Post your OC possibilities

Submitted by PrincetonBlue on

Just post possibilities to replace Borges.  No discussion: just post names and where they come from.  If you are feeling extra generous, you can lay out the whole resume too.

He didn't seem to have much problems developing players at USC when he was TE coach, WR coach, or OC.  From 2001 - 2006 he had a hand in developing offensive players.  In that time there were 31 draft picks, 14 being offensive players, 9 of which were drafted in the 1st or 2nd round.  Breaking it down a little further:

2001 - Kiffin is TE Coach - (6 - 6) - 3 players drafted, all later rounds.
2002 - Kiffin is WR Coach - (11-2)  - 2 players drafted in later rounds.
2003 - Kiffin is WR Coach - (12-1)  - 5 players drafted - 1 receiver.
2004 - Kiffin is WR Coach - (11-0 *2 vacated wins)  - 4 players drafted - 1 receiver.
2005 - Kiffin is OC/recruiting coordinator - (0-1 *12 wins vacated)  - 6 players drafted - 1 receiver in the 1st round.  #1 recruiting class.
2006 - Kiffin is OC/recruiting coordinator - (11-2)  -11 players drafted - 8 offensive players.  #1 recruiting class.

Seems like they had some pretty good player development with 17 players drafted his last two years when he was the OC/recruiting coordinator.  Also brought in some pretty solid recruits.

You could make the same claim re: player development about anyone on staff during the Carroll years.  They had a ton of 5* kids and a ton of success, so that naturally equals a lot of players drafted.  He is a good recruiter and did play a part in bringing in that talent, but I know that the last two years at USC (2012 & 2013) he completely lost the team.  I had friends on the team and they didn't just dislike the guy, they hated him and it wasn't isolated to them.  The whole team hated his guts.  Kiffen would be a terrible decision for Michigan right now.

We've been told that things had to go less than optimal the last few years because we were moving toward something that would be better, but that required dramatic changes.  Is that just getting chucked out the window?

If we're running an up-tempo, spread-to-run next year with Gardner on his way out after forcing Denard to line up under center a good chunk of the time and run a west coast passing attack I'm going to be a little ill.

Well, changes aren't going to be made after an 11-2 season, so that wasn't happening.

Last year Michigan could hide behind the "Denard was hurt!!!" excuse, so that wasn't happening.

But this year, while youth certainly came into play, Michigan just sunk too low too many times on offense to justify keeping things in place.

I think its a great move as long as they get the right guy. Its similar to what would have happened had Michigan brought in Casteel in 2011 rather than blowing everything up.

A lot of our offensive struggles were predictable outcomes of inexperience; another portion were outcomes of poor tactical and strategic decisions--many, I'd assume, coming from Borges, though some probably also coming from Hoke. Plus there's bad fortune--make that 2pt conversion against Ohio, or one of those doomed FG tries against PSU, and how do perceptions change?

Thus I'd say Borges is fairly blamed for certain things and being scapegoated for others.

How much of that is truly what he plans/planned on doing and how much of that is saying what boosters wanted to hear after the RR experiment? Just about everyone outside of this blog was begging for the next Lloyd Carr. I personally think Hoke is willing to go with whatever wins. He's said before he's not an offense-minded guy and stays away from tinkering with offensive playcalling as much as possible.

Judging by your tone, I think I'm with you and in the minority and thinking this move may have been done hasily or for wrong reasons.  I'm not necessairly mad that Borges was fired but I'm questioning the decision a bit.  The team wasn't very good last year, not just Al Borges.

Josh McDaniels has taken the job.  He withdrew his name from consideration as head coach of the Browns earlier today.  OBVIOUSLY that's because he's taking the Michigan head coaching gig - a step up from gig with Patriots and 10 steps up from Browns head coaching gig.  OBVIOUSLY.

Hecklinski is a well-regarded guy in the coaching fraternity, and our WRs have been pretty good under his coaching.  I have no idea how he'd do as OC, and I'd prefer an experienced playcaller, but I wouldn't write him off.  I would imagine a WR coach is probably going to favor a pretty open offense.

will be part of the Michigan staff in 2014, if not the OC.  He may split OC responsibilities (running game OC v. passing game OC), but my prediction is that Mr. Wheatley will be part of the Michigan football staff.

Is it weird that I would interested to see what Nick Sheridan can do as a coach? He's an pass game c/QB coach at USF. Michigan certainly won't have the balls to hire a younger guy (god forbid) though, so he's out.
