OT: Why No Brady Hoke Coaching Rumors?

Submitted by Eastern Wolverine on

I realize this may be stupid, but I'll lead with my chin and ask: With so many college head coaching positions available, why is Brady Hoke's name not brought up at all?  Has there been anything mentioned about him in recent weeks, or even months in the media? I risk missing something obvious but am concerned I'm not and my worst fears on the subject have been realized.

It's a legitimate question, because Brady will coach again.  I think the best answer is that he will not be a candidate for any of the top jobs, so once the carousel opens up the 2nd and 3rd tier gigs, you may see Hoke's name bandied about.  Places like Memphis or even Toledo may be where you see Brady eventually connected.

As a Toledo native, and a sort of secondary Rockets fan, I'd prefer to not see Hoke here. If the Rockets have to accept their fate as HR for power 5 jobs, I'd rather have a young guy with a big upside coach them for a couple years than a known, somewhat-bruised, commodity. Different story if I had a crystal ball and knew if Hoke had success he'd stay put for a bit.

Maybe Hoke has such a bad taste in his mouth from Corporate Brandon that he would prefer to be a lifer at a smaller school.  Steve Fisher is a great example of this in a way.  Fisher's demise was his own fault for, at best, using the "ostrich approach" to boosters buying players, but he has done well for himself at SDSU.

Hoke could give a directional or city school stability if he is tired of "climbing the ladder" and wants to just settle in.  The MAC may be a great landing place for him.

in comparison to Jim Harbaugh and his staff through player interviews, that I have read on this blog, is that under Hoke they did not know why one player played over another, they never knew where they stood on the depth chart, and they were never taught the correct techniques.

That is a pretty poor testament for a head coach on any level.

Add to that, Hoke never was a coordinator. The only non coordinator I know that made a successful leap to head coach was John Harbaugh in the NFL.

Hoke has commented (as recently as early this fall) that he wants to head up a Power 5 conference team again. I distinctly remember my skepticism upon reading that when I saw it.

Not entirely sure
He did not win enough games - certainly not enough BIG games - but his name isn't complete mud.
He treated his players well. He runs a high class program. I bet lots of the high school coaches are still happy to work with him. Players who are not heading to Top 25 programs will get a high character guy with good connections.
As far as the 'optics' go, 'former UM football coach' is a pretty easy sell for a much smaller program.

Dumb to Dumber to fucking outrageously Dumb. Did you see the Post Game Crazy Jim Post Game after OSU raped him. God damn was his anus sore. He could barely speak. He sounded like a fucking idiot. Everyone in the media is making fun of that stupid motherficker. DUMB-ASS!!

I think it's a legitimate question too. If you compare what he did at Michigan to what Muschamp did at Florida, I think it's safe to say he may be a better HC than that guy. Also consider the talent left for Muschamp vs the talent left for Hoke. And Muschamp already got another power 5 HC gig.

And most of the firings have come at Power 5 schools.  Once those vacancies are filled, I assume you'll hear his name come up for the smaller schools.

One shot in the dark possibility: Les Miles hires him for his staff since there are rumors of a big shakeup on his staff.  I don't know how Brady would assure any boosters, but I could Les giving him a shot at least as a D-Line coach.

Hoke hasn't been a coordinator as far as I know. He also was pretty close to Carr, who isn't the biggest Miles fan.

I am guessing Hoke's next coaching gig is as a head coach.  He seems to really love coaching and loves the kids he coaches. It'd be cool if he could land a P5 gig, but if not, working through a MAC school again would be a good fit as well.

need to have been a coordinator to be a D line coach, which he has been at numerous stops? I agree the fit probably doesn't make sense at LSU but D line coach seems like an ideal gig for him at a P5 or NFL team if he didn't get a head coaching shot at a lower tier school.

I don't know if it's fair to look at Hoke's status now and draw conclusions about his desirability in 2011.  He now has his poor Michigan record on his resume, whereas back then he'd only coached Ball State and SDSU.  IIRC, he was rumored to be a candidate for the Minnesota job before they hired Kill.

But if we're talking about coaches we legitimately could have hired (and not just guys we wanted), I'm not sure how long the list is.  Other than (apparently) Harbaugh and Miles, I'm not sure who else was out there.

Which is why, of course, an AD should plan ahead for these things before pulling the trigger on the previous coach.  I remember thinking at the time that "the Process" was a way of hedging the Harbaugh bet by keeping RR as plan B if Jim wasn't coming.  Whoops.

I don't think P5 schools will touch him and most of the discussion is, understandably, about them currently.  When those vacancies are filled (as some will inevitably be by people moving up from the mid majors) I think you'll see his name be brought up for the G5 group.

31-20 and 18-14 in the Big Ten should be good enough for Rutgers level coaching. Don't him out just yet. Anyone know how many Power 5 jobs are currently open? I bet Schiano finds one too. Hell even Sark will work his way back into a job and maybe Lane Kiffin too.
