Players on the field with the same number
You likely saw the Memphis punt return Saturday, when Mississippi State failed to 'down' the ball. Did you also notice two #4 players on the field for Memphis? Besides the punt returner, there is also a #4 on the line between the 45-50 yard line when the play starts. It went unnoticed by the refs and the TD counted.
If you missed it, check it out here: https://youtu.be/FFu66fvcqkE
Obviously, Michigan got called for it on Saturday and NIU scored on the very next drive. It made me wonder how often refs miss when this happens. Anyway, the NCAA made a rule last year that limits the amount of players with the same jersey number to two. Not sure this new amendment to the rule is having any effect.

No he definitely died. On the moon. Like I did. Reading another post about numbers.

The other half is acting like you didn't know all along.

No doubt words of experience coming from a buckeye fan.

it's probably just popping up bc of expanded rosters due to the covid year. in the past i recall guys popping on a nameless jersey with a different number for a punt. i imagine it's something refs keep track of every play, otherwise ineligible man downfield would never be called

Wow. A response that actually adds something to the conversation other than snark or aimless chatter.
Are you sure you’re REALLY an MGoBlogger?

They should just switch to hexadecimal. Problem solved.
September 20th, 2021 at 5:37 PM ^
d00d I love this solution. +1 for thinking outside the hex!

Or switch to Mexican soccer league numbers. For example:

How was this not ruled down? 1st guy knocks it back from end zone - 2nd guy slides and seems to "down" it.
The ball then rests on the turf and THEN the Memphis guy swooped it up.
Just because no whistle? That's on the refs.
September 20th, 2021 at 5:21 PM ^
Good rule of thumb..... punt team member should always pick the ball up and hand it to the official.
September 20th, 2021 at 5:25 PM ^
True but the back judge throwing his bean bag and flapping his arms was sufficient cause for the punting team to relax a bit.
This play swung the game and should have been reviewed.

September 20th, 2021 at 5:29 PM ^
Touching the ball doesn't automatically down it. It has to be handed to ref or held in place until the whistle.
September 20th, 2021 at 5:39 PM ^
He dropped the bean bag which should indicate placement of a downed ball.
The ref even approaches slowly WITH his hands in the air signaling a clock stoppage (and change of possession). (11 second mark)
This is TOTALLY on the refs. MSU (Not THAT MSU) got hosed.

ALWAYS PICK THE BALL UP AND HAND IT TO THE OFFICIAL.
September 20th, 2021 at 7:22 PM ^
Incorrectly. The official who signaled stoppage was wrong. By rule the ball was still live and able to be returned by Memphis. The SEC even released a statement saying as much. Though the ref signaling stoppage (though he was wrong to do so) was supposed to be acknowledged and Memphis ball at the spot.
September 20th, 2021 at 7:22 PM ^
Dropping the bean bag down not indicate a downed ball. It indicates the location of a change of possession. You see it on every fumble, interception and kick/punt.

not post worthy.
September 20th, 2021 at 6:04 PM ^
I hadn't heard about that rule. At one point he had at least three 3's on the roster when Rashan was here
September 20th, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
No one is getting Rashan Gary and Wilton Speight confused
September 20th, 2021 at 7:24 PM ^
And they probably weren't together on the punt return team.
September 20th, 2021 at 7:24 PM ^
There were actually 4: Gary, Speight, Nordin and one of the punters.
September 20th, 2021 at 7:30 PM ^
Weren’t all the kickers the same number?
September 20th, 2021 at 6:28 PM ^
It would be so much more entertaining if the NCAA did not allow duplicate numbers and instead allowed players to wear triple-digit uniform numbers.
September 20th, 2021 at 9:20 PM ^
Michigan had two #14's on one of the kick returns against Western that went unnoticed. I was surprised it didn't get called then.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:34 AM ^
Seriously, isn't this always going to be a potential problem when you have more than 100 guys on the roster? Either allow a few to exceed 100, mix in a letter ("85A") or do like meteorologists do for hurricanes and start using Greek letters.
I'd love it. 'Tackle made by rho on the ballcarrier epsilon."
September 21st, 2021 at 10:25 AM ^
I'd like to see numbers 00 to 09. That adds ten more and eases the problem.
September 21st, 2021 at 5:20 PM ^
Thats going to get really messed up when 9 makes a play while 09 is on the field. Verbally you would probably call them both 9. And if you have faith people would call them out correctly then you should probably have faith coaches wouldnt send out 2 number 1s.
