OT: USA vs St. Vincent WC Qualifier

Submitted by uncle leo on

Can't find any radio coverage, not sure if it's on TV.

USA has a 2-0 lead in the first half. Pretty important game to get to Russia. Completely snuck up on me in terms of date. They play Trinidad on Monday which will be the big test.

A lot slimmer. Maybe it's just me.

That penalty is everything that reminds me of Matt Stafford. He's got such a great leg, and he holds up play really well. But darn it, he just has never been able to put it together.

He kinda does. Maybe he will stop having all these soft tissue injuries.

It was all down hill when he came back to the MLS. His work rate was never really great, but it was terrible after he came back to the MLS.

I'm a Red Bulls fan so I was pretty mad when Kljestan wasn't called in initially. Glad he's proven the MLS zealots right.

What's weird to me is how frequently Klinny subs on late call-ups. If you think they might play, why not just call them the first time around?

Pulisic = Real deal. Dude is going to be best-ever US player.

I was kidding myself thinking, Dortmund didnt sell him to Liverpool b/c Dortmund is expecting that in 2 yrs they will sell him to City or Real or Bayern for BIG bucks. But maybe thats not all that insane.

And I wonder if one calculus for teams will be -- if you get Pulisic, you get a huge US market with him -- its like free advertising in the US. Bumps up your jersey sales in the US, etc. Most European or So American players dont bring those financials (With a few exceptions-- Leo, CR7 etc). Pulisic is not talent-wise like that level of player, but being the best American player will shower a team with extra income bc the US has no other marquis player on that level. Yet. (Maybe Wood is heading that way.)

Have to be honest the USMNT continues to underwhelm me even in a 6-0 rout. The style of play is bomb the ball deep and try to win in the air or chase it down even against weak competition. Why aren't we dominating possession and building up our attack? We will never close the gap against the elite like this. Oh and we need 23 Pulisic's to be elite.

Trinidad and Tobago up 2-1 on GUatemala with about 15 minutes left. If that result holds, the US is through to the Hex with a match to spare. Joining us will be Mexico, T&T, and Costa Rica. Panama can clinch a spot tonight if they get at least a point against Jamaica. If Jamaica wins, they'll be even on points with Panama for second in that group and Panama would be playing Costa Rica on Tuesday while Jamaica would have Haiti. Honduras beat Canada 2-1 earlier tonight, so they should be in unless they lose to Mexico and Canada beats El Salvador and the -5 goal difference is made up. So most likely scenario looks like: USA, Mexico, T&T, Costa Rica, Panama and Honduras. That's not a gimme Hex for the US or Mexico.
