OT: USMNT / Intl' Break

Submitted by JMo on October 6th, 2021 at 1:55 PM

I know this is regularly an Urban Meyer blog, but from time to time USMNT topics come up. This week is another international break. I thought I'd throw together a little primer for those who are interested.

Short Notes/Quick Hitter Style:

The Schedule:

USMNT vs Jamaica / Oct 7 / 7:30 EST / ESPN2
Panama vs USMNT / Oct 10 / 6:00 EST / Paramount+
USMNT vs Costa Rica / Oct 13 / 7:00 EST / ESPN2

The Broadcast:

A lot of questions about who what and why. Basically the short answer is this: Home teams control the broadcast rights to their national team matches.  The English USMNT rights were purchased jointly by Fox and ESPN, and they split the English home broadcasts of the USMNT games. This grouping of two home games will be aired on ESPN2 with Jon Champion and Taylor Twellman on the call. Champion not as good as Darke, but still very good. Twellman is, well, fine.

Why is the Panama/USMNT only on Paramount+? The Away broadcasts are a separate rights package and were purchased by CBS. In an effort to promote more footy content on their digital streaming network Paramount+ (along with Champions League, Serie A, etc), CBS has put most of the USMNT away qualifiers on Paramount+. So, CBS wants you to buy P+ ergo put USMNT matches on there to incent you to do it.

Andres Cordero and Maurice Edu are the commentary. Not a fan. The studio show is pretty awful too. Kate Abdo is the only redeeming part. Charlie Davies talks like a guy who watches Stephen A. Smith and thinks "hey, I can do that!" Clint Dempsey barely talks. And Oguchi Onyewu would be OK if the other two weren't so awful. CBS seems to have realized that having three former US players may not be the best idea after all, even as good as Abdo is. They have hired former SI writer Grant Wahl to boost their studio show. It needs help.

You also have the American/Spanish broadcasts: Jamaica @ Univision, Panama @ NBC Universo, CRC @ UniMas

The Team:

Full roster by position (Club)
Goalkeepers (3): Sean Johnson (New York City FC), Zack Steffen (Manchester City), Matt Turner (New England Revolution)

Defenders (10): George Bello (Atlanta United), John Brooks (Wolfsburg), Sergiño Dest (Barcelona), Mark McKenzie (Genk), Shaq Moore (Tenerife), Tim Ream (Fulham), Chris Richards (Hoffenheim), Antonee Robinson (Fulham), Miles Robinson (Atlanta United), DeAndre Yedlin (Galatasaray)

Midfielders (8): Kellyn Acosta (Colorado Rapids), Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig), Gianluca Busio (Venezia), Luca de la Torre (Heracles), Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy), Weston McKennie (Juventus), Yunus Musah (Valencia), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders)

Forwards (6): Brenden Aaronson (Red Bull Salzburg), Paul Arriola (D.C. United), Matthew Hoppe (Mallorca), Ricardo Pepi (FC Dallas), Tim Weah (Lille), Gyasi Zardes (Columbus Crew)

The Standings:

Because of COVID qualifying for 2022 WC in Qatar is more compact and slightly different than normal. There are eight teams in the US's region (CONCACAF) ergo the 'octagonal'. Current standings:

Mexico 2-0-1 7pts
Canada 1-0-2 5pts
States 1-0-2 5pts
Panama 1-0-2 5pts
C Rica 0-1-2 2pts
Hondur 0-1-2 2pts
El Sal 0-1-2 2pts
Jamaic 0-2-1 1pt

The top three teams automatically earn a spot into 22 Qatar. The fourth place team will qualify for a international "play-in" game.

There's still a decent road to go as we're only 3 games into a 14 game qualifying period for each team. But after this block that'll be 6 of 14, which is almost half done. All results are important, and the US kinda slow rolled their way into 5 points.

Some Quick Storylines:

Ricardo Pepi - Almost out of nowhere, the 18 year old standout thrust himself into the spotlight and salvaged the USMNT's hopes with a huge performance at Honduras last round. Do we have our true 9 (striker)? We've been down this road before. I choose to be optimistic. So, fingers crossed. That said, if he has a couple more performances like Honduras, look for Pepi to become a club transfer rumor darling through the holiday season.

