OT - So How is Your Summer Sports/Exercise Routine Going?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

There are a lot of jocks and quasi-jocks on this board, and with the beautiful Michigan weather having been here for 2 months, you've had time to get outdoors on some type of regular basis.   I know many of you are into your summer routines - golf leagues, softball, running, biking, etc.  Some will have various tournaments, races and championships to compete for.

So the question is:  How are you doing on your summer sport(s)?  Is your handicap or waistline going down?   Is your bench press or running pace getting stronger?   Any big races or matches you've had or are coming up?

Getting about 120 miles per week in in the bike right now. Training for a 70 mile ride in August that includes a 4000 ft. climb over 14 miles followed by a descent of the same amount of vertical. Lost 15 pounds since March and it has made a big difference. Colorado is a great place for all athletic pursuits.

Here's my excuse: I normally like to bike in the summer. But there's something in my town called sphecius speciosus, or the cicada killer wasp. It's like a hornet on steroids. They say it's not interested in stinging humans but I'm nonetheless terrified of it. It lives in a nest in the ground, and there are usually multiple nests near each other. Google it. It's like the great white shark of the insect world. Totally irrational, I know.

I can see how they are scary to be around, but honestly, they won't harm you.   They like dry, loose soil and will nest there. Had one right after we edged the driveway.

True story, we made it a sport to swat them with a badminton racket until they were all gone.  Then, at night, we put boiling water down the hole to finish off the larvae.

Image result for huge bee stinging person

as an aside, it is a blessing to live in farm country.  one of our neighbors does honey bees, i think they call bee keeping 'apiary'.  anyway, july 4th oldest son gets zapped by a couple of hornets in front of the house.  other children report similar stories the days before.  a call to the neighbor brings him over in full bee suit.  finds the hornets nest.  no more hornets.

One upside of my introduction to the cicada killers is that I am now no longer afraid of smaller wasps and bees (at least like I used to be). I was stung a few times as a kid, and I never really got over it, but now I can tolerate when a bee is around me. Probably not 500 bees.

Very good. I took up running in May and combined with paying more attention to my diet I'm down 30 lbs since January. From 215 to 185 now. Would like to drop about another 15 total.

Ever since I turned 37 I keep getting injured. Three setbacks all within a year. Normally I try to do P90X in the winter and run in the summer but have been sidelined so much that I can't stay in shape. Getting old sucks.

Training for my first marathon, 18 mile run on tap for this weekend.  I try to hit the road as early as possible but inevitably the sun/heat/humidity break through in the last couple miles.

I had a wreck during a triathlon last year, in which I broke my orbital socket in three places, had a TBI, and a concussion (I don't recommend this). On doctor's orders, I couldn't ride my bike on the road or compete for a year.

Started training for a sprint tri in April. I'm an experienced and (relatively) fast runner, have a decent swim, but my bike stinks. Hired a coach. I've been cleared to ride on the road for about 45 days now. I've seen marked improvement. My first race is on Sunday - will see what kind of improvement in all three disciplines I've made.

So part of my wife's & my plans for moving to a property with 11 acres was all the physical work it would require to keep the place in shape.  I've dropped seven pounds in the last three months & am building muscle at the same time.  Amazing what chopping down trees and splitting firewood can do!  Now I feel almost an addition of having to go out and split firewood every day.

My softball season is wrapping up and we had a somewhat disappointing season. My golf game is pretty hit or miss, and I keep injuring my hip flexor region. I can't lose any weight to save my life, and I need to drop 25-30. Once I turned 35, things started breaking down. Can't imagine once I cross 40.

I actually find it harder to work out in the summer, with this crazy heat. I get lightheaded very easily. Thought I was just dehydrated but I'm chugging water like it's my job and nothing changes. Can't wait for the fall and cooler weather (and football)

Poorly. My new job only leaves time for me to run in the morning. I hate running in the morning.

Between that and a broken toe in February (which pretty much reset my fitness entirely), I managed to post two personal worst times in half marathons.

