OT: Singers or Bands That Define a Decade

Submitted by mGrowOld on

Happy Sunday everyone.  Kinda of a slow morning what with Harbaugh not able to land any new commitments in the past several hours (slacker) and no new developments on the completely idiotic VERY IMPORTANT subject of air pressure in footballs so I thought I'd pose a question to the board.

If I was to play word association with you on which singer or band immediately comes to mind for a particular decade what would you say?  For me the 50's - 80's is pretty easy but then in the 90's and beyond it becomes a bit harder to just pick one.  Here is my list - what's yours look like?

1950's - Elvis

1960's - The Beatles

1970's - The Bee Gees

1980s -  Michael Jackson

1990's - Nirvana (small portfolio-big impact)

2000's - Eminem

2010's - Kanye West, Rihanna, Katy Perry?                                          (This decade has me stumped)

I know. I know. I know. I dropped the "/s" before I posted.

Despite the admitted "Played Out" status for "Rick Roll'd," it's still somewhat surprising to me that the YouTube clip shows over 102,000,000 views (though most most of those views probably have lasted less than three seconds.) Has there been another YouTube clip that has been credited for starting the concept of annoying internet memes?

Tupac and Biggie were big but not like on par with bands that have lasted for decades dude!

You could easily say Depeche Mode was one of the most influential and popular bands of the 80's and 90's hands down. Still the only band to sell out the Rose Biwl for 6 plus shows in less then 10 minutes. 100 thousand plus. Same as when they did Dodger stadium (sold all dates in Les then 10 minutes)

It all depends what you listen to. For me, late 90's and 2000's was all about KoRn and the new hard rock. Heck, I still like Hard Rock better than 90% of what is on radio stations now. I wish Sirius wasn't such a mess of a company, cuz I love listening to Octane.

Bee Gees? Are you f'ing kidding me. They only became popular because of a disco movie. Zeppelin not only was the most popular but their music has transended generations and has been a major influence ever since. Dont forget 1950s: Sinatra

Just to be clear I wasnt asking which was YOUR favorite band of the decade - my question was more "if you asked 100 random on the street to name the one singer or band that immediately comes to mind when I mention this decade who would it be."

Personally I'm no big fan of the Bee Gees - they are just the poster child for everything 70's to me.  My favorite 70's band?  Supertramp or Nazereth believe it or not.

How can you just put one name for the 80s?  That decade had more genres of music than I think we will ever see at any one time again and a lot of it was revolutionary.  The 80s had this alone:

Pop - Madonna

New Wave - Duran Duran

Hair Bands - Bon Jovi

Metal - Metallica

Glam - Posion

Alternative - R.E.M.

All of those artists, like em or hate em, changed the music landscape at the time and it all occurred within a few years of one another.  You just cannot say one thing for the 80s.

I did...

and for the 80s, while we're talking about revolutionary; meaning artists who influenced so many others, I'd go with Run DMC for rap in the 80s

If you're defining this gig by 'influence', it's about time Hendrix showed up.  He was and remains the standard.  Other influences:

40s - Muddy Waters - brought electricity and stage presence to the blues, also Howling Wolf

50s - Chuck Berry brought black blues licks to a bunch of white folk.  Buddy Holly showed them all that they could be goofy lookingl, but still get girls through rock and roll.  He also showed them that you could write, produce, and perform your own music

60s - Dylan was a poet, but Hendrix and Eric Clapton (Cream) played the rock and roll that electrified guitarists.

70s - Jeff Beck was there first (Truth) was there before Jimmy Page, but I like Zep.  Too bad The Allman Brothers don't get mentioned here, too.

80s - Generally speaking, not as strong as the other decades, but the Clash, Talking Heads, and how can you leave out Tupac and NWA?

90s - Radiohead, Nirvana/PJ, Metallica

00s - I liked Porcupine Tree, but what the fuck to I know?  I'm too old for this shit...

00s - Dre, The Killers, Flogging Molly, Eminem

10s - Boxelder, INS

tickets just went on sale at Royal Oak music theater for  Noel Gallagher's FLying Birds. They toured in the UK with Jake Bugg, so he may have a decent warm up as well.

I'm reminded today how underrated Iron Maiden is. Their albums in the early 80's (Number of the Beast!! Iron Maiden, Killers, Powerslave, Piece of Mind, Somewhere in time) are incredible. And (unless I missed it) nobody even mentions them? Are you kidding me??? C'mon man. Number of the Beast if the best Album of the 80's. There I said it!!

To me, that means that the decade is best known for this band and the band is a total reflection of the culture of its time.

40 - Glenn Miller
50s - The King, Elvis.
60 - Bob Dylan, Beatles, Stones
70 - Led Zeppelin
80 - the hardest to define because of the diversity.

Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Men at Work, Bon Jovi. Pick one.

90s - Nirvana
2000 - Eminem or Green Day

2010 - not really sure. One Direction?

Anyway. Just my opinion.

with the possible exception of U2 or one of the Seattle bands in the 80s.  However, as far as staying power, I'd say the Stones and Aerosmith are still solid plays on every jukebox in every gin joint around the world. I know. I've been to lots of them.

On a side note, Frankie Valley(ie?) and the four seasons in the early 70s had sold more than anyone, including both Elvis, Beatles and BeeGees. The BeeGees were solid in the late 60s but their disco shit was just that.

First to come to mind for each decade...

1950s: Chuck Berry

1960s: Rolling Stones

1970s: Led Zeppelin

1980s: Van Halen

1990s: Pearl Jam

2000s: Nickelback (because the 2000s were awful)

2010s: Dawes
