This situation is really crazy for me to wrap my head around.  I work in oncology and small-cell lung cancer is an extremely debilitating disease.  However, in the (almost 15) years I've been doing this work I NEVER can recall a patient being this young with this diagnosis.  We see a lot of people in the 50-60 year-old age group.  Very unfortunate for him and may he RIP.

Absolutely.  It is not only associated with people who smoke but who are heavy smokers (1-3 packs/day).  However, and I'm only going to give an anecdotal response, we generally see it in patients ages early 50's to early 70's.  Other lung cancers which often have some sort of genetic mutation attached to them (ALK+) are seen in younger people but they have more treatable options.  Small-cell essentially has 1 regimen and people usually respond well initially but then it re-occurs with fury and life-expectancy is short.  The fact that he was diagnosed at a young age and deteriorated so quickly (per media reports) is just very surprising to me

Lost my mom to the same cancer last Tuesday.  She was officially diagnosed on December 14 and I’m in shock how quickly everything happened.  It’s a brutal disease.

My mom was the one who taught me to be a crazy Michigan fan. No one loved Michigan more than my mom.  I like to imagine she’s up giving Bo an earful right now.

My sincerest condolences, Rosie?.

My Mom was also a big Meeeechigan fan and always had the game on the radio every Saturday afternoon during my childhood. She is a huge part of my fandom for UM athletics these past 55 years. The last conversation I had with her, she insisted I go the OSU game on Saturday because it was Bo's last home game. I told her I would watch it with her in her hospital room. She passed away that night, her funeral was that Saturday. Cancer sucks!!!

So young.  So quick.  So sad.

Although I was not a fan of "Saved By The Bell" at all, seeing anyone, especially someone near your own age pass away suddenly and tragically like this is always a bit jarring, to say the least. I believe he was diagnosed not all that long ago too, which makes this even more tragic in a way.

Ya'll ever think about how you're just gonna be dead at some point?  I mean really think about it.  Not the passing "yeah that sucks" type of thought or pondering the abstract idea of it before being absorbed by the daily minutia. Really think about the fear, the pain, the possible suddenness of it. How either your loved ones will be left behind or they will leave you behind. Those are the only options.  How everyone will be sad, but then move on without out you.  Your spark or whatever that constant state of being is will be no more.  Just gone.  Years of development and refining and growing gone in an instant.  in two or three generations no one will ever think about you or know who you were.  Can you name your great-great grand-parents or beyond?  Sure, life is a gift and precious and worth living, until it's not.  You can stave off the inevitable with religion or faith, but the end is guaranteed. Then there's the suffering, the being old. The everyone seeing you as "old" and less valuable to society.  No potential.  Is bringing life into this earth a curse? If you do they have no choice but to participate in this ordeal. Maybe there's beauty in all of it somewhere, but it's hard to see sometimes. The precious time we do have in health and with loved ones is often spent concerning ourselves with pointless and tedious matters. Am I wrong? What is a koala to do?

I am not wrong. I really believe that if you read it, focus and digest it, you will see what I mean. You can do it on audio book in about 72 hours. Do an hour a day and you will done by Spring. It will change everything for you. I was an addict and a person with no real understanding of God, until I took the time to read it.
