OTish - Bears keeping Eberflus

Submitted by MacMarauder on January 10th, 2024 at 11:04 AM

Per ESPN the Bears are keeping Eberflus, this is a good thing for us Michigan / Lions fans. If Harbaugh leaves for the NFL I'd like to wish him well and going to the Bears would make that difficult.

This certainly helps. The Bears are a mess, but they have some talent and more draft capital. Would be hard to say "no".

Other spots for Jim/other top coaches including: Mike Vrabel, Ben Johnson, Ryan Day(!!)

Tennessee: looks like a huge project with no QB and Henry likely leaving. I would guess Jim would say no.

Carolina: Total dumpster fire. Jim would probably say no.

New England (Maybe): One would think Vrabel would be coach No. 1 here.

Washington: An okay spot, I guess.

Las Vegas: Interesting decision they have with Pierce who I feel has earned the gig.

San Diego: This one scares me.

Atlanta: Some interesting offensive weapons, but offensive QB play.

Chicago wouldn't have been a threat since their GM is the former B1G commish and Harbaugh doesn't get along with him

The biggest threat is probably Washington.  They have the #2 pick so he could get the QB he wants and it's close to his brother in Baltimore.  The whole family could live in the same area.

Self-proclaimed Jim Fan Colin Cowherd thinks the Commanders job is the one to keep an eye on. Josh Harris will want to make a big splash as a new owner. The appeal for Jim is that it keeps him out of the AFC where he won't have to be consistently competing against John (which Jim has openly says he dislikes), but it will allow Jack and Jackie to move to the DMV and be able to have an even closer family proximity in between Baltimore and DC.

I think ultimately there's a lot of "Cowherd" in this theory... but we all know how much family means to Jim and this could be a deceptively intriguing plus for him.  Ultimately though I think the overwhelming deciding factor (as it was for the Minnesota decision, as it was in San Francisco) is what is the Owner relationship, what is the GM relationship?  If he doesn't feel comfortable with that, he won't relive the madness of the SF lesson. Everything else takes a backseat to that.

To me, it's either Washington, LA Chargers or back to Michigan unless a team in the playoffs moves on from its coach.

I think the Raiders stick with Pierce but even if they don't I am not sure this is an appealing job.  Going against Herbert and Mahomes at least 4x a year for the duration of your tenure doesn't sound like much fun, especially when the QB spot is a huge question mark.

Panthers job is a joke.

The Titans look like they're headed for a total rebuild and there no guarantees Levis pans out.

I guess the Falcons could be a dark-horse.  The division sucks and there is some good talent on this team and if you could get the QB spot figured out this team could be a contender quickly.

I think the Pats will try to trade the hoodie so that would swap out an opening but this doesn't look appealing for the same reason the Raiders job doesn't: poor roster talent, no QB, two good to great QB's in the division.

LA gives Harbaugh the best chance to win within 2 years, Washington probably the best chance within 5.  There is no way he takes over a team (Panthers) that is going to be an extremely difficult rebuild or something close to it.

No coach in their right mind would go to the Panthers right now but that is the ONLY job that I would see out of play.  Then again Tepper and Harbaugh together would be hilarious battle of wills. Next dude going there is going to be a very inexperienced guy who is willing to get chopped in half a year or a guy with a lot of tread but say give me the guaranteed 5 year big bucks.

Tepper treats the NFL like English Premier Soccer - he sacks a coach every 7 months.

I actually agree with the new-ish sentiment that Jim may prefer Washington to San Diego if he goes back to The NFL. He'd be close to his brother so the parents can near both, Jim prefers NFC as long as John is AFC (said when he took the SF job), 2nd overall pick for a QB or capital, most money to spend, etc.

I think Vrabel gets a job quick but I wonder if NE just wants to move on from the Belichick era and tree. I think if Day wants a NFL job he begs for NE for obvious reasons.

Michigan is going to be a major fulcrum for a lot of jobs if Jim goes because if Jim goes you lose Minter at the very least. If MacDonald gets a HC job you likely lose Minter regardless. If both happen you have a Harbaugh bidding war for Minter so just assume Minter is gone unless Jim stays AND Macdonald doesn't get a HC gig.

Then we have CFB jobs. I think the NC win finally pushes some guys to start their HC or coordinator coaching careers and which of them are at Michigan? I think it's obvious that Moore is the HC in waiting. Jim stays or goes, it seems he's next in line. Let us play that out and say Jim leaves. Moore gets promoted the same day or next day, who follows Jim? Of those that don't or aren't offered, which get offers at other programs? Jay, Hart, Clink, etc.

In short, I think Michigan goes into 2024 with a largely brand new staff whether Jim leaves or not. Staying keeps most around but if he leaves you likely promote one to OC and the other of Jay/Hart get offers and leave. If Minter goes, you can promote Clink or maybe see who the next guy in that Ravens lineage is. Not sure. Herbert! If Jim goes does he take him with him? I don't see anyone following Jim but Minter, Jay and Herbert if anyone at all. Most feel like college guys other than Minter. I don't think the others would get asked or want to follow.

But we're National Champs so I'm not even gonna worry! Back to The NFL and I think Chicago made the right call, Ben Johnson will probably move on to San Diego if they're an option. They seem the most ready to run his style. I don't see Glenn getting a HC job this season. I do think Macdonald will but will be a fallback candidate when a team whiffed on their first few candidates. I'd bet Jim goes and that's probably a 4-team race between SD, Wash, Vegas and NE. Carolina owner is too volatile.

