OT: Purdue Basketball 2014-2015

Submitted by Padog on

Let me preface this by saying that this is my first thread here and it would be nice if you guys take it easy on me. I have always been interested in statistics and putting together previews of certain teams. I got the idea to go through an early preview of the B1G teams. So, here goes it.

The Purdue basketball team has suffered through an awful year in which they finished last in the B1G. The team lost seniors Terone Johnson (#0), Errick Peck (#32), Sterling Carter (#1), and Travis Carroll (#50). Not only did they lose these four core seniors, but they also lost Terone's younger brother Ronnie Johnson who is transferring. In addition, Jay Simpson unfortunately has suffered a career ending heart condition and will not be playing. Between these six players they are losing 55% of their minutes and 52% of their points. So here is the projected roster for next season:

Number  Name                   HT             WT          YR         POS

30      Neal Beshears          6-7            198       SR.           SF

Has only played in 26 games in his 3 years, most likely will continue on that path.

11      Stephen Toyra          6-3            177       JR.           SG

Kind of the same deal, only played in 19 games in his two years.

2        Jon McKeeman         6-1             180        JR.          PG

Even more of a scrub, 6 games, 2 years.

*20     A.J. Hammons          7-0             251         JR.         C

Hammons is one of the biggest headcases in college basketball. When trying, he is a dominant force, when careless, he is a foul and turnover machine. Could go pro this year, but not likely. Has averaged 10.7 points and 6.7 rebounds over his career. Starting Center.

*35     Rapheal Davis          6-5             211         JR.       SG

Davis will most likely be the starting two guard or three. He has averaged 5.8 points and 3.8 rebounds over his career. He is and most likely will continue to be just an average player.

*21     Kendall Stephens     6-6             193          SO.       SG

Stephens is "just a shooter". He will most likely continue this. Because of his game he might play the 2 on offense and the 3 on defense. Stephens will most likely make a jump and add to his 8 points per game. May have to come off the bench.

*5       Basil Smotherman    6-5           222           SO.       SF

Basil Smotherman, a candidate for name of the year, will continue his starting ways. He will look to add to his 5 points per game.

*12     Bryson Scott            6-1           201           SO.       PG

Bryson Scott will most likely get the nod at the Point. He only started two games last year and his A:TO is not very good, but he can make a Freshman jump.

24      Anfernee Brown        6-1           190            SO.       PG

Will not play.

44      Isaac Haas                7-2           275           FR.       C

Thier highest touted recruit, a 7-2 center is a rare commodity and he may get some meaningful minutes. 4 star on rivals.

4        Vince Edwards          6-7           205           FR.        SF

Another freshman that may get some important minutes, no more than any other established forwards, as there are plenty on the team.

23      Jacquill Taylor           6-9            215            FR.      PF

May get some minutes.

31      Dakota Mathias         6-4           190            FR.       SG

Possibilty for him to get some good minutes, relies on whether or not Eron Harris transfers. Although Harris does not play the same position, he would take up valuable minutes.

3        P.J. Thompson          5-10           155             FR.     PG

Redshirt

Projected Starting Lineup:

Point Guard: Bryson Scott
Shooting Guard: Rapheal Davis
Small Forward: Kendall Stephens
Power Forward: Basil Smotherman
Center: A.J. Hammons

My projection is that Purdue will actually get worse, if that is at all possible. They lose a lot of leadership, if they had any. They also lose a lot of points and that is hard to fix. However, in a few years they may surprise some people. I will say they go 4-14 in the conference season and fight with Rutgers for worst team in the league.

Thank you guys for reading if you did, and I am open any criticism you guys give me. If you think I should keep going, I will most likely working up from the worst teams to the best. If I should stop and save my time, tell me. Go Blue!

Since this is your first time ill give it a pass but this would be off topic OT. Plus i dont think anyone really cares about Purdue they arent a rival or a real threat at this time. With that said i agree cant see how Painter is still the HC. The program is going nowhere

Actually if u do this for every BT team i think people would appreciate it. U can just skip Rutgers, Penn st, and NW no reason to waste your time

I liked it.  Why don't you post this in the Diaries though instead of the forum and that way you can build them one by one.  I think if you're going to these - do them all (maybe in reverse order of how YOU think they'll finish in the B1G) as it will be a nice reference point to the league next year.

