OT: Wings at Blackhawks (EDIT: Datsyuk scores game winner in OT)
January 8th, 2012 at 10:07 PM ^
The wings first goal was a missed penalty where they caught the retaliation to give the wings a 5 on 3 (and goal). the hawks had a goal taken away and then didnt convert the penalty shot.
That said, it's been a good game. Slightly chippy on both sides. I've enjoyed it, I don't think either team had a distinct advantage going into OT
We (hawks) have REALLY missed Sharp though
EDIT: WOW, even more garbage in OT. Franzen is BLATANTLY HOLDING Montador and then tackles him and then Datsyuk scores. Garbage officiating. They missed a too-many-men on the wings too.

Wings got the shaft when they were in Chicago a week or 2 ago, but I agree that was definatley too many men on the ice.
January 8th, 2012 at 10:14 PM ^
Is that before or after the punch thrown by Montador on Franzen. Face it, it was bad defense by Chicago they waited too long to pressure Datsyuk in the corner and he put the goal in.

Also the penalty shot was the correct call so you can't bitch about that.
January 8th, 2012 at 10:21 PM ^
It's a january game, I'm not that pissed/whatever. And I didn't think you could overturn the call that lead to the penalty shot. So you're correct there. But Franzen engaged Montador in the corner and held him while Datsyuk got the puck. Then in front of the net they engaged again. The wings were Chippier than "usual" in my memory tonight. It was a good aggressive game. I doubt that Scott won't be in the line up next time we play.

That Franzen engaged him in front of the net, seemed more like they were both fighting for position and both fell on each other. Playoffs I am sure that would have been a call against us, seems to always go against us in may and June.
January 8th, 2012 at 10:27 PM ^
The front of the net stuff was more legit. Before they got there Franzen held him though. It was subtle, I'm not even surprised that the refs missed it. Franzen had one of Montador's hands and trapped Montador away from the net. The wings got the puck and moved it, they disengaged, then went to the front of the net. Shit happens, refs are human. Were it may or June I'd be livid

I'm not sure how any unbiased hockey fan could look at that last goal and say Franzen was the culprit. Did you not notice Montador's stick BETWEEN FRANZEN'S LEGS for a good 30 seconds of action? And that Montador wrapped his arm around Franzen's leg and tackled him? Not really sure how that's Franzen's fault....
I'll give you the too-many-men thing, but those are missed all the time. The officiating was not as awful as you think...Chicago still had 5 PPs to Detroit's 2, AND a penalty shot. They missed a couple, but I mean, it's not the refs fault that Datsyuk had a day and a half to score from the side at the end.

Additionally, there was a cross check to Franzen, I believe but could be incorrect about Franzen recieving it, earlier in the third period which was the exact same penatly they called against Stuart in the reffing debacle that was the game two weeks ago, which saw a 6 to 1 penalty advantage for Chicago and a ridiculous penalty shot. Officiating in the NHL has become incredibly frustrating these last couple years. That being said, I find it tough to say that the officiating was terribly biased against Chicago when they had a 5 to 2 advantage. The penalty shot was valid, but what is the rule on too many men on the ice, since the Wing appeared to take himself out of the play and barely touched the Chicago player.

Pavel; good.

Franzen tackling a defenseman didn't hurt.
/bitter hawks fan

Franzen was being held the whole time and was taken down in front. The Hawk defender went down trying to tackle Franzen
January 8th, 2012 at 10:22 PM ^
He was held in the corner, then they locked up again in front. Hopefully we'll see you guys again in April. Haven't had a series in a while. It'd be a fun one for sure.
January 8th, 2012 at 11:48 PM ^
It sucks that you guys got the short end of it tonight, but there were plenty of bad calls for both teams.

I think the crew had a rough night all night all round. I asked my wings-friend fan this, but is this a "good" NHL crew? You'd think the NHL would put their better crews on the National Broadcasts like the NFL does...

I have a feeling this has more to do with my age than anything else, but I feel that Chicago is more of a rivalry than Toronto.

I know it used to be real hatred between Detroit and Toronto, but since I have been watch hockey (about 2003, I was 15 or so) Detroit and Chicago have beenbigger rivals. This also has to do with the fact that we met Toronto once a year.