I also feel like one or two more jobs will open up soon. Even if just due to a coach walking away for a bit. I think Pittsburgh and Tomlin is probable. If Detroit spanks LA, McVay and ownership may want to start over. I think any candidates would be smart to keep their personal wishlists open for a bit.

Moore did well holding fort, for sure. but who knows how much it's scripted.... although it can be said Moore has earned it,  I thought Jay might actually be the better head coach. He's coached every position and can recruit out of the park and is his dads right hand man so knows first hand what a head coach needs to do.

Jim was willing to go 12 months ago to a Vikings team in salary cap hell, an aging defense, a RB who was falling apart, and aging Kirk Cousins last year without amazing draft capital as a middle of the pack team.  So those who think he is only going to go for Herbert or Commanders or a team with a plethora of draft picks and everything else is beneath him - nah.

If he wants to leave, any of those jobs are going to be in play.

Wasn’t the Vikings 2 years ago? I do agree that people may be overblowing the need for a star QB to attract JH. This is a guy who had success in SF with Alex Smith and here with Cade. (What’s more likely, winning a Super Bowl with Kirk Cousins or the B1G with Cade? Not sure.) He may value OL and DL talent over QB.

Living in the Chicago area - this doesn't surprise me.

And - it also wouldn't surprise me if the Bears pick Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the draft.   FWIW - I think Williams is a talented young man - but, he's not Mahomes.

Still won't be a shortage of suitors for Harbaugh. Even removing the Bears from the equation, the Chargers and the Raiders are still out there. Even if the Raiders keep Antonio Pierce (which is what it sounds like the players want, understandably), the Chargers have always been the #1 suitor and have made it no secret that they want Harbaugh.

Its all going to depend on what kind of control LA is willing to give him. We all know money won't be a deciding factor. Harbaugh has said as much, and his actions in giving his bonus money back to AD employees who had to take pay cuts in 2020 indicate that even further. But if LA's owner just hands over the keys to let him do whatever he wants, that may be all he needs to make the move.

Its odd, because for as many reasons as there are for Harbaugh to go to the NFL (wants a Super Bowl, tired of the NCAA/B1G nonsense), there are plenty of reasons to stay. It seemed to surface quite a bit towards the end of his SF tenure, but I wonder how well he meshes with and/or eventually wears on grown adults as opposed to 18-22 year old kids who only have to deal with his quirkiness for 3-4 years. Unless he goes and wins a Super Bowl, is he essentially on a 3-5 year timer with an NFL organization before he effectively wears out his welcome and everyone in the building is tired of his antics?

What are these antics?  The guy is a winner and he believes in a positive culture.  Is it easier for College kids who have never done anything in their lives to buy into that?  Probably.  If he goes to the NFL, he’ll be on a 3-5 year timer because every coach in the NFL is on a 3-5 year timer.  That’s the most amount of time you have in the NFL to win big, and that is if you’re lucky.

That is why he should stay.  He has said many many times that the goal of his life was to play as long as he could and then coach as long as he could and then die.  That can happen if he stays.  That doesn’t happen in the NFL.  You can’t out-happy, happy.  He knows that.  I hope stays, and that he is “feeling the love” because it’s never been stronger.

Chargers are a mess at the ownership level. Harbaugh knows that per Todd Anson.

Raiders don’t have much money nor a QB.  That is a team in need of a complete rebuild.

Commanders make the most sense. Lots of cap space and a high draft pick.

What matters to me is who UM hires to replace Harbaugh if he should leave. I don’t think they can go with Moore. The key element of this year’s team(Harbaugh) would be gone. Trusting an inexperienced coach to continue what Harbaugh started is a huge risk that the program need not take nor can afford to.

There are better options out there.

I truly hope that Santa, Warde, the regents, and greater alumni community truly go all out to convince Harbaugh to stay.

This was not about winning it all one year then moving on (or even getting a few over osu) - this has to be about long term legacy and sustained success.  If it all falls apart shortly after he leaves...

There are better options out there.

Who exactly? Not sure I see anyone out there that would come that I want.

And why isn't Moore the right choice?

He's been great here and has in-game HC experience in some of our biggest games this year. Who better to keep what Harbaugh has built than one of his own assistants?

IF Harbaugh leaves, I'd want Moore to be our next coach. I'd be skeptical of anyone else out there that could come in, keep the staff mostly intact and continue to build upon what Harbaugh has established.

SalvatoreQuattro

Assuming that he can sustain it when he has no track record whatsoever in running a team is nit of logical. Moore handled gameday fine, but Harbaugh was there throughout the week.

I am deeply skeptical that Moore can sustain what Harbaugh, a coach with a proven track record of success, can continue what Harbaugh built. Being an assistant architect  is not the same as being the architect.

Kalen DeBoer has won everywhere he has been. He has proven himself to be a winner and to create a positive culture like we currently see in Ann Arbor.

No matter who replaces Harbaugh the culture will change because Harbaugh is no longer there. Keeping Moore doesn’t mean you keep the same culture. It will be different.

Michigan football is a $100 million a year business. Trusting it in the hands of an inexperienced coach is dubious.

My Titans fan friend is certain Jim is coming to save them. I told him if he thinks he's choosing a team with mediocre talent and assets and history over LA or UM he's gonna be bummed.
