OT: Origin of your sign in name/how long have you been reading

Submitted by MichFan1997 on
I'll start here. My name is really simple. I'm a Michigan Fan, and I started watching in 1997. And before I'm called a bandwagoner for starting in 1997, I should note that I only turned 10 before that season. So I really had no interest in football until then. I should note, however, that I started from Game 1 that season. Anyways, I just combined them. I was supposed to be MichiganFan1997, but when i signed up for the board on 6-30-08, I never got the confirmation e-mail. So finally I shortened to MichFan1997 and tried again and was successful. Finally, I became a loyal reader during the coaching search, so I've been reading since December 2007.

The Other Brian

April 14th, 2009 at 5:07 PM ^

I think it's pretty obvious where my sign-in name came from...lol. I was hoping I would spot Brian on Saturday so I could introduce myself and just say "Hey, I'm the other Brian!" As for reading, I can't for the life of me remember how I came across the site, but one of the first posts I read was Brian's "New Math" post after the 05 Penn State game. Been hooked ever since.

I became obsessed with Mike Hart after his first game in his freshman season. And his number is 20. Started reading off and on during last year's offseason (after Signing Day). Been religiously reading since the season began, finally signed up right before the Purdue game.

From ayso soccer. The numbers show up a lot in my life, po boxes and ID numbers, stuff like that. I really started heavy reading during the coaching search, but I had been here every now and again before that.

Mine is just a play on my last name. I was born in Ann Arbor so I've always been a Michigan fan, but I started reading right around the time Lloyd Carr retired and couldn't stop. Before MgoBlog I would peruse other forums and such to get my Michigan info. But I've always enjoyed Brian's work.

house of pain

April 14th, 2009 at 5:24 PM ^

Good post. I'm from Scranton PA, and it is psu and notre dame country here, and i have a serious hatred for both. I started loving UM also when it was 97, and for some reason i get every single UM game on tv. My name is just random, and completely forgot that there is a band called house of pain. And i started reading right after the 2007 season.

West Texas Blue

April 14th, 2009 at 5:23 PM ^

I live in West Texas (Midland), so hence that part in my name. An alumni mag I got a month after graduating in '05 had an article on MZone, so I thought I'd check it out. Got addicted to that website; there were a few articles which linked to Brian's website. Came here to MGoBlog eventually, and have been a loyal reader for nearly 4 years now.

turbo cool

April 14th, 2009 at 5:37 PM ^

i generally picture people who cruise the internet regularly to closely resemble the world of warcraft character from south park. so, i was thinking it'd kinda be like looking in the mirror while coming on mgoblog for half of you guys. oh, and i feel really, really cool when i find myself visiting mgoblog 5-10 times a day. anyways, growing up in a2 and then going mich = the love for mich is self-explanatory.

April 14th, 2009 at 5:30 PM ^

My handle came from the fact that I live in the UP for 5 years while I went to school there. While there, I fell in love with the land and Lake Superior. I would be living up there if work and family allowed it. The number 63 came from my college football number I had while I was at school. I started reading the blog somewhere around the recruiting class of '07. I think it was a ROJO link that brought me here from The Victors board where I had been lurking for some time. Someone posted something like "check out Funky's (Funkymoses is Brian's handle on The Victors board, for those that don't know) update about ROJO on his blog". So I went and have been hooked ever since.

victors2000

April 14th, 2009 at 5:32 PM ^

which I couldn't believe was available, I thought that was pretty cool. I graduated in '99 and to commemorate the new millenium/world is my oyster/future is so bright kinda attitude choose victors2000 as my e-mail name. The rest is history. I don't know how long I've been reading Brian's blog, it's been several years for sure.

mvp

April 14th, 2009 at 5:50 PM ^

My initials are MVP so I use them a lot. It is pretty easy for people to remember... I found the blog in the middle of the 2006 season and have been reading religiously since. UFR had me at hello. I used to post a ton on umgoblue.com but got tired of the same discussions again and again. I found mgoblog to be a much better source of info than having to root around the messages on other sites.

mvp

April 15th, 2009 at 1:17 AM ^

Nope, no wrestler blood in me. Named after my two grandfathers, Michael and Victor. The fact that the MVP thing worked out is something my father is quite proud of. In contrast to dankbro, my last name is *not* uncommon enough to put in a message thread, but I suspect it would be pretty easy to find. My email is mvpgoblue (at) gmail.com -- Google doesn't allow three character account names. On most sites, the "mvp" handle gets snapped up pretty quickly, so I felt lucky to get it here.

