SJU makes a free throw to go up two with 5 seconds left. Rutgers tries a hail-mary and SJU steals but the player travels and steps out of bounds with 1.5 seconds left and the officials walk off the court. Some of the worst officiating I've ever seen
OT- TERRIBLE CALL at SJU-Rutgers game
Watched this too. The refs just disappeared.
Was it a Bottlegate like situation? Fans throwing stuff, etc?
Over under for the gmae was 128.5 pts..
score was 65-63
There is absolutely no excuse for what happened here ...
Be great if the B1G decided to remove Burr and any other B1G ref that was a part of this from the B1G tournament. They failed and it potentially cost Rutgers a chance to move on.
Go Blue !
Unbelievable. That makes me sick.
Absolutely awful, should have at least reviewed it.
it was the refs swallowing their whistles. 2 fouls in the last 10 seconds that should have been called on St. Johns. Blatant in my eyes.
Jim Burr strikes again
That was a terrible ending all around. Tons of mistakes by both sides, then some disastrous reffing.
Mike Fransecsa is going crazy right now (he's actually as St.John's alum). How can the officials just leave the court before the game is done? He is trying to get the Big East Commissioner on the phone right now...
I've seen six people on Twitter comment on Francessa's reaction, so it must be epic. Wish I had YES so I could watch it.
Check him on the radio
I was listening online earlier today but stopped. I'm tuning back in now but I'm afraid it's gonna be too late. I love it when he goes off about something. I wouldn't doubt his ability to get the Big East commish on the phone with short notice either.
I do not think he noticed the end of it...He was so pissed off that no foul was called at the half court pass, I do not think he was paying attention to see the St. Johns player stepping out of bounce while traveling and then throwing it out of bounce before the buzzer went off...
His post game press conference is going to be must-see tv
Out of bounce? Like the ball was flat or something?
Agree 100%, unbelievable way to end a game (and a season for Rutgers trying to fight for postseason hopes), and the refs ran away like the cops were coming. That was inexplicably bad.
those referees should be FIRED RIGHT NOW...
I cannot believe what I just watched. How the over the back foul call with 5.5 seconds left was missed is bad enough...but these fucks not only missed that, but missed a player stepping out of bounce as he travels with 1.9 seconds left is a fucking disgrace. Not to mention he throws the ball into the stands BEFORE THE BUZZER GOES OFF...those three officials should be FIRED RIGHT NOW
If this happened to Michigan in basketball, my television would be broken.
out of "bounds". had to tell you because you did it multiple times in 2 different posts. not tryin to be a dbag
St. John's hasn't been relevant in forever. With NYC all buzzing about the Johnnies there's no way those refs were letting them lose in the first round at MSG.
i cant believe the refs just ran off the court like the game was over? ESPN showed the back of one of the refs disappearing up the tunnel how could they let that happen
The game is not officially over until the refs disappear from the view of the officials at the table. They run off just on the off chance that players do something flagarant. My brother, who refs high school in Michigan, told me a story of a time when the refs at a game stuck around, saw some really bad behavior and felt obliged to t someone up. They had to drag the other team out of the locker room to shoot. Because no one really wants that to happen, they get out of dodge as quickly as they can.
This of course doesn't justfiy the series of horrible calls. Even before the last second, there should have been a foul called at the other end on a rebound, and the Rutgers guard driving the basket was clearly fouled. The Big East has already admitted to the refs missing the travel and the clock. The Big East explained to Andy Katz, however, that neither of those were correctable under the rules.
But I figured it is also belong here:
It was so pathetic, that it was pretty funny. The Rutgers player was definitely fouled on his drive since that St. Johns defender didnt have his arms vertical and there was contact (although I can understand why no call was made).
Then on the miss of the FT, that was easier an over the back, and even if they did not call it, I am surprised the did not review the play to double check if it indeed was off Rutgers. I kind think the St. Johns guy got his hands on it and was the one to knock it out of bounds.
Finally the stepping out of bounds with that much time left in unexcusable, how this missed that is beyond me. The refs did not even talk about it, instead they just ran as fast as they could into the locker room.
All around it was: HALOL!
im glad the rest of the country gets to watch the big tens best. please get a new job.
Conspiracy theory that is totally unfounded: O/U 128.5.
Final score with debacle: St Johns 65 vs Rutgers 63. Total: 128.
Hmm...Tim Donaghy anyone?
Jim Burr is too dumb to figure out how to officiate a game, let alone remember numbers in his head to keep an accurate O/U. Donaghy, while being a douchebag, was at least a somewhat intelligent douchebag.
Hey, just a reminder, when the player threw the ball up in the stands with time still on the clock that is a TECHNICAL; just ask the male cheerleader at Louisville or coach Pitino. Some NCAA Rep. should step up and stop this from happening, it's never too late to fix the problem! Maybe they should never use the monitor in college basketball ever again.
Man I'm glad I'm not a Rutgers fan I would be so pissed right now
Rutgers Campus reports riots all over ! Man what a horrible call. Hope these douchebags don't call any games come tourney time.
Here's what I will never understand:
When something egregious happens in sports, and everyone knows it happened, and there's evidence, and it's obvious, and there's no doubt, and it's not in question, and...(you get the point)...why is it so impossible to simply go back to the moment the issue occurred and right the wrong?
Why can't the refs come back out on the court, set the clock to 1.7 seconds and give the ball to Rutgers?
Why can't they check the monitor replay (even in a safe place just to be sure) and verify that something ridiculous did not occur?
The most frustrating thing to me is not the bad call- it's the apparent willingness of everyone to accept it as something that cannot be changed. If the real goal of the officials is to ensure fairness, why in the world would they not be concerned enough to make sure they got it right? Again, bad calls are not the issue- that's human. But it's 'Get a Brain! Morans' stupid to see it, and then stand by it.
As Mike & Mike stated this morning, everyone acts like "them's the breaks" and oh well, crappy call but can't do anything about it.
WHY? Just imagine what it would be like if every other part of society abided by this type of mentality: Well sir, it's now known that you in fact did not commit that crime...but the trials already been held and you were found guilty soooo, I guess next time we'll have to try harder to get it right.
Maddening. Absolutely maddening.
Tim Higgins and Jim Burr are widely regarded in the Big East as terrible refs. It's amazing that they let the two call the same game - the first time I've ever seen that.
It goes beyond the missed calls at the end - look at the whole game - it was a litany of errors. Just in the last minute:
- Foul no-call on the Rutgers shot with under 10 seconds left.
- Push on the St. John's foul shot rebound which gave possession to SJU.
And there wasn't just two missed calls at the end, it was actually three:
- Traveling on the St. John's player.
- Out of bounds on the St. John's player.
- Technical foul for delay of the game on the St. John's player for throwing the ball that landed in the stands. (Remember the call on the Louisville cheerleader earlier this season? It wasn't illegal participation, it was delay of the game, which should be a strict call).
In the end, with 1.7 seconds, it should have been 2 shots for Rutgers and the ball.
Absolutely embarrassing, Burr and Higgins are years past needing to go.
