OT: Would Auriemma be a top-tier men's coach
Geno Auriemma is arguaby the best coach in women's basketball history. Do you guys think he could have the same success in MBB? I think he would be a great MBB coach, my only concern for him would be recruiting.

Pat Summit hasn't been coaching them recently either

That's kinda what I was thinking too. I think you could put those 2 at the top and argue, and there's a large drop to the next level.

Auriema has 20 Conference Championships and 10 National Championships

I agree. UConn has the greatest dynasty of all time in womens basketball

For years (decades), there have been a small handful of good womens teams. So, the best talent would naturally want to go to the best teams. Pat Summitt selected the right players for years and dominated. Geno is doing that now. There is not much talent left over for the second teir teams to challenge year in and year out.
You see this with a larger number of mens teams picking from a larger pool of talent, so there is more balance at the top. But the same eight teams always seam to be good. If Geno was the mens coach at UCONN, he may have won a couple national championships, but not near as many as he has now.

The same success? No, he would not have wone 10 National Championshipls coaching men's basketball?
I guess I could see him winning one championship. It's hard to say. The level of competition is so different. I don't see him being any more sucessful than Boeheim (1) or Calhoun (3).

Calipari is a good example here IMO. He's able to recruit top talent, but not coach them up very well. He's a product of recruiting.
February 22nd, 2016 at 4:41 PM ^
Brady Hoke was very similar (I know he coaches a different sport)
February 22nd, 2016 at 4:51 PM ^
The problem here, the other guys win with their high level of talent. Brady wasn't able to do that. If Cal or Geno had "normal" recruiting classes they wouldn't do much. But they get top classes year in and year out and that's how they win.
February 22nd, 2016 at 5:04 PM ^
Hoke was a pretty good recruiter, but not like Calipari. Calipari recruits like Saban.
Hoke was also definitely a worse coach. Calipari may not be as good a coach as he is a recruiter, but he's not actually bad at it or anything. He's taken three different programs to the Final Four and two of them (UMass and Memphis) weren't exactly bluebloods.
February 22nd, 2016 at 6:08 PM ^
The top CFB classes are usually grouped pretty closely together. Calipari is working with an advantage in talent that Saban can only dream about. Auriemma has a big advantage over even Calipari, since his good players tend to stick around for four years.

HARBAUGH.
Give him time.
February 22nd, 2016 at 7:27 PM ^
if there were one written on recruiting compared ot guys like Saban, Meyer, coach K, coach Cal. Those guys get top 5 classes every year!
February 22nd, 2016 at 4:55 PM ^
This idea is a crock of shit. Calipari is one of the better defensive coaches in the country, manages rosters and time well. His teams don't tend to be turnover prone, run offenses that suit the strenghts of a given roster, etc. He didn't take umass to a final four because of overwhelming talent. An example of a great recruiter bad coach is Roy Williams at UNC.
Also anyone claiming to know the answer to this question on either side is full of it. Auriemma is like the Wooden of women's basketball, its a much smaller field of teams who care and there is less talent overall making it easier to have a higher percentage on any one team alowing them to overwhelm the vast majority of the teams. So he wouldn't have the same success in the men's game just like wooden wouldn't have the same success he did. Who knows how we would recruit.

So, you're saying that you're full of it?
Don't be so hard on yourself.

supreme talent wins out most of the time no matter the age. Fab 5 ring a bell?

You mean the team that got out-classed by senior laden, Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley led Duke in the finals?
February 23rd, 2016 at 9:05 AM ^
'92 Duke was one of the best teams of all time. That's not necessarily a strong counterpoint.

Dude is world class douchebag. If there's a more self-important basketball coach out there I'd like to know who he is.

Maybe Jim Calhoun. It was funny from the outside watching those two snipe at one another over the years.
Not that Aureiemma is not a douche - you're correct in labeling him as such.
February 22nd, 2016 at 4:33 PM ^
and Coach K are pretty damn high on the all-time douchieness list, too.
But I agree with you, Gino is still about as big a douchebag as I've ever seen . So much so that I would love to see Muffet McGraw and the ND women finally knock them off----and I am not one to often resort to rooting for the Irish in ANY sport.