Pulisic and Reyna - The two most talented creators on the US squad, Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna are both injured and not available for this group of matches. How the US fills those gaps will likely define their outcomes for these three matches.

Weston McKennie - Rumor has it that WK and MGoBrian Cook broke curfew in Nashville and were spotted on a pedal tavern with 9 bachelorettes before a 2-day bender at Kid Rock's Honky Tonk. McKennie was shipped back to Italy for breaking COVID protocols. He's back with the team for this group of qualifiers, a few of his squad mates have made thinly veiled comments that he needs to earn back their trust.

At Panama - Away matches in COVID-Red countries for English/Euro based players like Steffen have been mildly controversial. There's rumor that some clubs (like Steff's City) may prefer they not even travel for those matches. This may be why Sean Johnson, an MLS-based keeper, was brought on as 3rd keeper, versus english-based Ethan Horvath. Keep an eye out if Turner is given the nod for Panama and maybe Steff just hangs back for this one.

Keeper - On that note, my guess is Steffen for the two home matches, and Turner for the Panama match.

John Brooks and Sergino Dest - Both struggled at times in the last group. Brooks with quality of play. Dest with play and then injury. Let's hope to see them bounce back.

Stars in the Making - All of them. If you're not familiar, this US side is one of the youngest international teams in the world. That they're performing at this high of a level is extremely exciting. The true test of this team will come four and eight years down the road likely, ala Belgium in the early 10s. But this is exciting times.

Keep an Eye On - Pepi (of course), Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah, Tim Weah, Matthew Hoppe, Shaq Moore, Chris Richards, Luca, Busio... man it's tough, the team is so young. Keep an eye on most everyone.

Berhalter - Controversial start to his qualifying. Made some pretty questionable decisions and subsitutions (or lackthereof if you're talking Canada). Sands bad, Pepi good. No callup for Scally bad. Honestly it's just a mixed bag with GGGB.

Outcomes - Panama at Panama will be tough. Going on the road to these hostile environments with riot shields and smoke-filled fields after firework shows that just keep going during the match is akin to Hickory going on the road to Terhune. A draw in Panama would be great. Then wins at home vs Jamaica and CRC would keep the US in the pole position. I dont know that 7 or 9 points is a must for this round, but you have to stay in front, otherwise you're playing catch-up and the match clock starts ticking loudly.

Costa Rica - The third match will be played in Columbus. No word yet on Cayman Nebraska's availability for the match, or if Urban Chophouse will be catering the event. Things are just in flux right now, as you can expect.

If you're looking for an actual answer to your question:

Lately the blog has felt more like an Urban Meyer tabloid than a Michigan blog.  Feels like there is a new post regarding the guy every day, sometimes multiple times per day.

OP was stating that anyone looking for Urban Meyer news should not read his post.  lol

Ugh , Paramount+ again, wtf?  I think I found it on a Spanish-language station last time, though. Always better to watch on those channels anyway.

Thanks for the writeup though. Very informative.

I auto record USMNT games on You Tube TV.    During the last round, one of the games was magically recorded on a Spanish language channel.  The depressing discovery of how much my once rudimentary grasp of conversational Spanish had eroded to the point of only knowing "Donde esta el bano?" was more than counteracted by the delightful energy and enthusiasm of the announcers.   And the absolute thrill of the few times that I actually parsed a complete sentence in real time.

Thanks man, well done. Looks to me like it all hinges on Berhalters's decisions. I guess with Pulisic and Reyna out, he's selected a decent team (opinions will very here). I'll be curious about who he puts out as starters, and how he sets them up. A lot of people feel the team is doing well in spite of Berhalter instead of because of him.

Yeah, nice post.  I enjoyed it!  At this point no match is a true 'must-win' but the home match tomorrow against Jamaica is close to it.  A draw there would be a big blow.  I agree at Panama you are hoping for a draw.  CR at home again is close to a 'must-win'.  Get 7 points and US is well on the way to qualifying.  Anything less than 5 would be a disaster in this 3-game stretch.

Probably a couple of factors:

1-He has generally been competent for USMNT in the last year. He's solid defensively and avoids big mistakes.

