Potential for more staff changes post Bowl Game? Questions on DB coaches

Submitted by AZBlue on

I saw a Harbaugh quote last week (same day as the Corley crystal ballz to OSU came out)  in regard to Coach Partridge's future on the staff.  Essentially it was "Great Coach, Great Man etc. .........We will see how things look after the NFL hiring cycle."

I took this to mean one of two things:

  1. Stop asking me about this!
  2. He thinks one of his D staff may move to the pro-ranks for 2016-2017

If it is actualy option 2, this could be a Harbaugh decision to make room for Partridge or a desire of the coach himself.  (Didn't one of the BH or RR coaching staff "move up" to the NFL to free a spot?)

My thought is this would have to be one of the 2 current DB coaches given Brown's past experience coaching DBs and the fact that Mittison isn't going anywhere until retirement.

I really haven't heard much regarding either Zordich or Jackson aside from the occasional MgoBlue interview so I was wondering if any of the "insiders" on the blog could answer the following about them:

  • Which of the 2 is more likely to recieve an NFL offer? (I would assume Jackson but my momma always told me.....)
  • Is one getting better reviews than the from the current team?
  • Recruiting -- I don't recall being either mentioned prominently by current recruits.  Would one be a larger loss than the other in this aspect?
  • Which do you think would be a bigger loss if in fact one were to leave the staff?

Could just be a whole lot about nothing, but something about the quote made me think otherwise.

I have no doubt Jackson is looking for a DC gig; he's been coaching for over 10 years as a position coach. Question is does he think staying on with Harbaugh is the best way to achieve that. Personally I would rather hang onto Jackson than Zordich I think if they were going to lose a DB coach. Brown has coached both LBs and DBs I believe.

I don't think the OL was anything to write home about this year.  I mean, better than last year, but still not good.  I refuse to believe that all of our RB's are blind and slow and we had zero run game towards the end of the season.

Now look at the passing game stats this year.  Once Rudock got his feet wet he was lighting it up through the air.  He only needs something like 250 yards against Florida to move up to #2 in single season passing yards at Michigan.

Remember after the spring game when we were all shitting ourselves because we didn't have any receivers?  Fisch coached them too.

Yeah ideally, UM keeps both.  And I think they do keep both with Fisch getting a big raise.  Different opinion, but I just think that while Fisch's work with the WR is undeniable, good WR coaches are easier to find.  And Harbaugh I think the main reason Rudock got better considering the history of all QBs under Harbaugh.  Meanwhile Drevno was Harbaugh's OL and OC when he did a quick re-build of San Diego into a championship team, as well as the OL coach during the last two years of Harbaugh's Stanford teams and at the 49ers.  He's just got too many feathers in his cap when coaching OL to let him go despite UM's OL not taking the complete step forward many were hoping for/expecting.

Harbaugh for that long.  They must work really well together.  It just seems odd to me that Michigan is the first time he's ever been an OC.  I would have thought Fisch would have gotten the title just based on experience (Miami/NFL).

Although I honestly think that the offense was run by committee this year, and Harbaugh himself does get most of the credit for Rudock.

I think the thing is that Darboah and Chesson (plus Jake Butt) offered a bit more potential to be reliable than the OL really did at that point. But I think bringing back both those two would be essential, as I really liked some of the improvements that Drevno got out of the OL.

He got a huge promotion to get the UM job.  Previously he was, yes, at the NFL level, but he was an ASSISTANT position coach.  You're not going to get a Michigan level DC job based on being an assistant DB coach at the NFL.  You're not even going to get a MAC level DC job with that being the top item on your resume.

Jackson hasn't done nearly enough to prove he's a DC yet, IMO.

He's basically been a journeyman position coach since like 2003.  I can understand why he wants a shot at being a DC.  But I agree, UM isn't the place to be handed that.  If he wants to take a DC job at a lower level school, that's fine, but after only one year at UM getting the DC spot?  Seems a little premature; may have to prove himself a bit more.  Especially when UM had a shot a extremely well respected defensive mind and seasoned coaching veteran like Brown.

I wonder how out of the question this really is?

"Sorry I couldn't make it to the BBQ at The Big House, I was in Canton being inducted into the pro football hall of fame"

God that would be awesome.....

Mattison is at an age where retirement is a legit possibility annually. Have we any confirmation he's coming back next season? Bowl game DC could be his swan song.