I say good job and better than the vast majority of first posts (mine included).  You provided actual content and obviously put some thought and work into the post.  I look forward to seeing your next one.

At this point you cant move it but a mod can.  If you go to "moderator action sticky" (found under mgoboard) you can post a request to have it moved.  In the future you simply select Diary instead of Forum post when you start to create new content and it will automatically go there.

I like what you've done here.  I think it's helpful to be able to know what's coming.  My thought to improve upon it would be to give a projected starting line-up.  It looks like you listed them by class, but it would be useful to see who you think will get the most PT.  Thanks for putting this together.

Good, content-rich first post!  Take some of the tips that folks above have given and keep working at it!  This is the kind of thing that I at least appreciate reading here - people providing some information & analysis that I'm not going to necessarily know about on my own, but that deepens my knowledge of the game/the teams.

Assuming that Dawson stays and Harris leaves, on paper this coming year's State team will be the worst (from a rivals ratings and experience standpoint) since the modern era of recruiting sites(turn of the century). With Izzo reaching for 3* recruits these days, and the NCAA taking steps to weed out thug ball, I don't see much help on the horizon for them either. Just FYI You're looking at Dawson as a 5* senior, Valentine and the gimp as 4* juniors, and that 4* freshman point guard who can't shoot coming in. That's it. To view the overall decline in Izzo's recruiting: 2002: 5* 3: 4* 5* 4: 4* 5* 5: bupkis 6: 4* 4* 7: 4* 4* 4* 8: 4* 5* 9: 4* 4* 10: 4* 5 * 11: 5* 12: 5*(Harris) 4* 4* 13: bupkis 14: 4* If you add up the stars for each year's roster and bump each player up for every year of experience, you come up with a score of 24 for next year. The next lowest would be the 32 and 28 from 2005 and 2006, years where MSU scraped into the tournament .500 in conference and got bounced the first weekend. Those teams were one or two 4* players better. For reference, 2009's final 4 team weighed in at a 51.

Dakota Mathias will not redshirt, he will get some major playing time. the kids is very under rated, very hard work ethic. I know him and his family  personally(from the same town). I am not saying that because of the formentioned statement, but to watch the kid in the summer, reminds me of our #1 guy Stauskas. Do wish him the best, until he play us.

I've seen him play a few times myself. The kid is a hard worker and great shooter so he should get playing time as a freshman. However, I don't think he is anywhere near as athletic as Stauskas. Stauskas will dunk on someone off the dribble. I don't think I've ever seen Mathias dunk in a game let alone contested.

I really do wish the kid nothing but the best at Purdue, though. Except, of course, when he plays the good guys.

I think he was on the verge of having Michigan enter the recruiting picture when he committed to Purdue.  He would have been a great fit in Belein's offense with his high IQ and shot making ability, personally I think the Boilers stole one.  There's a reason why Huggins, Painter, and Dawkins were after him.

IMO probably low end of the spectrum but not a bad starting point.  He brings an extremely high basketball IQ, good court vision, and the ability to score...he will have to adjust to the speed/physicality of the college game.  His biggest challenge will be defensively, if he figures that out I can see him 20+ minutes a game as a freshman.  Only time will tell...

ps.  what you wrote was as readable as most everything else on this blog, so you have that going for you...

Not saying you will be completely wrong but did we all expect Nik and Caris to be as good as they are this year? Completely dismissing Purdue players seems irrational. They may gain 27 pounds or become way better shooters.

Is a good dude but they won't put up with another year like 2013-14 in West Lafayette. The whole state of Indiana collegiate basketball is crumbling right before our very eyes. Anymore prep kids to send our way??? :)

I wonder if they would try the Twin Towers lineup with Hammons (7' 0") and Haas (7' 2") at times.  That would be something.  And why not; what do they have to lose.

I also wonder if Painter is still safe.