2-He brings a rare veteran presence to this team and has Berhalter's trust

Having said that, Joe Scally is tearing it up in the Bundesliga and should be considered over Yedlin.

This.

I'm probably one of DY's biggest fans. He was one of the few talents during a lean period a handful of years back. That said, it's clear he's lost a step. It's hard to see him get blown by. He has moments though, he had a setup in Honduras that was aces. But his minuses are greater than his plusses at this point.

Scally on the other hand is crushing. We still need to get him tied (i think). But either way, he's been on a tear.

The only logic for DY is age and experience. But Gyasi and Acosta, are on this team too.  I don't get it.

I think GGG puts a lot of stock in guys who’ve “been there”, and he has certain guys he trusts, whether they deserve it or not. Lletget, Yedlin, Zardes, Ream all come to mind here.

After the roster was released he said he wants to bring Scally in but wanted to focus on guys who aren’t brand new to the squad.

He’ll prob call him up in November and give him his first cap against Mexico ?

That attitude makes sense to me in games like these.  In WCQ, the US just has to be "solid" to advance.

When we get to the actual world cup and need an extra edge against some of the more quality football countries, I think we'll see more dynamic players.  Hopefully we're able to get ahead of the curve early in qualifying so GGG can start to work some of the younger, more dynamic but less experienced players into the side later in qualifying

Would love to get 7 points out of this window. Two home games means we should aim for two wins. I would be annoyed if we had to settle for 5 again. Pissed off if we got less than that.

I know we're missing some of our better players, but the point of having a deep squad - which I think we do in most spots - is that the dropoff between players shouldn't significantly alter your chances

I see from your emoji that it looks like you are a Wolverton fan. After years of looking to choose a Premier team, I watched them play Man U and dominate play in the first half in everything but the score, only to lose 1-0. Loudest crowd that I have heard to date. That was enough for me to start following the Wolves. Traore is fun to watch as well. He can do everything but the small task of scoring goals or gathering assists, which is baffling and apparently enough to push him to the pine. The dude is huge though. Easy to spot on the pitch, or bench as of late.

As for the USMNT - I hope to see Pepi, Weah, Aaronson, Musah, McKennie and Adams in the front six. That's a lot of talent and speed and I feel the best option since the team is without Pulisic and Reyna. As for GK, I don't see how you can't keep Turner in there. He has been playing at an extremely high level for months while Steffen has been mostly a spectator.

I enjoy the CBS studio crew, not for the analysis or information, but for the personalities.  Clint is funny as hell and all three of them regularly make jokes at each other's expense.  Kate is very good at her job and will occasionally join in on the friendly jabs.  She also brings a level of professionalism to the show while obviously being easy on the eyes.  Kate actually stated towards the end of their last broadcast that this crew is genuinely her favorite crew to work with.  She said that they're a lot of fun and they're no different when the cameras turn off.  I admire that.

If you're looking for actual analysis you won't find much in that group.  If you want some fun interactions these guys are perfect.

Personally I think we all take sports a little too seriously nowadays and that crew is a breath of fresh air for me.

Well, I think the one thing we can definitely agree on is Kate Abdo. She's tops. I think I prefer her to Rebecca Lowe.

Now, as for the studio show.... and this point goes for ESPN and Fox too. As a 30 year fan of the USMNT, I can tell you with certainty that I don't give a good flying Urban whether or not a former US player is the person talking to me about US soccer. It should not be considered a prerequisite.

I liked Eric Wynalda, I know many didn't. But I also think that Steve McManaman would do an excellent job talking about the US team. Honestly, I don't need Marcelo Balboa, Maurice Edu, Brad Friedel, or John Harkes, Robin Fraser or Desmond Armstrong to tell me whats going on, more than I would need Efan Ekoku or Robbie Mustoe (just to pick two names out of a hat).

This to me is the critical flaw of all US broadcast decision maker's decisions. That somehow this is a prerequisite.