I'm going to attemp a whole 30 in august to see if that can move the weight to a point where I want to race again.

Well I'm working out > 0 days a week so it could be worse. Between grad school, a busy job, and relocating I just haven't had much time. Hopefully it slows down a little next semester.

This seems as good as any to post this. My brother and I are running an 8k Battlefrog race in Detroit August 28th and we are wondering if any Mgobloggers would be interested in joining our team? If you're interested just reply to this comment and I'll let you know the team name.

I've been running pretty regularly this summer.  4 mile race last Sat was slower average/mile than some I've done, but with the temps and humidity I was pretty happy with the time.  I'm trying to do one race a month to keep the motivation up a little.  I have 2 5Ks in August - 1 in my hometown in MI and the other here in NYC.

Started the exercise routine in 2013 and lost nearly 30 lbs; was maintaining that pretty well until sometime this past fall/winter, and it's been ticking down to about a 20lbs from highest weight recently.  So I'm back to monitoring diet a little closer for the moment (and have pretty quickly dropped close to 5 lbs with relatively little effort).

about a year ago. D1 sports and get great workouts in on a regular basis. Loosing some weight while putting on some muscle and getting stronger. Looking forward to doing a maniac race in a couple of weeks and think I'm in good enough shape that it shouldn't be too tough.

is about the same.  A number of birdies, a couple almost holes-in-one.  Shoot ~88 on average so the same as always.

I have dropped ~10 lbs in the last month by simply working out a couple nights a week and not eating until "stuffed" but eating until not hungry.  Not trying to lose weight really but I quit smoking and decided to get a bit healthier overall.

Used to be a big runner, but let it go my last few years of college. Just graduated this past spring and work doesn't start till August, so I've been really trying to get back into running shape (as well as continue regular working out) before things get busy again.

Signed up for a half marathon in mid-August. Training went really well for June, then I had a week where I pulled a muscle and got sick, so kinda got derailed a bit, but now I'm back to keeping to my schedule and hopefully should be good with one month left to train (up to doing 7-8 miles comfortably, so not too far off from 13.1)!

This is a cool OT topic.

Great. Play soccer 2 nights a week and run when I can...we've been trying to get a ball hockey league going on Sunday mornings tho and people have been very non-committal....

Did 3 miles saturday and yesterday. Trying to get up to about 10 miles a week consistently. Wife and I signed up for the BTN 10K here in Chicago, but may end up running the 5 (which we can do!). Going to do a half marathon in Feb (my 2nd, her first) so got to keep up with the training.

I'm down about 10lbs, have 15 to go.

Terrible, thanks for asking. I've been working on my eating habits and trying to get exercise regularly. It seems like nothing I do really works. I even had my thyroid checked to see if there was anything wrong there. Nope. I'm fighting a little family history. My mom's side is a little bigger framed (not excessively), but it seems like no matter what I do, I still can't get my weight down. I'm really frustrated. It doesn't help that I'm classified as obese when no one sees me that way. I'm 6ft and 235. My deal is I carry it everywhere, not just in my stomach. I'm open to suggestions.

I have crushed workouts for an entire summer and not dropped a pound since I wasn't eating right. I've lost 26lbs in 3 months by simply being really strict about my diet and only exercising maybe once a week. Everyone is different but for me it all starts with what I eat. full disclosure: both these examples happened in past summers. I am currently fat and out of shape.

Hire a diet/nutritional coach. Don't buy into fads. I was a fat 260lbs at 25. Currently i'm 220 @ 7%bf. Anyone can do it, it's just knowing the right formula. I'm to the point where I'm super structured. I cook and measure all my meals. I eat 7x a day. The structure and preparation make it a lot easier not to mess up.

Depends on what you want, if you just want a diet plan, probably $100 for 2-3 months. The full on coaching which includes daily/weekly meal and workout adjustments cost me 175 a month. There's also a lot of good info on bodybuilding.com. There's a lot of good starting templates to try.