allHAILthedeat…

April 14th, 2009 at 5:58 PM ^

Well, I've been an avid reader since about 2006, but I've never been inclined to get an account until recently. That being said, I've been a Michigan fan all of my life (well, what I can remember of it at least) and I will be a alumnus of this great university in may. I was going to be just "allHAILthedeathbacker", but i never got that confirmation email either... Also, let's be honest for one second, deathbacker is perhaps the most badass position name ever. And Woodley is a beast. Hence, this video below:

AMazinBlue

April 14th, 2009 at 6:04 PM ^

It all started when I was but a wee tike, and my dad took me to a few games in 1969. I was five at the time and I remember some of the old-timers who I assumed had been coming to games since before electricity. I remember hearing the phrase "Maize and Blue", but being overwhelmed by the size and the din in the air all I kept hearing was "Amaze in Blue". I came across the site around recruiting season in '08. I read for awhile and realized there was a whole other world of M fans as obsessed as I am about this program. One of my favorite moments was last season at the Utah game when I arrived at my seats (Season tickets I have had for four years now, next to my brother's seats which he had passed down from my dad four years ago) and while waiting for the band to start a gentleman slides into his seat two rows in front of me. The curious, humorous and mostly ironic thing was the maize t-shirt he was wearing. It had something about his son's undergrad degree from UM costing $$$ and his Engineering degree from UM costing $$$$ and at the very bottom of the shirt squeezed in was the line about 'my son chucking the education to start MGOBLOG...PRICELESS!' I thought I was going to die. Hilarious! I didn't get a chance to talk to him, but at that point I became daily reader and occasional poster here.

Six Zero

April 14th, 2009 at 6:05 PM ^

I've been a hockey player for a long, long time... and there was a time in the 90's when I got on a team that already had a player wearing my usual number, #6. So I ended up wearing 60 and it stuck-- today both numbers are very special to me. Lots of people ask me how I became a UM fan living, like House of Pain, in the heart of Nittany Lion country with a fair amount of Catholic football fans peppered here and there. It basically comes down to one afternoon of watching Jim Harbaugh rolling out in a winged helmet. I was a kid, of course, and it was right around the same time that I decided I needed a college football team, and that's pretty much all it took. It just seemed... right. As for MgoBlog... For years upon years I used to religiously visit Mlive and TheWolverine, week after week to read press conferences along with the official press releases. But then the info started leaking about Lloyd's coming resignation, and I just couldn't find enough information online about my team. I ended up finding this place, and I became hooked pretty quickly... although for months and months I never felt compelled to join into the community and voice my opinions. Up until the week before the first game... and the rest, they say, is history.

lil_wolverine

April 14th, 2009 at 6:08 PM ^

I got lil_wolverine because I was listening to lil wayne at the time that I created my account. I have been reading this blog for about 3 years and finally decided to join a few weeks ago. I have Brandon Smith as my pic because I'm confident that by the time he graduates, he will be an impact player for the defence. Plus he looks good in the uniform. no homo.

4godkingandwol…

April 14th, 2009 at 6:08 PM ^

... I'm 4godkingandwolverines. Not sure why, but I've always liked that triumvirate and had really been into 20th century warfare history (also explains my FDR signature) at the time. In retrospect the name is way too long, and if I ever clear my cookies I have a terrible time remembering it, but it's who I am. Became a big reader about 6 months before I signed up (so a little over a year now). I originally found the site when drudging the internet to get free recruiting updates. I just happened across the site from a google search. That was a good day.

Yinka Double Dare

April 14th, 2009 at 6:12 PM ^

My name is my Deadspin handle, which is a rather obvious play on legendary NBA bust Yinka Dare and childhood game show Double Dare. Been reading this site since sometime during the 2006 football season.

I found MGoBlog back in the Blogspot days (if I recall, someone sent me the link to his Season Preview for the 2005 season before that year's ND game). I think one of my higher web honors has been having something I did linked to on this blog. I interviewed Brian for the Michigan Review a few years back, and he was kind enough to mention it. As for being a fan, I had never set foot in the state of Michigan until the day before I had my first class. I transferred from Pepperdine at mid-year, and joined the Michigan faithful just in time to have the last-second Texas field goal in the Rose Bowl stabbed into my stomach. I'm now so far down the rabbit hole that I freak out family and friends. This blog (and Johnny at RBUAS and Joey at Straight Bangin') has been instrumental in making me care more about the Wolverines than any team or player I've ever followed.

beast

April 14th, 2009 at 6:14 PM ^

Idk why i chose the name. I think because the other ones i wanted were unavailable and that just popped in my head. I've been a fan all my life because me older brother liked Michigan despite the rest of my family being big O$U fans. (my uncle is a season ticket holder and has been to O$U's last 5 bowl games) I became a regular reader around the time of the coaching search and became addicted.

