Rational? Coincidence.
Faltering one year in the second half is a coincidence. Doing it for four consecutive seasons (see bronxblue's numbers below) suiggests something else is going on. We're early in the 2010 second half, but thus far they are conforming to that pattern again.
Yesterday was inexcusable. We got 3 in the 1st inning against Carmona while he was walking the entire ballpark. Then.........well, we got 3 in the first against Carmona. 1 run in the last 24 innings thru the 5th inning today against the 2nd worst team in the AL is ridiculous.
Verlander did enough to keep this team competitive yesterday afternoon, had the offense done anything at all after the 1st, and Porcello threw a gem last night. Both got flushed down the toilet.
I've been watching off and on the whole weekend and there has been absolutley no effort. Cabrera especially...it would appear he has still not returned from the All Star break
It seems like we falter in the second half of the season and teams like Minnesota always flourish. It's early though, who knows what these Tigers are going to end up doing...

are about to lose 3 of 4 in Minnesota so as pathetic as the guys have played this weekend they're still only 1.5 back and heading home for a long stretch.
...have been an absolute disgrace this weekend. Utterly embarrassing to drop three, possibly four highly winnable games against a bottom feeder like Cleveland.
This organization is going nowhere if they continue to believe this mentally soft play is acceptable.

because 3 shitty days with 4 games against arguably the Indians' best pitching lineup means they've dropped to the bottom. shit happens dude. fucking pirates beat the phillies soundly earlier this month like a drum (3 out of 4 games).

..getting swept in a four game series by arguably the worst team in the division sets a bad tone for the second half of the season. I'm not freaking out, but it's definitely not good.
This is a disturbing pattern for this team. They play great the first half of the season, then seemingly fall off the pace after the AS break. Here has been there first half-second half records since 2006:

Last year they were only .500 after the AS break, and that was the best record they've had since 2006. I have no idea what is wrong with this club (wearing down pitchers in the first half, hitters regressing, etc.), but I'm worried that this will be another .500 season with a late-season collapse.

As some above have alluded to, you can't take the first four games after the break and jump to the assumption that we will have (another) second half collapse.
The question that should be asked is, "Why can't they win on the road?" That's what drives me crazy.
The losing on the road is extremely troubling as well, but they have struggled the past few years on the road as well, so this is nothing new. I'm not saying anyone should throw in the towel, but when you cannot consistently win on the road, you are doomed to struggle down the stretch. And while 4 games is 4 games, this is also a 4-game sweep on the road against arguably the worst team in the AL (Baltimore is the other team, IME). At least with Chicago struggling, they can point to Minnesota being a quality opponent. Detroit is going to have a hard time making up those 4 lost games agains the likes of Minny and ChiSox.
There has been zero consistency in the starting pitching all year. They need some punch at the bottom of the lineup. Question is: Is this a transitional year or do we really feel we have a or shot worth giving up a young star or prospect? Most thought the Tigers would be .500 this year so I wouldn't sell the farm. Go Blue!
They tried to nab a #2/3 last year with Washburn (which looked like a bad move when they made it based on some of his stats), and that didn't pan out. I think Dombrowski will be more careful this year when it comes to big moves, but I could see him try to snag a catcher with a bit more pop or a spot starter if the price is right. Right now, this team is not going to compete with the big-time teams like the Yankees and Rays, so I'd rather they keep building a better team than go for a short-term fix that gets this team swept in the ALDS. I know the playoffs are nice, but having a legit chance at a WC is better than being whomped every year.
I'd like to make a run at a decent 2 to put behind Verlander that is inked.
Tigers are a good young team, anyone expecting greatness from them is going to be disappointed. I will be surprised if the Tigers make the playoffs and I will be surprised if they aren't still in the race when Michigan destroys Connecticut, such is life in the AL Central.
Care to give reasons to any of these e-pinions? Sure, the Tigers are young, but just counting them out in the middle of July is a little nuts. There is so much baseball still to play.
I worded that kinda funky, I said I would be surprised if they AREN'T in it in September. I am not counting them out but I don't think they will beat out both the Twins and The Sox. I will be most pleased if wrong.
They tend to lose to inferior teams and beat teams they should lose to. They almost always start off hot, and then cool down in the second half. I don't really know why, but someone needs to shake them out of it.
if the Tigers finish in 2nd or 3rd and miss out on the wild card, especially since they field the 5th youngest team in the majors, but I will be disappointed. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out, and they are only 1.5 GB and certainly should stay in the race in September and should have a good chance at the wild card if all goes well. Once the 3-4-5 begin to mesh and the starting rotation gets it together, the sky could be the limit for the 2010 Tigers as long as they are able to handle the grueling schedule, keep winning at Comerica, and improve their road woes. They are still a contender, but these things will determine whether the Tigers can be a success story or not. Hopefully Leyland can pull off something similar to first-half 2006 tirade jolt for the Tigers.
I'm sick of the Tigers. I don't know what needs to happen, but being swept by anyone (let alone the freaking Indians) is inexcusable. Leyland's magic may have run out last year...
Two things. Team still doesn't understand the concept of hitting with RISP. And Jim Leyland is not a clutch nail it down manager. I'd love it if he had Gardenhire's skills or Guillen's fire.