I agree that we take our sports a little too serious, and I try to not. But I also don't want to watch a shit show for no reason either. Davies, Dempsey and Onyewu, while amusing, was a literal shit show. Dempsey said maybe 10 words the first broadcast. He did better the second, but it was downright weird for the first match. Gooch does okay and honestly, I think he would do fine in a better room with some decent talent. We'll just have to agree to disagree on Davies. He's young. Clearly he's trying to prove himself. He makes crazy outlandish statements then contradicts himself later. That's what Abdo was so perplexed about with the Honduras broadcast. And then ultimately the guys were simply unable to explain what they were thinking. Why they were excited. Why and how they could be so distraught, then feel so good in such a short amount of time, and it all be fine. And that, to me, is the entire crux of what they're there to do. If you can't explain it, if you can't find the words, then we gotta get someone else in the chair. All of them have great memories for me as players. But a broadcaster and a player a miles apart.

I dont need Xs and Os. I love The Athletic's coverage for that, and I like to get most of my actual analysis that's done after the fact in print. (see: MGoBlog reader)

But as far as broadcast, what I definitely need and want are guys on the studio desk who can describe what happened, why it happened, how it's relevant, and what we need to know going forward. It was like pulling teeth to get that from these guys last time.

CBS seems to agree as they're changing the broadcast and adding a non-player in Wahl to try to get something better out of the deal.

I like Wynalda too. He was too outspoken and that eventually got him booted from tv. He has a good podcast, which I’m sure you are aware of.

I also agree with you on Davies. He is the worst of the bunch. Gooch has some promise and hopefully he continues to develop his on-screen personality.

Wynalda always seemed to have a weird mean streak where he seemed to think he could do better despite the teams he was commentating on having way more talent than him just by virtue of American soccer advancing so far since he came onto the scene.  I get a little of that with Twellman also but not as bad.  I want honesty and appreciated the infamous Twellman rant, but I'd also appreciate a little more positivity when things are going right. Just always seems angry.

Watching that studio team was painful as others have said.  They need to cut out the right half and just keep Abdo and Gooch.  He seemed to be trying to make reasonable points and Davies kept trying to pull him back into clickbaity hyperbole.

Ian Darke is a commentator hidden in the voice of a play by play guy. Oh how I loved his call of Italy's equalizer in the Euro 2020(1) final. The disappointment was tangible and delicious.

Neither Darke nor Champion is as good as John Paul Della Camera, which begs the question as to why American soccer broadcasts feature English commentators, especially for games involving the USMNT.

Is this a thing worldwide? Would Gus Johnson call games for the BBC involving the UK national basketball team?

Neither Darke nor Champion is as good as John Paul Della Camera

This is literal bonkers. jg2112 you may be the only person on planet Earth who prefers JP.

Your Gus Johnson parallel is interesting. Fox thinks so poorly of you as an American, that they originally tried to get Gus Johnson... a man who literally had never watched soccer in his life, to broadcast US and International soccer matches when they won the broadcast rights. It was such a galactic failure they did an about face and cancelled the whole thing.  Basically Fox execs thought, hey dumb american sports fan loves Gus screaming at them, they'll love it if he screams soccer at them, even if he doesn't know shit about it.

But, sure. "UK Basketball" would probably make sense for Gus. Although I might make a better argument for Mike Breen or peak Marv Albert. If you were a GB Hoops fan, and Sky Sports paid big bucks to get an iconic basketball voice Mike Breen or Marv Albert to call your games you wouldn't be happy? I know I would.

Darke and Champion have DECADES of experience calling the biggest matches on the biggest stages. I want the best story tellers, with the most experience, who are the best at what they do bar none. Gimme Darke, or Tyler, or Champion, or Arlo, or Clyve, but please no JP.

FWIW, John Brooks pulled out of the group with back issues so he won't be playing.

Also, Jamaica is missing some of their best players for tomorrow, including Michael Antonio, who is probably the best striker in CONCACAF.

I think 7 points is pretty darn close to a "must" in this window.  None of these teams are intimidating and business needs to be taken care of now before the tougher matches (2 Mexico games and @ Canada) come into view.  The US doesn't want to be scrambling for points later down the line.  Take care of business now and they can afford to lose a match or two later.

I seriously hope CBS abandons the current pre-match setup because it is a chaotic mess.  Four on the panel is too many & while Kate Abdo is fine the chaos of multiple "analysts" trying to get attention for poor jokes becomes painful to watch.

It is the same setup for the Champions League coverage except Peter Schmeichel is more cringe-worthy than any of the Americans
