OT: what did you do with your stimulus check?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on April 24th, 2020 at 1:08 PM

Or did you even get yours yet? My girlfriend is still waiting on hers since she owed the IRS and they “didn’t have her direct deposit info”

I saved a good chunk, paid off some credit card debt, made an investment and of course bought some Michigan memorabilia which I posted on here a few days ago.

There’s some proposals on the table right now for more stimuli in the future according to Forbes. Not gonna link the article and incite political chatter but it’s out there.

The amount of responses explaining that it hasn't arrived yet is extraordinary!  I have to believe that more people than I thought (far more, actually) do not use direct deposit.  This confounds me!  Dir Deposit has been around for more than 30 years!

Nonetheless, I used a good portion of what I received (not the full amount available, but most of it) to obtain decking to replace my rotting wood deck.  The rest I'll hold onto and hope I won't need...

As for another check, I don't see it happening for a long time (if ever).  McConnell has already said that he'll let states go bankrupt before taking on any more debt - despite that it is legally impossible for states to do that.  If he's willing to let states go that route, there is no way he'll add debt for people's benefit - especially if that includes 'the Dems'.

Not sure if you've been following this rollout, but almost half the country hasn't gotten them yet.

This is because of many reasons, including people who used H&R Block or Turbo Tax (not a small group) in large part haven't gotten them because the feds claim they don't have people's bank account info for direct depoist; the tax preparers have said "Yeah, you do" and....that's it. No resolution.

Additionally, if you used direct deposit to *pay* taxes (e.g., because you owed money), many of those folks haven't gotten paid either.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/20/why-you-havent-received-your-coronavirus-stimulus-check-yet.html

And if you try to go online to fix it (e.g., enter your bank account info)? No dice.

It's going to take until the end of the summer to complete the payments, as paper checks (supposedly starting to go out this week) are generated at a rate of 5 million a week, and there are over 50 million people who still need to get paid.

You're correct in that I haven't been following - which is why I was so surprised to learn this.  I did, just 20 minutes ago, see a Politico headline (or Vox?) saying that 88M people had received it.  My understanding was that 80M were supposed to have been in that first cut two weeks ago.  It's disappointing, and dis-heartening, that this is taking so long.

I'm also a bit surprised to hear that H&R Block / Taxcut users are having problems.  I've been filing with H&R Block for years, and have already received my check.

I really hope the IRS can get its head out of its ass and get people the money promised them.  Whether that money is deserved, or not, is up to you to decide.  The fact is the law says we should get the money, so gotdammit, deliver the damn money!

Due to a "side gig" where income isn't taxed when i receive it, I always owe come tax season.  I have 'direct deposit' in that the government knows where to take money from on April 15, but apparently that is not good enough info for sending money back.

So I have to wait for a paper check.

You can go in and provide your DD info on the IRS website so you may not have to wait for the paper check. Given the shared experiences here, you won't see the DD anytime soon, but at least probably before a check.

Does annoy me that we can pay via DD but they can't turn that around and send the money back to where it usually comes from.

Because I had very little credit debt to begin with. My emergency card that I used to run out and stockpile with groceries when the panic began in early March was at like $500. Most of that number is gone now.

I've religiously filed my taxes a month ahead of the deadline ever since I became an adult. Did so this year as well. Haven't seen the deposit and the portal gives me the same "Once we have your payment date we will update this page."

So, cue the "IF I HAD ONE" meme.

But in all seriousness, my fiancee and I are just going to stash it in our bank accounts. Moving/wedding/new jobs all incoming so we're just pocketing it.

I've been saving up all winter to buy a jet ski. I have always wanted one. The check put me over the top for the ski that i wanted.

I’m giving mine to my mom to help pay her rent. It just went up $130 more a month. Bastards.

Got kinda lucky because my wife hardly worked in 2018 and we haven't filed 2019 yet, so we were under the derating cap and go the full amount for two adults and two kids.Had we filed 2019, we would have barely gotten anything.

Anyway, it's sitting in a bank account and probably will be until we have more confidence in our jobs and salary. There's already been a 10% haircut in salary and rumblings of furloughs at my work, so trying to prepare for the worst.

Me and the wife got ours yesterday. Havent done much with it besides paying off the last 350 I owed on a credit card. Don't have too many plans for it currently.

When we get them we will likely send them to Ann Arbor for our season tickets.  If there is a season, fine.  If not, we can roll them forward to next season or consider a rebate.  Football revenue is the engine that drives the entire athletic department.  Since I am lucky enough to be able to work from home, I am happy to support Michigan athletics.

Was finally able to log on and provide my bank info. Like many others I kept getting errors. My furnace died the week before Christmas so I got that and the AC replaced.  AC went in this week and the money is going towards that.

We probably won't get ours until late July or August (base on what Don posted).  It will probably go towards my wife's medical bills.  We had a bit of a shock when we received a bill for just under $30,000 for her hospital stay (excluding doctors' fees). It turns out, that shouldn't have gone to us but to our insurance company.  I'm guessing what we will owe after insurance will still eat up every bit of our stimulas check plus a few more thousand.

The local brothel makes house calls. It was mask and glove play at six-foot distance. Afterwards we disinfected in separate bathrooms. Pretty much like my married life except the money stretched farther. Thank you for the stimulus.

Put it towards a fully loaded year old Toyota Highlander that we were able to talk the dealership down almost $5,000 from their "special online price" that they listed. Got a great deal.
