OT: RIP Prince

Submitted by 901 P on

As a Minnesotan and someone who came of age during the 1980s, this is pretty shocking. Prince was incredibly prolific and he's responsible for some of the most popular and most acclaimed music of the past 40 years. RIP purple one.

Another rock icon passes in 2016. Prince was one of a kind. On another note, I'm slightly ashamed of the fact that I've been receiving a larger percentage of breaking news from MGoBlog than I probably should be.

Still the most unstoppable play in basketball. In all seriousness, tremendous talent and I regret not getting to see him at the FOX when he did his surprise show. Been on the bucket list to see him for a while. RIP.

Prince has some excellent tracks for sure. He did a great job at the Super Bowl in 2007.

I never fully appreciated either Prince or Micheal Jackson in their heyday, but I crank up the volume when I hear thier stuff now.  This bothers me more than Bowie's death did.  A bit shocking at his young age, and terribly sad...

I just saw the confirming tweets come across my feed a little bit ago, and now of course the entire office is talking about it - I suspect not much more in the way of meaningful work may get done for a little bit anyway. Still, very sad news indeed - I can remember growing up with Prince all over MTV and the radio and indeed cranking up Prince whenever one of his songs was playing. A legend is gone indeed.

But in the words of Peppers: "Real know real". Prince had undeniable talent. He transformed music, was constantly original and worked hard even up until recently to make new, fresh music. Hearing some of his recent music on NPR about a year ago, it was interesting to hear just how much thought went into it, even though it was very different than what he became famous doing.

RIP Prince. And thank you for also providing us what was the greatest of the Chappelle Show stories.

Yes--definitely worth a listen. In fact, that's what I was listening to at work today when I first heard the reports of a medical examiner at Paisley Park. Even before it was offiically confirmed the tone of the DJs made me suspect that it was in fact Prince who had died.

And I should add: the Current is a great station. Listen today for their coverage of Prince, but listen any time for great music.

I saw Purple Rain in the theater in high school. It was life changing: we had never seen anything like it.

As someone else said, seeing him live was on the bucket list. Truly regretful now. It's great so many MGoBloggers did get to see him live. Thanks for sharing your memories today.

My brother saw him live in Minneapolis many years ago. After the show, he came on stage and told everyone to come to Paisley Park. My brother did and, sure enough, they let in everyone that they could and he just played for them there.

Saw the purple rain tour at Joe Louis arena in 1984. Appreciate this fine and quirky music innovator. God bless and RIP.

I always thought it was odd that one of the most iconic pop-rock artists from the late 70s through the 80s was a kid from Minneapolis (like the other unlikely music icon who preceded him, Bob Dylan).  That he stayed true to his Minnesota roots and lived out his life in his hometown until his premature demise was testament to his affection for the Twin Cities and its awesome provincial culture and people.

And he is flat-out adored in the Twin Cities. I'm a Mineapolis native but have been gone for about 20 years. My Facebook feed is jam packed with tributes, links to old videos, and statements of heartfelt sadness. I'm sure other people are seeing those things too, but if you know a lot of Minneapolitans you'll really get a sense of what he meant to the city.

we are gathered here today...to get through this thing called life...electric word, life... it means forever, and that's a mighty long time...but I'm here to tell you...there's something else...the afterworld... a world of never-ending happiness...where you can always see the sun, day or night....

Apparently he has been fighting a nasty flu for a while I read a news report he had to go to the hospital about a week ago.

2016 seems to be a notable year for cultural icon deaths.

RIP Prince - listened to & danced to alot of his music back in my dating days.

didn't like Prince initially. . .

Once I realized that girls were 216% more likely to have sex with you if Prince was playing,

I got kicked out of a house party (on Tappan Ave, I think) for demanding, too often & too loudly, that more Prince songs be played for us to dance to.

I don't regret it.

This is definitely the biggest "celebrity loss" ever for me because I'm bigger fan of Prince than any other artist or athlete.

When Bowied died earlier this year I made a playlists of all my favorite songs of his and listened to it for a couple weeks. Then I thought ... "you know what, I'm going to do the same for Prince ... I haven't listened to his stuff for a while and I don't want to experience his music again only because he passed. I want to enjoy it now and more often."

So I've been listening to Prince music quite a bit lately, already. I will continue to do so ... and the nice thing about it is that he has so much great music you can literally go a few days without hearing the same song twice.

I always thought it would be strange to ever see Prince get old. It seems like he probably would have remained looking like his famous passport photo for another 25 years, he didn't see to have aged a day since '79.

As an 80's baby (born in 1984), I have fond memories as a young kid watching Purple Rain on VHS, in particular that lakefront scene motorcycle scene with Apollonia...OMG (see official trailer below).

Vanity, the Prince protege who was originally cast to play the part of Apollonia in the movie, also passed away at the age of 57 a couple months ago. RIP.

the Purple Pain.

It's such a shame our friendship had to end

Purple pain, purple pain.

Little Red Corvette may be the first song where I listened to it and thought this is the greatest song ever. (That was soon followed by Tom Sawyer.) I was 12 at the time it came out. Many have followed, but there will always only be one first "greatest song ever."

Friends and I tried to sneak into Purple Rain with some girls when we were 14. We didn't really care about the movie, just that the girls wanted to see it. An usher busted us and made us watch the movie we paid for, The Philadelphia Experiment, not to be confused (which I often do) with the movie, "Philadelphia" starring Tom Hanks that was released years later.