WolverSwede

April 14th, 2009 at 6:17 PM ^

Born there, but didn't stay long. Swede is a mild assonance of "-ine". I got one of my friends to join as WolverIndian which is cooler IMO. He doesn't post though. I've been reading for about 2 years now. I couldn't tell you exactly. Probably the summer before the 2007 season.

WestWolverine

April 14th, 2009 at 6:21 PM ^

I've been coming to MGoBlog for several years but I really can't remember how I ended up here. I honestly think I wanted to go to mgoblue.com but somehow screwed it up and ended up here. Born in Michigan to an all Wolverine family. So I was born a Wolverine, I played as a Wolverine and I will die a Wolverine.

i've been reading mgoblog more or less since Brian started. i found it via the MVN michigan blog that was running (but sucked), iirc.

April 14th, 2009 at 6:32 PM ^

I discovered MGoBlog at some point my first year of law school. It was during the season of infinite pain and having Brian explain our shittiness to me made it a little easier to stomache it all. It has been my homepage ever since. My handle is just the same as my uniqname when I was a student at Michigan.

dankbrogoblue

April 14th, 2009 at 8:05 PM ^

dankbro is my umich account... which is a story in and of itself: I originally tried to get dankbrown (which Dan K. Brown is my name, common enough that I don't care if it's on the internets) and they only allowed 7 characters, so I took the truncated version, which, unbeknownst to me, would become a running joke with everyone that knew it (i smokey the reefa now n' then). My RA freshman year never called me Dan, just dankbro. So, when it came time to make an account I thought I'd use that. I added the "go blue" because that's a common cheer for the Michigan Wolverines. I got the D Warren pic because he's the top player of my class, 2011 (Manny Harris makes me proud too), and I think he's going to be ridiculous his junior and senior year. The first time I came across MGoBlog was in '06 when the (at that point) perfect season had renewed my obsession with Michigan football in full force. I read Brian's preview for the Ohio State game and was absolutely dazzled by how it captured my emotions for the game, and how it was so much more genuine than the ESPN articles I'd been reading. I started reading religiously though, during the coaching search

Magnus

April 14th, 2009 at 6:42 PM ^

My friends were joking around about being in the Russian mob, and since I'm big and burly, they said I should be a bodyguard. We decided that Magnus would be a good name, even though it's not Russian. I've been reading since the spring of 2006.

April 14th, 2009 at 6:43 PM ^

I think that I stumbled upon the Mgoblogosphere after stumbling upon the Mzone (after it gained fame from the wonderlic/ESPN fallout). medals is a spin-off from my name.

I think I started reading around the time of the ROJO drama. However, my most vivid, early MGoBlog memory is the App State kittens; so it was somewhere in that time frame.

My pic is that of a engine deck lid emblem of a 65 corvair vert that I am restoring. Why did I call it a engine deck lid? because the hood is in the front... (as is the trunk) I started reading in Dec 04 IIRC. The voracity hadn't been unverified yet, "Where Tom Harmon still kicks ass" was the banner tag line, and he and Breaston graced the top of every page. memmmmmorrrrrieeeeesss.....

Subrosa

April 14th, 2009 at 6:58 PM ^

Used to be the name of my band (there are like 7,500 bands named some variation of Subrosa, so it's probably not the one you're thinking of), then about 5 years ago the band changed its name, but Subrosa just stuck as my all-purpose internet handle. I started reading the site during the coaching search. It was immensely helpful in both assuaging and stoking my massive anxiety over the situation. Started posting a while after that.

mgoblue911

April 14th, 2009 at 7:43 PM ^

I like putting my allegience right out there, and it usually inspires some type of response, one way or the other. When I was 6 years old, growing up in Detroit, I was telling people that I was going to go to the University of Michigan. Applied as a junior in high school, never applied anywhere else. Got accepted. Got my student tickets. Watched AC in person for the first time. Ahhhh... Birthdays have been interesting since my 38th in 2001... Hooked on the blog right after The Horror (misery needed company)... obsessed since the coaching search. Still fondly remember The Knowledge's posts...
