OT: Toledo's Matt Campbell expected to be named as ISU HC

Submitted by UMChick77 on

Just posted from the Des Moines Register a few hours ago, didn't see it here yet since a lot of us follow the MAC. Also BCSN/Toledo Blade is confirming

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/iowa-state/randy-…

So here's the coaching update so far:

Filled: Hawaii, Illinois, VT, Minnesota, ISU

Vacant: Maryland, Missouri, South Carolina, Southern Cal, Miami, Memphis, Syracuse, UCF, Toledo, North Texas,  possibly Tulane & Rutgers.

LSU is safe for now for Les. Jimbo is not leaving FSU. Lots of rumors around Strong having a lot of interest to Miami although he denies it (did the same with Louisville when he was considering the Texas job), and of course DJ Durkin impressing Maryland according to the reports.

*Edited to add USC, Missouri, Minnesota, Syracuse, UCF, North Texas, Tulane (multiple reports) & Toledo

Wonder if Bob Stitt's name will start generating again as a possible candidate for any open jobs. He is 8-4 and in the FCS playoffs in his first season at Montana.

Contrary to the drunken aftermath from a terrible performance, UM benefits, greatly, from Durkin staying. Rising young coach, already very good.  He also seems to be a very good recruiter and any wobble in the current defensive recruiting class is going to have a major impact two years from now. The depth chart is scary after next year without finishing this class in style.

So many coaching openings, however, that it seems plausible we lose him. It would be a set back for him to leave. If he does, I hope we can land Shafer or lure a top DC from elsewhere.

Immature and irrational people have a hard time being fair. To see some of the post-game posts in some of these threads... When we win, it's ok, but when we lose it has to be somebody's fault or we were jobbed by the refs.

We lost to Ohio State because of an obvious talent disparity. That, and the fact that the talent we have on defense is better geared towards playing a traditional offense and not a spread/zone read oriented offense.

Durkin and Co. did a helluva job this year with guys that they inherited. While the 2nd half of the OSU game and the IU game were ugly from a defensive standpoint, that really doesn't diminish his talent, reputation, or value to this team and coaching staff.

You are correct in that he is a good young coach and is an excellent recruiter. Let's hope he stays. If he leaves, I expect Harbaugh to bring in a more than capable replacement.

Strong never denied his interest as in the Texas job as strongly as he has the Miami job.  Texas is the better job and Miami can't pay him what Texas is.  This rumor is based on the fact that Strong used to coach at UF and nothing else.  Strong had to get rid of some Texas players that were were bad fits for what he wanted to do.

Have you watched the amount of trash talking Miami does and that includes when they are down like 42-0 to someone.  He would not put up with that.

He also wasn't their first choice...so all he had to do was say "I haven't been contacted by Texas" and know that he techinically...was telling the truth.

Miami has him at the top of their list. He's said it over and over that he's not leaving...and honestly, I don't see why he would. The young players at Texas look REALLY good.

They're still a couple of years away, but Texas could be 7-5 next year. Which long term isn't good, but is a solid improvement.

The Big XII is a balanced league...I'd argue it's much tougher for Texas to get back to 9-3 than it was for Michigan. The B1G has better teams at the top. But I'd rather play the middle and bottom of the B1G than play those teams that can beat you in the B1G like KSU, Texas Tech and WVU. Not to mention you have to deal with Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma and OSU.

AND they still have ND and Cal on their schedule next year. Brutal.

Split with the middle of the road teams who can light you up, split with the big 4, split with ND/Cal and you're 8-4/7-5, more likely 7-5.

I don't think Strong makes it to see Texas win a Big XII title, but he'll leave a solid foundation.

Maryland is very underrated job imo, im surprised they are not shooting for the moon with a bigger name. You play in arguably the best division in college football (which also may be a negitive because you have to compete with Urban, Jim, Dantanio & Franklin year and year out), very solid recruiting grounds and of coarse the whole Under Armor aspect.

Would like to see them get somebody respectable in there and turn that program around. If they can hold on to Haskins, they'll have their QB for the future. Elite recruit.

It's a GREAT selling point...that's the most idiotic thing I've ever heard (today - it's early).

It's a fantastic selling point, it's just not great for your personal job security.

You think those kids down there don't want to play against Bama, LSU, Auburn? You can definitely sell playing in that conference.

