OT - Sadler fired from Nebraska
Didn't see this posted already, but according to sources, Nebraska has just canned Doc Sadler after a horrible, yet somewhat expected, 4-14 conference record in their Big Ten inagural year. Lot's of cleaning house in B1G basketball today...
Did anyone even know the name of Nebraska's b-ball coach before the news of his firing?
I first thought this was news about Adam Sandler.
he got fired too.
Wouldn't that be sweet...
Sandler is beginning to be alot like George Lucas so young and talented but now just "old" and trying to recapture the magic.
...had the exact same thought...I couldn't have named him
He never stood a chance. Nebraska basketball has never been good. The switch to the B1G has only made it tougher for them.
saying that they are building a state-of-the-art new practice facility and arena for hoop in Lincoln, so they may be looking for a higher-profile coach, too. Odds are they become more competitive.

for a hockey school.
Heh, I just posted similar news to the Bruce Weber thread. I thought I was the only one who cared. Looking forward to the day when we all have a reason to care about Husker basketball.
Anyway, the press conference is on BTN's website right now (4:30 EST).
I thought Doc was the Celtics coach....

He seemed like a likeable and good coach (for Nebraska at least). I'm not sure what they were expecting coming into the Big 10. The fact they won FOUR games I thought was a testament to him, not necessarily their talent. Oh well.
shaka smart might end up in illinois. nebraska can't pull in anyone that good.
First Bruce Weber and now Doc Sadler....
I must say, I am not sure what Nebraska expected in basketball when they switched to the Big Ten. They weren't exactly kicking butt in the Big 12, and this first year in the Big Ten, they've done even less of that. It may take more than someone like Doc Sadler (who actually seemed like a decent fit there) to fix that program and make it relevant, but I rather feel sorry for the guy because conference switch, at least to me, made it "apples and oranges" in terms of performance even if it wasn't so great to begin with.
They're gonna have to reach into the literally ones of NBA stars from NE in order to bring excitement to Lincoln. How 'bout the Polish Rifle?
I have a friend - pretty good basketball player - from NE who played against the Polish Rifle. He said he was off-the-charts good, which tells you how good the NBA is given that the PR barely played when he was in the league.
This is a new building firing. As in, Nebraska's opening a new building next year and they're worried about selling seats, wo they're looking to create a sense of hope by bringing in someone new.
It's hard to see who they're going to get who can do that, though. Anyone up and coming is not going to be dumb enough to take that job. Anyone who's not won't meet the criteria as "more exciting than Sadler." This seems like little more than a change for change's sake, whereas the Weber firing, you can legitimately argue he was in over his head.
What did Nebraska expect? First year in the conference is tough enough, but when you consider that the B1G was easily the best conference in basketball this season, this was definitely the expected outcome
enough about Cornhusker basketball, but I didn't think they were so great in the Big 12 that they should be expecting much more than what happened in year one of the Big Ten. Maybe he derserved more than just one year after coming into a new conference. I also have no idea what his record is, or how many years he has been there. But they have some talent from the few games I did catch of them.
Nebraska has a basketball team, too? Huh.
That is all.
The poor guy was used to having games called in the Big 12 style and then got thrown into the crap storm that is Big Ten-style officiating.
While I don't doubt Tom Osbourne knows what he is doing, it seems like this jump is a quick decision. the Big 12 is not the worst of NCAA basketball scene, but really how could Nebraska expect their team to do in their first season? Maybe they can go out and get someone better now that they are in the BIg 10 and try to improve facilities to attract recruits. But really who would want to go to Nebraska to play bball when you have Kansas or Missouri in your backyard? They will need to up their game in order to compete.
but if they have some shiny new facilities and are willing to pay, plus have the new Big Ten affiliation to offer, they could conceivably bring in someone worth getting excited about.
I have no idea who this person might be, but that description sounds better than most of the inevitable job openings this spring.
And the announcers mentioned Alford as someone that Nebraska might be interested in, but I feel like if he really wanted to move back in to a power conference he could find a better spot.
