Penn State beats Northwestern 59-32 and Basketball Open Thread
Penn State just wrapped up an incredible, high-paced game of the century (/s) in Evanston, beating Northwestern 59-32 (yikes!) Also, Iowa plays Michigan State tonight.
Possibly. But this game is begging to argue with you.

The only good thing about that game was that it passed Michigan's 2008 record of lowest score in a Big Ten Tournament game (34 vs Wisconsin)
Man, thats like the white guy class C high school basketball scores I used to see back in my day
Holy shit. I don't remember that game.
No one does.
We're B1G champs. We should fear no one in this league.
Go Herky Hawkeye - I want to see more delicious tears from Izzo.
We aren't invincible so I'm all for hoping for favorable matchups
Well, I don't think the BTT really matters that much. (I kind of expect us to lose in it anyway because three games in three days will be tough on a predominantly jump-shooting team.) But Wisconsin is the only team I don't want to play. They were the only team to really exploit our post defense, and they don't turn it over. Anyone else, I don't care.
Exactly. While it would be nice to win the Big Ten tournament, we won the conference, which is more important. Depending on the game Saturday versus Indiana, we're likely a three seed, which is awesome. Winning the Big Ten tournament could give them a two seed, but it's no guarantee.
Yeah, I'd much rather have Nebraska/OSU be the 4/5 game. I think there's about zero chance either of those teams can keep up with us away from Lincoln. Iowa's defense is terrible, but our offense is to some extent defense independent so it's more important that they can score.

Thats a great girl's highschool game!
Northwestern's little stretch of non-suckiness in January is looking like some crazy Bermuda Triangle juju now. How did this awful team win five games (including at Wisconsin, Indiana and Minnesota)? Before and after that streak they looked horrible.
Go Iowa Awesome!
Is 21 seconds the fastest a team has ever committed 2 turnovers to start a game?
Iowa hasn't won at State since 1993? That is nuts.
This is some ugly, ugly basketball. Would be very frustrating to watch if a fan of either team. Thankfully we don't have to wory about that.
So, Northwestern was 10-43 from the field, including 3-22 from beyond the arc - calculations aside, that's basically enough bricks to build a replica of Northwestern University in the event Hedley Lamarr and his hired bad guys should attempt to take over Evanston. In all seriousness, it amounts to an "effective" field goal percentage of 26.75%. Far and away, Northwestern had a better free throw rate - nearly 50% - but they made only 43% of them. Wow.
Refs missed a pretty obvious travel there
To be fair they also missed 4-5 fouls
MSU girls...WOOF
Byrd has a Shane Battier skull, with about 1% of his skill and intelligence.
At the time I thought "I hope you get starter minutes in that game, because you suck." A stat line of five minutes and two personal fouls = payback, apparently. Leaving the bench area in that situation was a dopey move. I like it when Sparties live up to stereotypes.
Marble is doing a nice Stauskas impression tonight. He is feeling it.
Anyone see what happened with the court storming? And by that I mean the kid that ran onto the court.
I just saw that on ESPN. What the hell was he thinking?
I'm surprised he didn't get clocked by one of the players. Maybe if they saw him running towards his coach full speed, and not just when he was in his face.
playing really weird right now. Like they're injured of something. Iowa at the half, 41-39, Izzone sleeping.
Yeah, never mind that they've lost four home games this year (and went to OT in two others). Their homecourt advantage has sucked this year.
Breslin sounds like a library. I love it.
The a suspected rapist (or accessory) is the greatest humanitarian alive thing annoys me more.
It's pathetic, they're all fully healthy. Payne has had plenty of time to condition, Dawson is perfectly fine, and even Appling and Izzo both admittied that Appling is 100% so no reason to sit him, it's just all mental for him. His never being able to see his shot go into the net is not an injury.
Really hoping Iowa beats MSU and then OSU beats MSU on Sunday.
is as sweet as a Sparty tailspin.
It's amazing how much unwarrented respect Izzo gets about his injuries. Yes his guys were injured but you have to deal with it. ESPN is still giving them excuses and they're all back to being healthy besides Appling.
Goaltend.
Who is keeping track of how many times it is brought up that State is not at 100, and all the inuries the've had all season.
love the refs calling these handchecks
My GOD, Vitale. He's now drooling over sleazy John Calipari and how he will become a Hall of Fame Coach.
That's almost as bad as Dakich's "Ohio State deserves strength of schedule points for beating Bryant, Vermont and Ohio U," comment during the Illinois game.
Dakich's point, I think, was more that at least Ohio State scheduled the good small schools and that's worth something. God knows it's good for gaming RPI.