It's big time football. If you don't want competition, go play in the Sun Belt and dominate.

And at the beginning of the year, the Pac-12 South was said to be tougher than the SEC West...so there is competition everywhere (in reference to running to USC). And USC's standards are super high and patience are super thin...so it's not like there's no pressure to win their either.

And the tradition isn't there. That said, it wasn't there for Oregon either.

They just need to find a good fit and not go for the previously fired big name for 4-5 years ago. Get the next Tom Herman and not rehire the Schiano/Golden/Edsall type just because he has "ties."

I'd love to see them get Dan Mullen, just don't really see why he'd leave.

I would not want to coach Maryland. I do not think it’s a place that is going to lead to building a program you can spend a lot of time at. It will be hard to win the division. While it is in good recruiting territory, Michigan and Ohio State are going to take a lot of the best players out of there. I think expectations if are going to be pretty high and it will be hard to deliver. Additionally, I don't think UA is going to drop the same amount of cash as Nike does with Oregon.

One of the biggest problems with the Maryland job is no one in the DC areas -- inclduing Maryland alums for the most part -- cares about Maryland football. Maryland football is akin to Indiana football:  a nice diversion until the real games begin.  I've got a couple of Maryland alums working for me and they've got basketball season tickets, but have trouble remembering who they're playing next in football.

0-12

Rumored to be interested in Durkin...no rumors of him being interested or him interviewing. Just a popular name they throw around in Orlando along with Geoff Collins (the UF DC).

Obviously Durkin is a solid coach.  But with two key D-line players went out it seemed like there was little scheme adjustment to attempt to mitigate the loss. And sitting there all day yesterday watching what looked hauntingly like Rich Rod D-alignments that played right into OSU's strengths was beyond excruciating.  I'll wait to see the "upon further review" analysis but my impression from the scene of the crime was that we ran passive nickel-ish schemes most all of the game.  Sure, they hit two passes over the top of significance but dang they ran it down our throats over 30 times.

I struggle with coaches that seem to have ideological hard wiring and cannot adjust. And of course I can be totally wrong, nothing new there.  Just a beat down fan with an opinion.

Based on personnel he did a very good job.  Also position coaches getting guys like jenkins stone and clark to be competent players when they looked awful with last staff.

People forget we dont have a single senior who is for sure going to be drafted.  Meanwhile MSU and OSU have a bunch of guys like Calhoun Bosa Davis Washington Perry  Thomas ....and a bevy of underclassmen for OSU who will declare and go.

We have a few guys who are UDFA or 7th round types as seniors.

From the outside looking in the D lost its 2 best players last year in Clark and JMFr so it was nice to see the advancement.  We had very obvious holes but only a few teams had personnel to exploit it.  They did well with what they had - need better talent in future to work with at DE and LB.

I'd give the Defensive staff an A- on player development and a B- on in game adjustments / pre game scheming.  Maybe we had no tools (players) to change anything but seeing the same game plan post Indiana for OSU was frustrating.   We had a lot of freshman QB types or injuries (BYU, UNLV, Oregon State, NW) early in the season post Utah which helped make us look a bit better than we were.

Or even 3-4

Charlton - Henry/Hurst - Wormley

Bolden, Morgen, RJS, Ross

Seems like we were "beef" challenged the whole day.  I like your 4-3 better. My point was why keep redefining the definition of insanity?

At some point you have to adapt/adjust...Durkin failed miserably in that regard. Just try something different, if it doesn't work...oh well, go back to what you know, but at least you gave it a shot.

And it's not a radical idea. It's not even like putting in a backup QB for a series or two. These guys can play/practice a 4-3. Hell, they played it under Mattison. Let him help if you need some help.

ISU has been burned before in a scenario like this, when Brian Kelly backed out on them to take the Cincy job. If Campbell doesn't suddenly get a better offer, this is a great get. Hoke to Toledo.

I think it's possible Durkin leaves after the season. I would not bet on it though. If he is already doing interviews then that shows a want to. Unless they just interview for practice?

Or a way to get more money out of your current employer? That could be the angle Durkin might be playing. I get he wants a HC job but Maryland?

Just my two cents, but I never went into a job interview for a job I wasn't half way interested in. I just rather not waste my time or the other guy's time.

Durkin to Maryland is just a bit more odd for me.
