OT: Lions Sign WR Golden Tate
@ttwentyman: Golden Tate just agreed to a 5-year deal with the #Lions. Edit: 5 year, 31 million, per Josina Anderson.
and rob sims played for OSU, reiff is from iowa, suh/raiola are from nebraska. staffords from georiga, ziggy from BYU, CJ from georgia tech, bell played at wayne state, bush from USC, tate played for ND
whats your fucking point?
There is a difference between disliking a team or school and disliking the individual players who played for that school.
I dislike Notre Dame and I am totally indifferent to Golden Tate.
I dislike Tim Tebow but I am indifferent toward Florida.
He can get up and challenge for balls.
you can't leave the door that wide open...this is begging for a smart-ass response.
I am in total agreement. Dude is like Wayne Gretzky with the assist.
Another large target would be ideal, but I think they need a guy that can play in the slot and stretch the field
My worry is Stafford routinely overthrows guys like Pettigrew, Nate, Durham etc - excl Nate those guys are 6'5 6'6. I like Tate but he is 5'10. I am expecting to grind my teeth on a lot of overthrown balls his way this year.
The Lions have plenty of size. What they need is a WR who do something adter the catch.
Evans has bust written all over him. He looks like Mike Williams to me.
Height is about the only thing Evans and fat Williams have in common. Mike Williams was not passionate about football was slow as can be and played on a team loaded with a lot better talent than Evans ever had. Evansmight be a bust or a star or I don't know but he is no mike Williams. I want Evans personally if Watkins or Mack isn't there. Lions might just take beat available player they need everything except QB.
Nice. Very good #2 guy. Solid posession receiver who can stretch the field vertically also.
Would be an even better #3 option if they get Watkins or Evans. Just saying. I'd like to see Tate in the slot and get another big outside guy.
So an uproven draft pick should project to a #2 versus a proven guy in the NFL who was the #1 for Seattle? This is why the draft is so popular (as is recruiting).
Something about a bird in the hand...
watkins/evans have better size and would be a more prototypical #2 reciever, tate a more typical slot reciever as he is a shiftier and smaller player.
The Lions have the best receiver in the game. That means plenty of one-on-one coverage. The Lions need a guy who can do something after the catch. Also, it is an excellent chance that Watkins will not be there. Evans is a big WR who is too much like what they already have--except he doesn't have the speed or ability to separate like Calvin. Evans in overrated in my opinion.
That he's just won the SB and now is paid. Often, especially with receivers, that seems a recipe for under-performing the contract
NOT SO FAST MY FRIENDS. Conflicting reports about Tate. Only the Lions would send a reporter who works directly for them incorrect information.
Based on text I just got, sounds like Golden Tate is still learning of this Lions deal. "I have not accepted or even heard the terms yet."
In contract talk this means "it's a done deal, but since it's not officially on paper and the finer details of the contract are being hammered out, I'm not at liberty to say anything has really happened yet."
I kinda wanted to get Sammy in draft, but I'm absolutely fine with this pick up instead.
Look at Pro Football Focus article on Golden Tate:
https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/02/07/free-agent-duels-bennett-vs-tate/
....also from Anderson, has the money mentioned in it:
Golden Tate to me just now: "Yes I am taking the deal (with the Lions). It is a 5-year deal for $31M and $13.25M guaranteed."
— Josina Anderson (@JosinaAnderson) March 12, 2014
alot of scratch for a #2 or possibly #3 receiver...especially the guaranteed part. Not sure I like the length of the deal either.
but he can line up anywhere which is a plus. Guaranteed money is tiny which is good for the Lions. Thought it'd be more. Overall, the contract is pretty good IMO
its about what burleson was making ~6mill a year
Can't think of Golden Tate without taking into account his most golden of moments:
That crowd surf attempt has my vote for "least likely to succeed."
I really like this move. He's a young, solid WR who can play in space and (hopefully) help out Johnson. Last year's WRs, especially without Burleson, were terrible at getting separation.
As a Seahawks fan I will say that you guys will both love and hate this guy. He will be very productive and make many key plays. He's versatile enough to play outside (obviously you don't need him with Calvin) and inside. He's especially good when a play breaks down. He's also a great punt returner, I can't recall him making a bad mistake on a punt all year. He may also break into a donut shop or single-handedly piss off an entire opposing team. Dude's pure entertainment. I think it was a good signing by the Lions.
Luckily, we're equal to that in Detroit.
as well as Lions fan, I guess this was the possible best outcome. He is going to nuts in the Lions offense.
Signing a jerk from Notre Dame....just another reason I won't watch the Lions.
According to PFF, his 3.9% drop rate was the lowest in the NFL since 2011 (min 100 targets). That's EXACTLY who the Lions (and Stafford) need.
No it's not. There's no DB out there worth the price they command (ie Revis). You can get decent guys in the draft and pay them scraps with the rookie payscales. Look no further than the production the Seahawks got out of Sherman, Thomas and Chancellor.
Also, a solid #2 is definitely a need. Burelson is gone, Durham is meh and who know what will happen with Broyles' legs. Receiver is as much of a need as DB (where really you only need a FS -- Quin, Houston, Slay, and Bentley are servicable).
Lions need WR just as much, if not more than secondary. This should give them more flexibility on draft day.
