OT - Pryor apolgizes for actions while at OSU

Submitted by AFWolverine on

I'm not a fan of Terrelle Pryor, just as much as the next guy, but he has spoken out with some very similar sentiments to many of the board posters here in regards to collegiate athlete compensation. He also took the time to apologize for breaking NCAA rules while at OSU, FWIW. Link to ESPN story.

Honestly, Ohio fans should be thanking Terrelle Pryor. His willingness to keep his mouth shut, bite the bullet and leave when he did instead of speaking out saved them from much more severe sanctions than the wrist-slap they got. It's quite clear that the NCAA just scratched the surface of what had gone on there and had Terrelle said everything, they are likely still on a bowl ban and there's no way Urban would've become their coach.

you had the tat guys ego wouldn't speak due to being fans and another (think the autograph guy) stating he wouldn't speak for "fear of his life". Even if not serious he's alluding to what he feared the fans reason would be toward him. They were four people taking away from SO MUCH worse.

I'm sorry but it's laughable that you think they would've ever actually faced any serious sanctions. Are forgetting that the NCAA doesn't actually want to punish the teams that make them money? It was going to be a slap on the wrist whether or not anyone snitched. I'm sure Emmert had assured his old roommate Gee of that.

That's one way to describe it.

I don't think helping my mother, who was in need, is being in trouble.

Nothing says helping your needy mother like getting a shit-ton of tattoos

My thoughts exactly.  Here is the full quote:

"It was a rule, I broke it and I was wrong for that," Pryor said of his NCAA violations. "At the time, I was getting in trouble -- and I don't even call it being in trouble. I don't think helping my mother, who was in need, is being in trouble. I'll never regret that. The only thing I regret is hurting certain fans, teammates and coaches."

That's not even really an apology.  That's more of a "I'm not sorry I did it, I just sorry I got caught."

I am firmly in the camp that thinks athletes should be compensated and free to make money from endorsements and the whole nine, so I don't consider it a huge moral transgression to accept free tattoos and sports cars from boosters.  But don't say it was to help out your freaking mother.

I'm sure when he was taking out a string of nice loaner cars (from boosters if memory serves), he was thinking about his mom the whole time.
I think there is room to be sympathetic to athletes playing in an "amateur" system many on here don't believe in while still rolling your eyes at Pryor's self-serving faux apology.

My middle school sense of humor agrees with TPeezy's quote here:

"The only thing I will say about that is when I was at Ohio State, all you see is red jerseys in the stands and you see a lot of No. 2s. I'll leave it at that."

Unless he is paying back money from the illegal benefits, I'm not sure I believe the apology. It's like a kid apologizing for stealing some cookies from the cookie jar a few years later knowing his mom won't ask for the cookies back.

Hate to say it but I'm kind of impressed. Coming from him, his observations on football classes and their affects might help some kids.. I don't know.

I dislike Pryor as much as the next guy but a college kid getting free stuff is not a big deal to me. Holier than thou Tressel and the other adults involved should be the ones apologizing for lying and putting all this on college kids

That's the least he could do. Say what you will about Jim Tressell (and I know we all have lots to say), but the fact is this little brat cost a talented coach his career and deprived college football of one of its best.

Oh come on. Tressel was a well-known sleaze before he ever came to OSU. I remember the concern when he was hired, not just over his talent as a coach, but also over the fact that he would break the hell out of the rules in order to win. Also, check out the 30-for-30 'Youngstown Boys.' He was bound to go down for something like that eventually.

Good.  I never liked him due to some of his off-the-field antics, but admitting he screwed up and broke some (admittedly dumb and misguided) rules is a step in the right direction.

He doesn't need to apologize.  He was just doing what everyone else now thinks is reasonable.  Time changes your perspective.  As far as Tressel is concerned, well I still think he's slimey.
