OTish: Georgia Recruiting

Submitted by FauxMo on

UGA has lost three recruits/commits since Richt's firing, most recently a 4* QB (no, not Eason, who appears to be staying for now), but a kid named Bailey Hockman with an impressive offer sheet (and fantastic hair).

Also, Smart met with Nauta and his dad this weekend to try and save that situation.

It will be interesting to see this play out, but having their class fall apart a little cannot hurt with Nauta. Nope, that would hurt Nauta bit...

but I bet Steve does what Steve wants to do...That may be his lucky shirt because he seems to be wearing that one at every game he comes to. I always wear the same shirts, re-tie my skates in btwn the second and 3rd periods.only if we are down by one goal. I won't touch them if we are winning. The reason is because in a must-win game my skates had a lace coming free between the second and third, I obviously tied it right went out and scored twice to win it but wait this wasn't my idea we were down a goal agian going into the third and my team mate pulled on my lace and made it loose and I had to re-tie it. He told me that after that game we won that I was crazy not to. So it actually became "a thing"superstition is a powerful thing with some guys usually team mates... Even though it has failed me in the past I still do it. I just can't stop.

I would love to have Nauta in the class. I would think he would see what Harbaugh has done with TE's, along with what Jake Butt did this year, and take a chance on us.

I get the feeling Nauta will follow Chris Clark's lead.  No need to do so when you have a great TE path here at UM.

FWIW, the QB they lost is in the 2017 class and Nauta is in the 2016 class.  Without knowing much about the situation, I'd guess that Eason's status matters more to Nauta than the 2017 QB's status.  He probably knows Eason better from camps and whatever.

Again, at this point if Nuata isn't going to go to the school with a 1st/2nd team AA at your position and a coach known for getting those guys to the NFL, there are factors beyond pure football.  And that's fine; it sounds like he wants to stay closer to home and likes Georgia.  But at this point, he's stuck with them through a lot, and I'd be surprised if he flipped at the end.

I think he's just playing the wait and see game.  You're right in that he's giving Georgia every shot, he's probably waiting to see how the coaching staff fills out and how much they prioritize him.  He's obviously interested in Georgia the school but I think the coaching change has given Michigan a window.

He has numerous opportunities to say he wasn't interested in UGa anymore and yet he keeps them at the top of his list despite the HC leaving, a clear history of not using TEs in their offense, and strong interest from lots of other power programs with better pedigrees for his position.  I never said it would be a flip, but the fact everyone remains bewildered why he keeps talking about Georgia as one of his leaders makes it clear his interest remains high.

He's not coming to UM.  Seems like he's just been looking for any reason to commit to Georgia, rather then look at other schools to commit to.  Best of luck, some people just love a certain school from the beginning.  Most on this board would commit to UM if they could go back in time and be a highly recruited athlete.  I can totally see why some would want to do that.  Many others look for the best fit for them.

Clark was committed to UNC, then Michigan, then chose to go to UCLA only to then want to leave before the second game.  He then said he'd transfer to 'Cuse but then his offer was rescinded and now he is going to Pitt.  Does anyone know why Syracuse took back their scholarship offer?  Granted this kid seems confused beyond all belief but I don't think it's revoking an offer bad.  Anway, I hope he watches Michigan pump out NFL level TEs and think to himself, what could have been.  I think he needed Michigan a lot more than Michigan needed him.

Decides to drag this out much longer then I'm sure his heart is in Georgia no matter who the coach is. But if he wants to go to the NFL in 3+ years as a high pick then Michigan is the place. Butt has made a name for himself (no pun intended) in less then 6 months. He would have 2-3 years to build himself up.

but outside of Ebola in Athens I think he wants to be there.  If he was interested with a coaching staff that didn't use a TE, I don't see how this hire changes anything on that end.  Again, I'd love to be wrong, but...

I think if Nauta was coming here, he probably would've by now.

Just a hunch, and I'd love to be wrong, but I think at this point he's just looking for any excuse NOT to go to UGa, and he's not finding it.

Heard on Atlanta radio today that Smart is looking to fire the top recruiter for the Dawgs. They apparently butted heads on the recruiting trail one time too many. Going to see some more attrition from the UGA classes before it's over.

I'm not sure I 100% buy the "I want to stay home in Georgia" logic. The kid goes to high school at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. If he was that easily homesick, why would he volunteer to leave the state for at least a few years of high school? Is he in the dorms there or is one/both of his parents living down there temporarily? I suppose if a parent was with him it could clarify the situation. Maybe he's close to his parent and that parent is unwilling to move to Michigan for the kid? Or the parent has said "I'll do Florida for a few years but after that it's back home to Georgia"? Anybody know the exact situation? Because from where I sit a kid willing to go out of state to a private high school should also be willing to leave Georgia for college ball too.
