on Saturday. Go Blue!
October 11th, 2022 at 9:36 AM ^
Penn State won the Big Ten in 2016 but didn't go to CFP. I think that PSU team might have found a way to put up 1 point against Clemson.
October 11th, 2022 at 11:22 AM ^
That team had a 39 point loss to UM, and had two losses. No they did not deserve to go to the CFP. But I get that you are taking a shot at OSU.
October 11th, 2022 at 11:27 AM ^
Gadget - that season, 2016, was a great example (which I reference) of how the CFP Selection Committee and teams identified are a beauty contest. In that season, PSU not only won the B1G conference - but also defeated OSU head of head in State College.
But, in their infinite wisdom, the CFP Selection Committee determined that results on the field didn't matter. A Conference Championship didn't matter. Just an example of how ridiculous this entire CFP, and the BCS which preceded it, is.
Franklin has recruited well - but, hasn't necessarily developed and delivered on the field - to the level - of his recruiting.
It should be a good game this weekend. Go Blue!
October 11th, 2022 at 12:07 PM ^
Results on the field didn't matter? No, the committee determined that ALL the results on the field DID matter, not just one game. Hence they said, this PSU team lost to Pitt and lost by 39 (!!!) to Michigan so no, they aren't a top 4 team. And they were right.
Just like they were right about MSU NOT being a top 4 team despite "beating" Michigan last year.
October 11th, 2022 at 12:09 PM ^
Well, PSU had two losses, and one was a 49-10 destruction. OSU had one loss. PSU won their head-to-head matchup, but it was a coinflip game and in Happy Valley. The committee's job was to look at their overall bodies of work, and you could make the case that OSU's was better.
October 11th, 2022 at 12:29 PM ^
I mean I would say they decided results on the field DID matter, as Penn state had two (2) losses and Ohio only had one (1). Penn st lost to an average Pitt team and lost to UM by 39(!) points. Ohio’s only loss was on a flukey blocked FG and had just beaten 3rd ranked UM
October 11th, 2022 at 11:30 AM ^
That would take a 1-point safety, which wasn't going to happen lol. Far easier to score 3 than 1.
October 11th, 2022 at 9:39 AM ^
Nothing new about media. They have to create clicks. Look at fans commenting here. Many comments on this board is all about finding ways to get some negativity about UM and coaching. It is light this year compared to last year.
October 11th, 2022 at 8:58 AM ^
My key to the game: I think that we will likely win the game if we score more points than Penn State.
October 11th, 2022 at 9:04 AM ^
I appreciate the "likely" in this sentence, a clear acknowledgment of the endless ability of BiG officials and the league office to screw UM over.

Short video where Big Ten coaches share their most overrated statistic.
