His Dudeness

Knee jerk. He is our best offensive player. He fucked up. He has comparable numbers to A Rod at the same age. If we dump him because of this then we are not making our baseball team better.

Hmm... As, His Dudeness, says. I don't really agree with dumping him. All that does is give some other team an outstanding player for below market value. He'll play great for them for the next 15 years and all we will have is our moral high ground.

Cabrera's "Most Similar By Age" list on Baseball Reference: Ken Griffey (957) Hank Aaron (931) * Orlando Cepeda (927) * Frank Robinson (920) * Hal Trosky (901) Mickey Mantle (891) * Andruw Jones (888) Al Kaline (887) * Ruben Sierra (879) Albert Pujols (875) Yes, this is definitely a guy you want to trade away.

The problem is that he had a .26 BAC at 6am or 7am (the report doesn't say what time he was given a test, only that the cops showed up at 6am and released him at 7:30am -- the test was given somewhere in between). The body can only process alcohol so fast -- .015 per hour I believe. So if you start with a .26 at 6am or 7am and subtract .015 every hour he still had somewhere between a .065 and .08 BAC at 7pm, gametime. Personally, I'd rather not have my ballplayers borderline legally drunk right before an important game. But I guess "getting your drink on" is cool at all times, right?

Fraternization rules are old and outdated. As any amateur athlete who has competed against friends knows, it's all off once the game starts. If anything, you want to beat your friends more because of bragging rights. Maybe Cabrerra should say he was sacrificing himself to get the Sox drunk and gain a competitive advantage. I'm sure that would make a lot of people feel better.

The yankees should go back in time and dump Mickey Mantle, his hard partying lifestyle obviously will cause him not to live up to the hype. Note: Not saying Cabrera is going to be Mantle, and I'm not saying I'm not pissed that he was out til 6 AM the night before one of the biggest games of the season, but the idea that we should dump him after the seasons he has put up in detroit is ridiculous, even if him being out late with a .26 BAC is a regular occurrence.

Cabrera is obviously a young, rich guy who can still hit the ball a ton. I would prefer to not see him out until 6 am, but as long as he hits .300 with 30+ home runs all is good. Go Tigers

Umm... what the heck people. Dude went out drinking, came home smashed, and had a fight with his wife. If we dumped every person who'd ever done this from their job, EVERY MAN IN HISTORY would be unemployed.

Did he turn up in a hospital with severe alcohol poisoning? Did he vomit all over a bunch of police officers? If he were out all night, figure, 6 hours, and did indeed spend some time passed out at a bar somewhere, and was not eating nor had anything else to ramp up his metabolism, he would have done about 10 or 11 2 oz shots of 80 proof alcohol to get that drunk. I did worse than that in college and went to class at 9 AM.

The staying out late drinking and fighting with his wife is a personal issue, so as a fan I'd worry more about the part where he was partying the night before another game with opposing players during the most important series of the year. However, I have a feeling the team will address it since, ridiculously good of a player as he is, he's not the Barry Bonds type that the team is afraid of pissing off. They can't let their best hitter be a distraction in the middle of a playoff race, and I think they'll handle it.

Miggy is far and away our best player, and they couldn't get near full value for him if they traded him because of this. Even trading him under normal circumstances would be insane when he's under contract for awhile. Athletes go out and make mistakes, just like everyone else. Let those without sin cast the first stone, or something like that.

"Cabrera IMO should get dumped after the play-offs and traded away" Words can't describe how fucking stupid this idea is. Good god, I either want to hit you or cry.

Cabrera is the main reason the Tigers below average offense this season wasn't WAY below average. He is an awesome hitter (in my opinion, the 3rd best in the majors behind Pujols and Mauer). I don't care if he goes out with players of other teams after games and "fraternizes." That said, he went 0-11 with 12 men left on base in the last series of the year when the Tigers needed him most. He had some of the weakest swings I've seen him take all year. If the reason was he was too drunk/hangover to play at a high level, that's extremely disappointing. He gets paid enough money (eight-year, $153.3 mil extension) that he needs to play his best in all 162 games. And beyond the money, just making sure he's doing everything he can to help the Tigers win. If he wants to come out, look everyone in the eye, and say he prepared and gave his best those last three games, that would be good to see. But I doubt he could say that.

Don't forget he is still quite young. I would be more disappointed if it was Maggs or Polanco that did something like this. Luckily it seems that no one was seriously hurt from his stupid decisions. Let's hope that he learns from this and moves on. Even thinking about trading him for this is beyond stupid.

Guys, I'm not saying "can" him or trade him based on this incident. I'm just saying how very disappointing it is. It seems, based on these stories, he was not remotely prepared for a HUGE three-game series when, as everyone acknowledges, he's their best offensive player (by quite a bit). Also, I have a problem with "he's young." He's not a sophomore in college. This is his 7th full big league season. He's closer to 30 year old than he is to 20. He's a grown-man with grown-man responsibilities (to his employer, his team mates, his fans - and I'm leaving aside his family, which is a whole other discussion), and it shouldn't have to be said he should act like it.

And I think the issue is, on the biggest weekend of the season is it really the time to be partying until the early morning hours? (Keep in mind as well that the Tigers played a day game on Sunday.) I don't think it's too much to ask the guys to be all business when the whole season is on the line. Maybe it's Leyland we should wonder about. Is he running too loose of a ship?

Brendan

October 5th, 2009 at 12:36 PM ^

I wouldn't trade him or release him, but if I'm Leyland/Dombrowski I give him a strong talking to. Obviously a lot of MLB players get smashed before games on a regular basis. Heck, David Wells pitched a perfect game while he was hung over. At the same time, when your team is in the midst of historically choking away a playoff spot, you probably should take it easy on the boozing.

First off, clearly we need Cabrera if this team is going to do anything in the next couple of years and trading him would be foolish. However, this would incident was just idiotic. Coming home drunk at 5 AM, waking your daughter and then getting into a fight with your wife isn't the kind of story I want to hear about the best player on our team. But besides all that, am I the only person that finds it humorous that it was Dombrowski that came to pick him up?

Cabrera leads the team in every single significant offensive statistic. He's young, he does stupid shit. You can make a case for him as MVP (eventhough Joe Mauer should win it.) Would you rather have Brandon Inge as your four hitter?

What is this talk about trading him away? Damn man, we don't even know the details of the situation. If he did behave irresponsibly, I say perhaps bring him off the bench in the Tuesday game at most. Go Tigers.

he's like the robert lang of this message board. we couldn't get anything in return...we can only hope our GM doesn't offer him a contract when he's a FA and he goes and toils away in Montreal or something...
