OT-People will come.
They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you have a look around," you'll say. "It's only twenty dollars per person." They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it; for it is money they have and peace they lack.
And they'll walk out to the bleachers, and sit in shirt-sleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces.
People will come.
The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again. Oh, people will come. People will most definitely come.

All things are still equal in baseball, so here's to a great year. Bless you boys, and Go Tigers!
Agreed. If opening day could move to Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, I'd be much more ready for it.
I agree. Like basketball before the end of bowl season, its very difficult to get into baseball until the NCAA tournament is over. My simple sports brain can only focus on one sport at a time.
For, lo, the winter is past,
The rain is over and gone;
The flowers appear on the earth;
The time of the singing of birds is come,
And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

and a 1-0 start!
Tuning in on the Tigers' radio network. Too bad they didn't just replace Jim Price with a recording of nails on a chalkboard. Would be less annoying and probably equally insightful. Go Tigers.
PS I agree with you and wish Jim Petry was handed the job next to Dickerson.
So, you're not comforted by the dulcet tones of a man sucking on a Werther's Original?
Makes summer so much better. Looking forward to watching this team throughout the year.
One inning in, the vaunted offensive juggernaut is living up to the hype. At this rate, they will score 2916 runs this season.
There goes Verlander's perfect game (Cabrera 1st inning error). But we still have a possible no-hitter . . .
I'm stuck at my desk so only watching via gamecast but....32 degrees in Minneapolis!?!? God help anyone who gets sawed off today.
Who's Jim Petry? Dan's evil twin?
From the subject line.
Tigers have 3 runs in two innings. One would think that this would be enough for Verlander (if we ignore the possible closer meltdown . . .)
"Pitch counts matter less to Verlander than just about any pitcher in baseball" so true...
So, what were the odds in Las Vegas that the first Tiger's stolen base would come from Peralta?
I thought this was going to be about John Beilein's rebuilding job (and the Crisler renovations). I totally forgot the MLB season has already started - crazy.
Verlander probably didn't need to come out after 5 innings. Can't remember the last time he was relieved in the 6th, especially after such a strong start.
Ohhhhh, baseball.
My first thought was "Mormons".
that delivery and voice. legend.
From this "geezer" who remembers so very well that old "Detroit Tiger Baseball!" theme song---I haven't heard those sweet notes in years! And, speaking of sweet notes, there'll never be a voice that can measure up to that of Ernie Harwell. Simply the best baseball voice EVER!
Too bad they used that cartoonish "Tiger in the English D" logo for that YouTube video; I much prefer the traditional logos I grew up with:
and this
Benoit gets out of the 8th. 4 to 2 tigers.
162-0. Mark it down.
Closer is a position made up by the save statistic. There might be a few games the Tigers wish they had a closer, but not significantly more than a real closer would blow.