(Just throwing out a hypothetical; don't want to see this happen nor think it's a likely outcome.)

Partridge was a LB at Lafayette College and is a defensive-minded coach. He is a great recruiter. Convinced Jabrill in his soph year to leave Don Bosco (national HS power at the time) for Paramus. Huge get and turned Paramus into the NJ catholic league champ and displaced Don Bosco as the region's national HS power team.

on staff with a strong background in DL coaching.  So Partridge isn't a replacement for him imo.

I personally hope we consider Jerry Montgomery when GMat retires.  Must be a decent coach and one heck of a recruiter.  Not sure he would come in for less than a Co-DC title though, despite the M ties.

I think if Mattison does want to retire soon, the earliest time he would is after next season. He's got a lot of veteran talent on that line, many of whom he recruited and has coached personally. I think he will want to see their careers play out before moving on.

To keep Partridge as a coach wouldn't one of the current coaches have to leave?  Or is there the chance they move him back to the administrative job post bowl.

It would basically give a guy who Harbaugh himself has called a great coach with a long future a taste for the real thing and then send him back. Something tells me his time to be a full time coach is near. Harbaugh knows he's assembled some of the best minds in coaching and their potential isn't limited to their current staffing positions. Hell, I feel I barely know Don Brown at all besides a few MGoBlog posts and through social media. Harbaugh will get it figured out after the bowl game when the dust settles. Let's get that 10th win first.

I see this again and again, but keep wondering where it is coming from.  When we lost Durkin, there was a lot of speculation that perhpas Jackson would be in line for the DC position, but how did that start?

Seems to me that it might be one of those rumors that has been repeated so much, that it is now accepted as fact.  Or did I miss something substantive related to Jackson's wishes?

Serious question.

Well stated...I think its a case of people feeling the need to throw out a current staff member as the new DC..and then when someone else is named, people change the narrative to that he must be upset now so he may leave. You are right - it seems to be stated everywhere here and Im guessing the source people would cite is other posters on this same site with nothing behind it.

I think it's somethings that have leaked out of Schembechler but also a lot of the public rationalizing which coach would leaving make the most sense for.

Jackson just turned in a GREAT year with JD as an AA and one of the best secondaries in the nation, improving on last year's unit even with an average-at-best 2nd corner (not a knock on Clark, Strib, or Jabrill when he was outside - they'll all be good cover guys eventually they're just average and improving right now). He also came from the NFL to basically the same role in college. He's young, a good coach, and doesn't want to stagnate here.

So yeah, I think part of it is just repetition, like one of those internet "facts" that gets retweeted/shared enough that teenagers and facebook moms believe it to be true just from seeing it so much. But I also know that he asked to be interviewed for the DC gig and has expressed interest to move up in his role. So it is probably his actual sentiments blown out of proportion by being discussed so much.

It would suck to lose any coach, especially late into the off-season like this, but if we're going to lose a coach a secondary one would be the least harmful. Even if Jackson left, we'd still have Brown and Zordich so I think our secondary would be fine.

However if someone does leave, I'm not the biggest fan of Partridge getting the job. He's been great in his capacity so far and I know he wants to coach, but I'd rather get a proven LB coach than hire a guy with no prior D1 coaching experience. Unless our LBs play like All-Americans vs Florida I'd rather any replacement be an outside hire.

I will have to defer to Harbaugh on this one...  If Harbaugh thinks Partridge can handle it and has only been praising him, I am more than comfortable with him being a position coach.

FreddieMercuryHayes

December 29th, 2015 at 3:42 PM ^

Gotta trush Harbaugh's eye for talent on this one if he does promote him full time to a position coach.  But it's not a crazy track either.  Before he was a HC at Paramus, he was an assistant coach at The Citadel and another small school (his alma mater I believe which slips my mind and I don't feel like looking up).  So it's not unheard of to take the next step as a D-1 position coach then.

Ideally I'd like Partridge to stay on, but just as a recruiting coordinator player development guy, not sure he's qualified to be a coach yet. But if that's whatnot takes to keep him on, then so be it. He is external important for landing several big time targets this class and next. If we lose him it would suck.

If Jackson does end up leaving, I worry about how that will put our position with Hill and Long. This would directly impact their recruitment and it seems that both of them are close to or on NSD decisions
