OT: Maize Winter Coat?

Submitted by 608Monroe on October 4th, 2022 at 10:21 AM

I feel like this topic is brought up annually (as soon as the weather changes), but Columbia needs to step up and produce a Maize-colored coat for us Michigan faithful already -- especially as it relates to Maize-outs in November.  It's just unreasonable to expect people in maize tshirts or quarter zips when its 25 degrees out.

A quick google search for alternatives produces this:

Sunice makes a nice jacket, but this one strikes me as Adidas'esque in terms of color?

So, the question remains -- what are you fine people wearing for maize-outs in cold weather?

It seems like that color combination would be the best fit for a new conference member - yes, UCLA.  I wouldn't be surprised to see both UCLA fans wearing this fine article of clothing at a freezing cold October evening game when the temperature might fall into the mid 60's.

1) I have a Columbia Interchange coat (zip in/out fleece liner) from 1997 which I still wear to WET winter games.

B) It's not winter yet... a Maize hoody with appropriate / multiple base layers should work in October

iii) For the November game last year against the louts from the south, I wore a thermal T, a quarterzip and a maize fleece hoody on the outside.  Never a moment of discomfort.

Think outside of the coat.

Michigan doesn't have Maize-Outs in November....I'm guessing for this very reason.

I'm not claiming it's official AD policy, but I can't think of a late-season football game where a Maize-Out was declared.  They're almost always in September and October.  I'm assuming the reason for this is that most fans aren't willing to invest in a Maize winter jacket.

If there's a big game late in the season, they usually pass out the Maize pom-poms to the fans to try and create a Maize-Out effect, but just look at the OSU game last season, the overriding color in the stands is navy blue.  Hell, I was there wearing a black rain shell over the top of my navy blue Michigan fleece jacket because I was anticipating snowfall and wanted the waterproof layer to keep me dry.

This year's Maize-Out is the Penn State game.

I don't remember there being any maize outs as late as November. For Mid-October, unless we are getting significant rain, I'm just going to be layered with either a maize pullover or hoodie on the top. Keeps plenty warm even in a night game environment.

I've got three options: a nylon waterproof anorak, that I can wear as a light jacket or layer over something warmer, and in rain, a shawl collar merino sweater in dry fall weather and a down filled ski jacket with a recco detector so I can be found storming the field after a vs tOSU victory in a blizzard (came in handy after the Snow Bowl)  Bought them all a decade or more ago so none are still available. But, in the last category, I know that Descente makes ski jackets in the appropriate color; I'm sure other skiwear mfgs do also.

Since our maize outs are all at noon this year, and none in November that we know of, a nice yellow sweatshirt should be enough.  And a yellow sweatshirt is actually something you could wear on other occasions.  You don't have to buy a shocking yellow coat that you will hide in the closet for a year.

If it rains, a yellow rain poncho is cheap and easy to get.  It won't matter what you wear under it.

I don't love noon games, but that is one advantage of them.  You don't have to dress for temps in the 30s and low 40s.
