OT: Would Auriemma be a top-tier men's coach

Submitted by Chicken22 on

Geno Auriemma is arguaby the best coach in women's basketball history. Do you guys think he could have the same success in MBB? I think he would be a great MBB coach, my only concern for him would be recruiting.

I think UConn's championship last year moved Auriemma to 9 championships. No idea how many conference titles and how many total years coached for Auriemma compared to Summit. You could also argue the difficulty level of their respective time periods. During Summit's heyday most of the talent was concentrated on fewer teams so the elite eight through championship were probably a little tougher. Today I think there is more talent overall but it is dispersed amongst more teams so the overall road to get there is harder. The win% during his era is what would push me to say Auriemma may be the better of the two but it's like picking between two triple crown winners, they are both amazing.

Good question... A large part of his success has to do with recruiting the best women b-ball players in the country. How that would translate over to men's b-ball recruiting is the question. Also, what job is he getting on the men's side? If he's coaching at Nebraska I think he wouldn't do much, however if he coaches Kentucky I'd think he would be successful.

For years (decades), there have been a small handful of good womens teams.  So, the best talent would naturally want to go to the best teams.  Pat Summitt selected the right players for years and dominated.  Geno is doing that now.  There is not much talent left over for the second teir teams to challenge year in and year out.

You see this with a larger number of mens teams picking from a larger pool of talent, so there is more balance at the top.  But the same eight teams always seam to be good.  If Geno was the mens coach at UCONN, he may have won a couple national championships, but not near as many as he has now.

The same success? No, he would not have wone 10 National Championshipls coaching men's basketball?

I guess I could see him winning one championship. It's hard to say. The level of competition is so different.  I don't see him being any more sucessful than Boeheim (1) or Calhoun (3).

Guys like this that get top to tier recruiting classes every year are hard to evaluate as coaches because of the extreme influx of talent they recruit every year.

Hoke was a pretty good recruiter, but not like Calipari.  Calipari recruits like Saban.

Hoke was also definitely a worse coach.  Calipari may not be as good a coach as he is a recruiter, but he's not actually bad at it or anything.  He's taken three different programs to the Final Four and two of them (UMass and Memphis) weren't exactly bluebloods.

This idea is a crock of shit.  Calipari is one of the better defensive coaches in the country, manages rosters and time well.  His teams don't tend to be turnover prone, run offenses that suit the strenghts of a given roster, etc. He didn't take umass to a final four because of overwhelming talent.  An example of a great recruiter bad coach is Roy Williams at UNC.

Also anyone claiming to know the answer to this question on either side is full of it.  Auriemma is like the Wooden of women's basketball, its a much smaller field of teams who care and there is less talent overall making it easier to have a higher percentage on any one team alowing them to overwhelm the vast majority of the teams.  So he wouldn't have the same success in the men's game just like wooden wouldn't have the same success he did.  Who knows how we would recruit.

Self important isnt the right word to use for either of these coaches. Whats next is belichek self important? Pop? Every other long tenured and tough head coach? SMH.

Love Belichek and Pop. Not sure what longevity has to do with being a douche. But you can get upset and defend Duke's coach all you want.

and Coach K are pretty damn high on the all-time douchieness list, too.

But I agree with you, Gino is still about as big a douchebag as I've ever seen .  So much so that I would love to see Muffet McGraw and the ND women finally knock them off----and I am not one to often resort to rooting for the Irish in ANY sport.

He is the second best active coach in all of college basketball, but coaching mens college basketball and coaching womens college basketball is completely different. Different level of play obviously, different schemes and techniques, treat the players different, and a bunch more. It would take too long to adjust at his age.
