we won't be hiring a DC from outside the staff before the bowl (if at all). I think we likely matched the position Durkin offered and Michigan > Maryland in both money and job prestige. Take all of that as pure speculation and opinion, btw.

Greg Jackson has a better shot at being named DC than Mattison from what I've read on Scout. Mattison will likely be the bowl DC.

wants to be DC again. I really don't think he does and I know he wouldn't be asked to do it if he doesn't want to. He's happy with DL & recruiting until he retires, IMO. Any inside DC would be Jackson and that's kind of common knowledge by now.

Love it. It might not be long term but it might be seen as a real step for him personally. We have an open slot for the bowl and it is a wise way to fill it.

My favored Baseless Speculation is that this means the coaches Harbaugh wants to interview/hire are still coaching in the NFL and they won't be available to coach in the bowl

Has it ever been the case where a new hire coaches the team in the bowl game? Seems to me that schools typically promote from within for the sake of the bowl game and then move forward with the new coach after the bowl game, regardless of their hiring date.

You design a whole offense around your QB, since that will give you the best chance at efficiency. Not to mention, this was a QB that Jim wanted. So he saw something he knew he COULD design an offense around at least for a year.

You can't design your whole defense around undeveloped linebackers. Certainly not ones you didn't recruit, train or ask for. And even if you could, why would you when they'll be gone in a year? It doesn't make a defense more efficient. It'd probably make it worse.