Regardless I treasure any matchup with any original 6 team. Anyways good win tonight, think that puts us in a tie for first with Chicago.

Are you old enough to remember their best rivalry of this generation, the Colorado Avalanche and the Turtle?

I'm Pavel Datsyuk. I put puck in net. I score goal. (Russian accent)

SO. With the win the Wings get the 2 points and end up at 53 (tied with St. Louis for the division lead). Before the game Chicago had 52 points and gain one with the OT loss, thus also tied atop the central division with 53. Should be quite an interesting divisional race this year in a stacked central.
January 8th, 2012 at 10:18 PM ^
I still think St Louis will fall off towards the end of the season. I see them finishing in 9th place losing on the final day to miss out. I do think Detroit and Chicago will duke it out the rest of the season, of course Detroit winning it.

Nice win for the Wings. They play awesome at the Joe. Just need to start playing better on the road. Good way to get it going against a big time rival like Chicago.
January 8th, 2012 at 10:23 PM ^
I'll take a win on the road against a division rival with a backup goalie anytime. No matter how controversial.
January 8th, 2012 at 10:25 PM ^
He sure ate up that penalty shot. Why does Howard play so much? He doesn't seem THAT much better to me. I'd give him a day off more frequently than the wings do.
January 8th, 2012 at 10:31 PM ^
Other than his first game of the season (a shutout) Conklin has looked shaky most of the year. Also, Howard has been fantastic leading the league in wins and up there in GAA and save %. Not to mention he has won his last 12 in a row at home. Sure I think he should get some rest in the second half but he has been THAT much better
Edit: 7th in GAA: 2.05 (to 3.23) and 9th in save % at .924 (to .890)
January 8th, 2012 at 10:33 PM ^
Didn't know Howard was playing that well. I haven't followed the wings very closely since I moved back to Chicago. That's pretty good.
January 8th, 2012 at 10:32 PM ^
Conklin did play good, but that was by far the best Conklin has played this year. He has been brutal this season.
January 8th, 2012 at 10:49 PM ^
Last five minutes got us a three point spread. With 10 minutes left I was just hoping for 1 goal and take my chances in ot/so. Thats what we got and its a good feeling. Conklin deserves props today. Played well. I did not see the first period but thought we played well.

This game was very exciting to watch. It had a playoff-like atmosphere with a lot of action up and down the ice. The hawks did a good job of taking Detroit out of their puck possession style of play. The Wings didn't quit and it payed off. Conklin had an amazing game between the pipes. This was a huge victory, Go Wings!!!

GO WINGS

Fun to watch Wings/Hawks games. Weasel3216, you're right, Chicago is certainly a bigger rival now than Toronto, although only since about 2007 (throw Av's in between!). Before that, Hawks weren't much and in fact were drawing about 3,000 people. I moved to Chicago in 05' and was shocked to see so few people at games the first 2 years. They hated us even then though! I remember being at a Hawks/Blues games in 06' when a "Fuck Detroit" chant broke out. It was hilarious to see 3,000 people so preoccupied with a team they weren't even playing! They're in the top echelon now though (which happens when you have high draft choices as often as they did over the last 20 yrs). To me, while Wings were pulling rabbits out of their hat drafting and finding top talent in later rounds, the difference is that the Hawks were getting comparable talent in bigger bodies. Big talent beats small talent, everything else equal. No disrespect to the Hawks, they have a big talented team but are way too streaky given their talent level. Thank God for Jimmy Howard (and Lidstrom still playing at a high level). I have to admit, I didn't see him coming. I only see about 3 Wings games/yr live anymore and thought he'd be a good goalie, but not great. RIght now, he's awesome! What impresses me most is his positioning. While he seems to overslide side-to-side sometimes, mostly he's in great position. I'm looking forward to a fun second half that most likely is going down to the wire. Go Wings! And as always, Go Blue!

Hey - some of us can't catch the action for all local sports as it occurs and have DVR'd the games. Was looking forward to this game all week and now blown for me. Don't put scores and results of non-Michigan sporting events on front page.
